Released on June 25, 2015, Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest is one-half of the Fire Emblem Fates series from Nintendo and longtime developer Intelligent Systems. Together with Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and the DLC finale Revelation, the Fire Emblem Fates games are a trilogy of titles that tell a connected narrative. Each game in the series borrows heavily from the series’ debut 3DS entry, Fire Emblem Awakening, which had been the franchise’s most successful game to date at the time of Fates‘ release. Despite both Conquest and Fates telling the same story, the games differ from one another in terms of tone, mission variety, and structure.
Critical and commercial reception to Conquest would prove to be strong. Interestingly, the game has a slightly higher review aggregate than Birthright, with critics noting that the game’s challenging difficulty and interesting mission objectives result in the game eking out a slight edge. In particular, Conquest would receive a lot of praise for its darker take on the main Fates narrative, as well as its more interesting cast and overall atmosphere (which borrows heavily from traditional medieval fantasy elements versus Birthright‘s Japan-inspired unit types and setting).
Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest Premise
Similar to its Birthright counterpart, Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest tells the tale of two nations locked in a bitter conflict. Nohr and Hoshido, having been at war for years, settle on a fragile peace by exchanging members of their royal family to grow up as adoptive children of the opposing nation. Players take on the role of one of these children, Corrin, with the other being Corrin’s ally Azura. Conquest sees players grow up as a members of the Nohrian royalty despite originally hailing from Hoshido, attempting to change Nohr from within by making it a kinder and more empathetic nation. The hero eventually learns that the king, Garon, is an imposter, prompting them to hatch a plan to reveal the false king and restore the true ruler.
In terms of its gameplay, Fire Emblem Fates continues many of the trademark elements of Fire Emblem Awakening. The game is a tactical turn-based RPG in which players control a squad of heroes in various missions dotting a world map. As players complete missions and level up their heroes, they can promote their classes to grow their strength, eventually recruiting and even siring new soldiers for their armies by building and establishing relationships with allies. Battles take place on a grid with players controlling squads of heroes against enemy forces, using terrain and other elements to their advantage. When characters face off against one another, the camera zooms in to show a one-on-one battle.
Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest Main Characters
The story of Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest sees players growing up as a members of the Nohrian royal family following their kidnapping at a young age. The nations of Nohr and Hoshido have been locked in a seemingly neverending conflict for decades, prompting the leaders of each nation to agree to an exchange of heirs to attempt a fragile peace. In Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright, players grow up on the side of Hoshido and must choose between their adoptive Hoshidan family or their natural Nohrian heritage. Similarly, Conquest positions the game’s hero, Corrin, as a member of the Nohrian royal family who must choose to return to Hoshido or stay in Nohr. Main characters in Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest include:
- Corrin: The main character and protagonist of Fire Emblem Fates. Corrin is either a Hoshidan or Nohrian noble who grows up assuming they are a member of the opposing family. Fates centers around Corrin needing to choose between their adoptive or natural families.
- Azura: Corrin’s counterpart who grows up in either Hoshido or Nohr depending on whether you play Birthright or Conquest. Regardless of Corrin’s choice to side with their natural or adoptive family, Azura joins as an ally.
- Garon: Garon is the king of Nohr and, presumably, the antagonist of the Fire Emblem Fates games. In the plot of Conquest, it is revealed that Garon has been replaced by an evil imposter, prompting the hero’s plan to have the real Garon ally with Hoshido against the false king of Nohr.
Games in the Fire Emblem Series
Nintendo’s Fire Emblem is one of the most beloved TRPG series, with the first entry (Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light) debuting on the Famicom. The series would begin making its way to the West in the early 2000s with limited success, prompting selective releases in North America. The Fire Emblem team would develop and release the series’ debut entry on the 3DS, Fire Emblem: Awakening, and localize it for the West as a last shot to see if the series caught on. Awakening was the series’ greatest success to date, and the franchise has only continued to grow in popularity in the West. Games in the Fire Emblem series include:

Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest Cheat FAQs
Is Conquest the hardest Fire Emblem game?
Difficulty is traditionally subjective, but some games tend to stand out as being more challenging than others. This is the case with Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest, which has a reputation for being especially brutal. While it’s not the hardest Fire Emblem game, it is the hardest of the three games in the Fire Emblem Fates series. Conquest‘s difficulty comes from its linear story and challenging maps early on in the campaign that put players to task with limited units and resources.
How many parts is Fire Emblem Fates?
The Fire Emblem Fates series on 3DS consists of three games. The main story is split between Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest and its counterpart, Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright. Completing both sides of the same main story unlocks the ability to play the final chapter in the saga, Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation.
What’s the difference between Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Conquest?
Several key differences separate Birthright and Conquest despite both games telling the same main story. While characters in Birthright will side with the Hoshido region, Conquest puts players in charge of the Nohrian forces. Additionally, Conquest features a slightly different structure than Birthright. Birthright is slightly more flexible in allowing players to grind out random battles and build up units. Comparatively, Conquest is more linear, and it also features more complex objectives during missions. Rather than tasking players with simply eliminating all enemies, many of Conquest‘s missions have unique objectives like breaking down defensive barriers or holding an objective for a certain number of turns.
How long to beat Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest?
Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest is similar in length to Birthright. To complete the main story without any deviation, players can expect to spend 25-30 hours. However, should players choose to build up their units and pursue several side objectives, a completionist playthrough of Conquest can take upwards of 75-80 hours. Completing the entire Fire Emblem Fates saga, including the final chapter Revelation, will take players 200+ hours.
