Game Releases This Week: May 26, 2025 to May 30, 2025
We were told that the constant deluge of video game releases would somewhat slow down following what was an unusually hectic 2023 and 2024, thanks to the industry normalizing after the COVID boom, but 2025 has proven that to be false. Instead, every month of the first half of the year has been packed with at least one high-profile release that players have been awaiting for months, if not years, and it's all capping off with one of the year's biggest game releases finally arriving this week: Elden Ring Nightreign. Since Nightreign's reveal at The Game Awards 2024, it's been steadily creeping up charts as one of the most wishlisted and anticipated titles of 2025. Accordingly, most other developers and publishers have given it a wide berth to avoid having their releases swallowed by its hype, but some other noteworthy games are launching this week.
I Am Your Beast
- Release Date — May 26, 2025
- Developer — Strange Scaffold
- Publisher — Strange Scaffold
- Genre — FPS
- Platforms — PlayStation 5
Strange Scaffold is a studio that plays by its own rules and seems to have a ton of fun while doing it, as evidenced by its knack for games with off-the-wall premises supported by rock-solid gameplay. After initially breaking out with 2023's El Paso, Elsewhere, the studio would follow it up with two titles in 2024, one of which is finally making its way to consoles this week after a year of PC exclusivity: I Am Your Beast. I Am Your Beast is like what you would get if you crossed the frantic, speedrunning FPS gameplay of a title like Neon White with the premise, art direction, and gameplay of classic FPS XIII, and it's every bit as addictive as you might imagine from that brief descriptor.
Roboquest
- Release Date — May 27, 2025
- Developer — RyseUp Studios
- Publisher — Starbreeze Studios
- Genre — FPS, Roguelike
- Platforms — PS4, PS5
Another formerly PC-exclusive game making its way to consoles this week is Roboquest. I recently wrote about Roboquest as being one of the best (if not the best) FPS action roguelikes, and its arrival on PS4 and PS5 this week sees developer RyseUp Studios make good on a promise for the title to receive a console port right as development on the title is shutting down. Roboquest scratches the itch that the best roguelikes do, delivering a fun, bite-sized gameplay loop with some incredible mechanics and worthwhile progression that make it hard to put down. Now, PlayStation owners get to see what all the fuss is about and why Roboquest is so highly regarded.
Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo
- Release Date — May 28, 2025
- Developer — Pocket Trap
- Publisher — PM Studios
- Genre — Adventure, Platforming
- Platforms — PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
Since Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo was first revealed in March of last year, it's been high up on Metroidvania and Zelda-like fans' radars as a title to watch thanks to its excellent retro-inspired visuals, precision combat and platforming, and offbeat sense of humor. The wait for Pipistrello comes to an end this Wednesday as the title arrives for both PC and modern consoles, and it will be interesting to see how the title stacks up against some other great Metroidvania games that have already been released in 2025. Still, there's only one "Yoyovania" on the block, and that alone gives Pipistrello an edge over the competition.
to a T
- Release Date — May 28, 2025
- Developer — uvula
- Publisher — Annapurna Interactive
- Genre — Adventure, Puzzle
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
When players learn that the creator of Katamari Damacy is making a new game, they take note. And for good reason, as the Katamari Damacy games remain some of the most inventive and unique titles of their time, thanks to their blending of a beautifully simplistic gameplay premise with plenty of charm, humor, and irreverence. Uvula's to a T is a game that practically screams its involvement from Katamari creator Masatoshi Ogita, as it's yet another adventure puzzle game with a unique movement premise. Instead of being a ball collecting all the objects in a level, though, you're now a hapless young boy who finds himself stuck in a "T" pose, reliant on the help of his dog to navigate the world around him.
Fuga: Melodies of Steel 3
- Release Date — May 29, 2025
- Developer — CyberConnect2
- Publisher — CyberConnect2
- Genre — TRPG
- Platforms — PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
The much-loved TRPG series Fuga is set to reach its conclusion this week with the release of the third and final game in the series, Fuga: Melodies of Steel 3. Like the previous two games in the franchise, Fuga 3 sees you piloting a giant tank, assigning the different characters you recruit to different roles in its operation based on their unique abilities and quirks. While the core gameplay of piloting the tank along a linear, predetermined path with battles and intermissions remains in Fuga 3, the game boasts a brand-new, revamped battle system as well as some new strategic intermission points that allow players to enhance the power of their tank, the Taranis.
Scar-Lead Salvation
- Release Date — May 29, 2025
- Developer — Compile Heart, Neilo
- Publisher — Idea Factory International
- Genre — Shooter, Roguelike
- Platforms — PC, PS4, PS5
Housemarque's Returnal is one of the all-time great third-person shooters and one of the best action roguelikes, so any game that uses it as an inspiration is worthy of players' attention. One such title is Scar-Lead Salvation, which looks like an anime take on Returnal and is set to arrive this Thursday for PC and PlayStation consoles. But what helps set Scar-Lead Salvation apart from being just an homage to Returnal is the title's pedigree, as developer Compile Heart is the new studio founded by the former head of legendary Japanese shooting game developer Compile, meaning Scar-Lead Salvation is likely going to have some incredible bullet-hell gameplay.
Sonic Wings Reunion
- Release Date — May 29, 2025
- Developer — Success
- Publisher — Hamster Corporation
- Genre — Scrolling Shooter
- Platforms — PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch
Speaking of shooting games and legendary Japanese developers, longtime shmup developer Success is bringing a remastered version of the classic Sonic Wings 2 to PC, PlayStation, and Switch this week. While we knew the Sonic Wings games in the West as Aero Fighters, the upcoming remaster sees the series use its original naming as it reimagines one of the best entries in the franchise, Sonic Wings 2, which just so happens to be one of the all-time great vertically-scrolling shmups. As you might expect from a remaster like this, Sonic Wings Reunion contains all kinds of bells and whistles like a practice mode, leaderboards, achievements, and more, all of which look to make it the definitive version of a genre classic.
Disney Illusion Island
- Release Date — May 30, 2025
- Developer — Dlala Studios
- Publisher — Disney Interactive
- Genre — Metroidvania
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S
Another former exclusive going multi-platform this week is Disney Illusion Island. Originally arriving on the Switch back in 2023, Illusion Island is now heading to PC and modern consoles and offers up a unique take on the Metroidvania. While most games in the Metroidvania subgenre mix combat and platforming, Illusion Island nixes any semblance of combat to let precision platforming and puzzle solving take center stage, and it's even better in co-op than it is in single-player. For a perfect family-friendly game to introduce younger players to Metroidvanias, you could hardly do better than Disney Illusion Island.
Elden Ring Nightreign
- Release Date — May 30, 2025
- Developer — FromSoftware
- Publisher — Bandai Namco Entertainment
- Genre — Action RPG, Roguelike, Extraction
- Platforms — PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
Arguably one of the most anticipated games of 2025, Elden Ring Nightreign finally releases this week. This roguelike take on FromSoftware's Elden Ring is a distinct departure for the developer, but it also somehow comes across as a perfect pivot for the franchise to make the most of the excellent world it's created. Rather than build a character from scratch, Nightreign sees players choose from a selection of pre-made builds ("Nightfarers"), taking them into a small section of The Lands Between and then working their way through a selection of classic FromSoftware boss encounters from Elden Ring and beyond.
Unyielder
- Release Date — May 30, 2025
- Developer — TrueWorld Studios
- Publisher — Shueisha Games
- Genre — FPS, Roguelike
- Platforms — PC
After taking a look at some of the best FPS roguelikes on Steam, I'm personally very excited for the upcoming launch of Unyielder. This slick-looking FPS roguelike features a unique visual style, some very anime-inspired character, enemy, and weapon designs, and what appears to be some intense gunplay and progression variety. While there's anticipation for the game to release this Friday, May 30, it's worth pointing out that Unyielder has yet to officially confirm that date, meaning it may slip into later in the year. Here's hoping that we can get our hands on this awesome-looking roguelike sooner rather than later.
