GRIN Founders Unhappy with Square

GRIN Founders Unhappy with Square

None

In 2009, GRIN Studios shut their doors with hardly an explanation. Most people blamed the poor reception and sales of Terminator: Salvation, Wanted: Weapons of Fate, and the Bionic Commando reboot. But according to former GRIN employees, everything was going swimmingly until Square Enix stepped in.

Apparently, sometime in 2009, GRIN accepted a contract to develop a new Final Fantasy title subtitled “Fortress.” GRIN wanted to totally re-imagine the franchise and was on track to deliver the game to Square Enix in increments as they reached certain milestones. However, Square Enix started acting funny, and asked for the game code to be faxed to them or sent to their legal department. Because GRIN was having a hard time complying with these strange requests, Square Enix never paid them for their work. When the money ran out, GRIN had to close their doors.

Of course, we don’t know how much truth there is to this story. It’s entirely possible that former GRIN employees are just venting their frustrations. However, one has to wonder why they waited two years to talk about it. And why bring it up right before E3?
