Japanese Cops Use Vita To Catch Cyber Criminals

Gekiroku: Keisatsu Micchaku 24ji! Is essentially a Japanese version of Cops! It prominently features Japan’s finest as they go about their daily activities, combating crime and protecting peace in their East island nation. However, the latest episode, which is set in the Fukuoka prefecture and centered on cyber crime, has a special surprise for the eagle-eyed gamer.

During a section in which the police are attempting to track down a man accused of identity fraud, who is said to have used several different IP addresses, the police attempt to find a Wi-Fi signal using a “machine to check the wireless LAN.” The device in question? A PlayStation Vita. Is it a ploy to spur sales for the struggling handheld?

Well, this isn’t the first time Sony gaming hardware has had applications in law enforcement or military settings. The US military, back during the early years of the PlayStation 3’s lifecycle, purchased units en masse, saddled them with Linux, and then linked them together to form inexpensive supercomputers.
