Konami Is Making a Killing on Mobile

Konami Is Making a Killing on Mobile

It’s still financial results season, and that means that we have a few more weeks of headlines and stories based on, or supported by, shareholders reports from the biggest companies in the industry. Today we’re taking a look at Konami, a company that I naively assumed would be going under soon. As it turns out, Konami did really well last year – it reported an increase in sales and profit – and it attributes its great success to (surprise, surprise) its mobile games.

Here are some numbers that mean some things. Konami reported sales of $2.2 billion which is a 14% increase over the previous year. More impressively, operating profit rose 61% to $226 million. The star of the report was Konami’s sports-themed mobile games, most notably Jikkyou Pawafuru Puroyakyu (say that three times fast, or even one time slowly), which surpassed 22 million downloads. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain got a shout-out for receiving high acclaim, but sales were kept a mystery because, we assume, Konami is till butthurt over the whole Kojima debacle. Expect more mobile games from Konami in the future. It just goes to show: if you’re ever broke and out of ideas, mobile games and pachinko machines will make you rich.
