Love Hina Sim Date RPG is a 2004 dating simulator developed and published by Anthony and Robert Hurrell. The duo created the game for browsers, basing it upon the Love Hina series of manga. Although it’s no longer available from the original source, you can still play this title on sites such as KBH Games.

Love Hina Sim Date RPG Premise

The game centers around the Hinata Inn, an all-women dormitory. The main character (and potential protagonist) Keitaro is the manager. This inn has a diverse group of girls with unique personalities and backstories, and you must build romantic relationships with them by talking to them and taking them on dates.

It isn’t all just girls, girls, girls, though. The game also features an element of time management, as you balance your character’s education with his dates. You’ve got to play your cards right, or risk losing your relationships entirely! Once you’ve developed your relationship with a character enough, you can also partake in mini-games and quests which enhance the bond between the two further.

There are multiple different endings to the game. The ending you achieve is based on your choices throughout the game. You’re looking for a successful romantic ending to the game, but not everyone will take the right route to it.

When you start Love Hina Sim Date RPG, you’re presented with a choice of main characters. If you’re a fan of the Love Hina manga, some of these faces might be familiar, and with good reason. These are the main characters that you can play as in the game:

• Keitaro: Keitaro is the main protagonist of the Love Hina series, and a student looking to get into Tokyo University. He describes himself as plain-looking, which makes his dating life tough.
• Kentaro: Kentaro is usually seen as Keitaro’s romantic rival in Love Hina. Usually seen as a playboy, Kentaro is an interesting choice for a protagonist in this game.
• Shirai: Shirai is Haitani’s best friend, an anime fanatic, and a computer geek. He is portrayed as someone who likes to chase after cute girls, making him a great choice for a dating simulator.
• Haitani: Haitania is extremely similar to his best friend, Shirai, in that he makes a hobby of chasing after girls.

While you can play as all of the above characters, there seems to be little difference to the gameplay in who you pick. You select your own stats at the beginning of the game, and no character seems to have a specific advantage over any other.

As a fan game, it was always unlikely that Love Hina Sim Date RPG was anything more than a one-off attempt. That eventually turned out to be the case, and Anthony and Robert Hurrell never returned to Love Hina for a second title. It’s unknown why exactly this happened, although it being an IP owned by someone else certainly muddies the waters.

Despite leaving Love Hina behind, the developers continued to make plenty of other dating simulators in the exact same style in the years following.

Instead, it opens up a slideshow that shows a bunch of the conversations that were too intense for the original game. They’re a lot of fun to look through, and some will surely get a few laughs.
