Metal Gear Solid Creator Believes Games Should Tackle Controversies

There’s a saying in the wrestling world: controversy creates cash. However, this might not be exclusive to the squared circle, as Metal Gear Solid ’s Hideo Kojima feels it’s a step gaming needs to embrace in the future.

While tackling social issues in gaming is something we’ve touched on extensively here at CheatCC in the past, Kojima also believes that it’s time for gaming to step outside the box of the usual space marine/racing simulator subject matter, and take on more pressing challenges facing the world today. “If we don’t cross that line, if we don’t make attempts to express what we really want to express, games will only be games. If we don’t try to go beyond that, we won’t be able to achieve what movies or novels have achieved. I didn’t want to stay away from these things that could be considered sensitive. If we don’t go that far, games will never be considered as culture.” He states.

While a bit of controversy has already been ginned up regarding Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes shorter story mode, Kojima reveals his unflinching portrayal of vengeance as a central theme in the game (one that he doesn’t intend to shy away from). “One of the main topics of Metal Gear Solid V is this chain of revenge…I really didn’t want to go around it. I know that I will probably face a lot of criticism because of it but I really wanted to portray that accurately.” Kojima says.

Pick up Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes on March 18 th , available on all Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
