The 2004 remake of the 1998 PS1 classic, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is a joint venture between Konami Computer Entertainment Japan and Silicon Knights. Having just come off its work on the excellent Eternal Darkness, Silicon Knights would end up joining the project thanks to Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata approaching the studio’s president Denis Dyack to work on the title. Joining Dyack and the rest of Silicon Knights was none other than series creator Hideo Kojima, who would end up serving as the remake’s producer along with his role in helping redesign certain gameplay elements.
While it would not reach the same level of critical and commercial success as the original Metal Gear Solid, Twin Snakes still holds an impressive 85% positive review aggregate score and consistently ranks as one of the best GameCube exclusive games ever made. It also happens to be the only remake in the Metal Gear Solid series prior to the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 3 remake currently in development. With an estimated 250,000 units in sales, Twin Snakes‘ commercial success falls far short of the original’s 8.3 million units.
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes Premise
Aside from a small handful of gameplay tweaks, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is a faithful remake of the original PlayStation version of Metal Gear Solid. What Twin Snakes adds, other than the improvements to its visuals and presentation that mirror Metal Gear Solid 2‘s graphics, are the first-person view mode being usable in combat and the new ledge-hanging ability. Like in Metal Gear Solid 2, Snake can jump over railings and hang from the edge to avoid being spotted. He has a new meter to watch during these segments (GRIP), which he can also level up to improve his endurance and allow longer time hanging from ledges.
Otherwise, The Twin Snakes is still the same Metal Gear Solid experience that fans remember. There are some tonal inconsistencies with how the game presents its narrative in comparison with the original, which has led to the game receiving a bit of a mixed reception from series fans. However, the return of the full original voice cast (minus the addition of a new voice actor for Grey Fox/Ninja) does add some legitimacy to the game’s place as the current definitive remake of Metal Gear Solid. Like in the original, players need to utilize stealth and subterfuge to avoid conflict in Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, with the title rewarding players who avoid detection and attempt mostly pacifist playthroughs.
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes Main Characters
As a remake of the PlayStation original, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is a mostly faithful 1:1 retelling of that game’s story. Accordingly, Twin Snakes reintroduces the original’s cast, complete with using almost all the same voice actors. Main characters in Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes include:
Heroes
- Solid Snake: The hero of the Metal Gear franchise, Solid Snake is a soldier without peer. As the genetic clone of the legendary Big Boss, Snake is one of the few people capable of handling the hostage situation on Shadow Moses Island.
- Col. Roy Campbell: Snake’s former unit leader, Colonel Roy Campbell is Snake’s handler and the man responsible for pulling him out of retirement for the mission at hand. He relays important mission data to Snake and is Meryl’s uncle.
- Naomi Hunter: Naomi is the chief of FOXHOUND’s medical staff and one of Snake’s supports on his mission to Shadow Moses Island. her expertise in gene therapy plays a major role in the game’s plot.
- Mei Ling: Another of Snake’s supports, Mei Ling is the technology expert and Snake’s lifeline. Accordingly, Snake calls her routinely to record his progress throughout the mission.
- Meryl Silverburgh: Roy Campbell’s niece and a new recruit to the Marine Corps who arrives on Shadow Moses Island as part of her first assignment.
- Hal “Otacon” Emmerich: The principal designer behind Metal Gear Rex, Otacon is a genius who turns against both the US government and the FOXHOUND terrorists to help Snake in his mission.
Villains
- Liquid Snake: The leader of the current incarnation of FOXHOUND, Liquid Snake is threatening the US with a nuclear strike if the remains of Big Boss are not delivered to Shadow Moses Island. He is Solid Snake’s genetic twin and another clone from the “Les Enfants Terrible” project.
- Revolver Ocelot: Liquid Snake’s right-hand man and a master marksman, Revolver Ocelot is one of the principal minds behind the plan to take Metal Gear and is one of the most important figures in the entire Metal Gear lore.
- Psycho Mantis: The telepathic Psycho Mantis is a member of FOXHOUND who can read people’s minds. He then uses that knowledge to subvert their will and control their actions.
- Sniper Wolf: Sniper Wolf is one of the world’s deadliest snipers and a member of FOXHOUND.
- Vulcan Raven: Another member of FOXHOUND, Vulcan Raven is an intimidating figure who relentlessly hunts Snake for the honor to kill the legendary soldier.
Games in the Metal Gear Series

Though the series would remain dormant for several years, Kojima would eventually return with the groundbreaking Metal Gear Solid in 1998. Kojima’s eventual falling out with Konami would result in the series lying mostly dormant following MGS V, but the Metal Gear Solid franchise’s mainline entries all still rank as some of the greatest games ever made. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes Secrets & Easter Eggs
Thanks to the title’s GameCube exclusivity, there are several Nintendo Easter Eggs and game references players can uncover in Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. Additionally, there are some secrets players can uncover during their playthrough by completing certain actions.
Eternal Darkness Cameo
After obtaining the Magazine item, throw one on the ground and enter first-person view. You will see Alex Roivas from Eternal Darkness on the cover.
GameCube and WaveBird Controller Cameo
After fighting the Ninja in Otacon’s lab, look at the monitor on the middle desk. A GameCube with a WaveBird next to it is on the display.
Mario and Yoshi Cameo
In Otacon’s lab, there are Mario and Yoshi figurines on top of a computer monitor. Zooming in on Mario’s head and shooting it causes the “1-Up” message to appear, restoring some of Snake’s health. This can come in handy during the battle against Ninja.
Developer Cameos
In Psycho Mantis’ boss room, there are portraits lining the back wall. Enter the first-person view and look at the portraits to spot Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes‘ developers. From left to right: cutscene director Ryuhei Kitamura, creator and producer Hideo Kojima, and Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack.
Cracked Camera
If Snake gets shot while in first-person view, the camera will crack after several hits.
Make Meryl Uncomfortable
Right before the fight with Psycho Mantis, enter first-person view and stare at Meryl to trigger some humorous dialogue.
Psycho Mantis Remarks
Like in the PS1 original, Psycho Mantis will read the player’s memory card during his boss fight. Having save files for Eternal Darkness, Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, or Super Smash Bros. Melee will trigger special dialogue during the fight.
Eternal Darkness Poster
In the room in the Armory where Snake locates the Nikita, look inside the locker to spot an Eternal Darkness poster.
Metal Gear: Ghost Babel Box Art
After the fight against Ninja, revisit Otacon’s lab and look at the shelf in the southeast corner. The box for Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (Metal Gear Solid on Game Boy Color) will be on the shelf.
Zone of the Enders 2 Poster
During the fight against Ninja in Otacon’s lab, players can enter first-person view and spot a poster for Zone of the Enders 2: The Second Runner on the back wall.
Frustrate Mei Ling
Calling Mei Ling three times in a row on the Codec without saving results in her getting angry at Snake. After, she will occasionally stick out her tongue when Snake calls.
Bonus Vulcan Raven Dialogue
Killing all the Ravens on the lift leading to the Vulcan Raven boss fight results in a special Codec call from Campbell and Naomi and an extra line of dialogue from Raven himself.
Silicon Knights Website
On the 2nd floor of the Tank Hanger is a room with a Level 2 door key lock. Inside, look at the computer monitor to see that it’s displaying the Silicon Knights website.
Secret Cardboard Box Enhancement
Equipping the Handkerchief is usually the only way to repel the wolves in the caves, but there’s another way to stop them from attacking. Equip Snake with any Cardboard Box and stop moving when one of the wolves approaches. Instead of attacking, the wolf will relieve itself on the box. After, the scent of the urine will repel other wolves just like the Handkerchief.
Using Cardboard Boxes
The Cardboard Boxes Snake acquires in the game are useful for more than just hiding from soldiers. Players can actually use them to fast-travel around Shadow Moses Island. Each of the boxes has a different label — Helipad, Nuke Building, and Snowfield. Heading into the back of one of the cargo trucks and equipping one of these boxes will transport Snake to that location.
Control Camera During Briefing
From the main menu, select the Briefing option to view a special cutscene. During the Briefing, press LT or RT to switch between 4 different camera views. While viewing from any of these angles, press the D-pad to move the camera around.
Easier Fight Against Ninja
Players can throw Chaff Grenades to disrupt Ninja’s electronics and stun him. Hitting Ninja while stunned by a Chaff Grenade will cause him to fall to his knees and remain there until the effect wears off.
Crossing Mine Field
Equipping the Mine Detector allows Snake to safely maneuver across the minefield, but there’s an alternate way to cross without taking damage. Simply have Snake go prone/crawl on the ground to cross the minefield. He will pick up any Claymores he comes into contact with along the way.
Extra Damage Against Ninja
Instead of punching Ninja using Snake’s bare hands, equip a weapon and press B to melee attack with the stock. Each weapon deals different amounts of damage, with the FAMAS being the best balance between speed and power.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes Cheat FAQs
How long to beat Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes?
Depending on players’ familiarity with the PS1 original, beating Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes can take anywhere between 8-10 hours. To see and do everything The Twin Snakes has to offer, players can expect to spend between 18-20 hours. That said, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes‘ complex ranking system makes it worth playing the game multiple times to achieve different outcomes and hone your skill.
How do you get the Meryl ending in MGS: The Twin Snakes?
Just like in the original Metal Gear Solid, players can save Meryl and get the “good” ending in Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. To save Meryl, do not submit to Ocelot’s torture. For saving Meryl and getting the “good” ending, players will also unlock the Bandana that grants infinite ammo in subsequent playthroughs.
How many pull-ups does it take to max out Snake’s grip in Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes?
Players can hang over the edge of any railing and do 100 pull-ups to level up Snake’s GRIP stat. The highest level of GRIP is GRIP LV. 3, meaning players will need to do a total of 300 pull-ups to max out the stat.
Where do you get the M9 in Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes?
The M9 tranquilizer pistol is a great weapon to have for non-lethal, pacifist playthroughs of Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. However, the weapon’s location makes it easy to overlook in the early game. There are two locations where players can find the M9, with the earliest being the more difficult to obtain. In the Cargo Dock, players can knock out the guard patrolling the northwest area to search three lockers. The M9 will be inside one of the lockers. Alternatively, players can get the M9 in the Armory right before the boss fights against Revolver Ocelot.
