Microsoft Sues Motorola

Microsoft Sues Motorola

None

The association between Microsoft and cell-phone powerhouse Motorola isn’t immediately apparent, but a lot of Microsoft’s inside tech for the Xbox 360 is on license from Motorola. Now the runaway success of the console has lead Motorola to boost their licensing fee, which Microsoft alleges is a breach of contract. The components that use Motorola tech are the internal wireless networking systems and the Xbox’s AVC MPEG-4 codec. These are both vital components and can’t be taken out of the system, so it looks like Microsoft will have to win the suit if they don’t want to pony up the cash (or discontinue the Xbox 360).
