New Lords of Fallen 2 Developer Starting from Scratch

Earlier this year, Lords of Fallen 2 moved from The Surge developer Deck 13 to Defiant Studios, a New York-based studio founded by former Avalanche Studios leads. While the previous team was in pre-production for a few years, Defiant Studios’ managing director David Grijns confirmed to Eurogamer that the project is starting over from the beginning.

Grijns said that the project is a “fresh start,” with a new engine (Unreal 4), and a new team that doesn’t have a ton of history with action-RPG games. “We actually see it as a strength,” said Grijns. As Defiant Studios is mostly made up of ex-Avalanche Studios people, the bulk of the experience in the house is with the Just Cause series.

Defiant Studios has largely worked on cooperative multiplayer experiences, since starting in 2016. However, Lords of the Fallen 2 seems to have been seen as an opportunity to try something new and challenging.

Grijns pointed to FromSoftware and Dark Souls as the king of this space, and that the “untouchable” nature of said space is seen as a welcome challenge by the studio. The team is taking inspiration from Dark Souls and similar projects, like Nioh. It hopes to bring something cool to fans of the first Lords of the Fallen .
