New Sidequest Discovered In Final Fantasy IX

New Sidequest Discovered In Final Fantasy IX

With a reboot of Final Fantasy XIV coming later this year, and third game in the Final Fantasy XIII “series” in the works, what possible reason could we have to speak of Final Fantasy IX, the last of the main series released on the original PlayStation?

Thirteen years after its release, a new sidequest has been uncovered in the game. Though nothing grandiose—there’s no new major boss, special encounter, or extra dungeon to be explored—the quest is fairly broad, spanning the entirety of disc 4.

It involves repeatedly talking to specific NPCs, which can first be done at the beginning of the disc, and then returning to the same place after major boss battles or cutscenes to talk to those who subsequently appear until a prize is awarded. After this, the cycle of NPCs resets, though there aren’t enough triggers in the final disc to complete the cycle twice.

This isn’t the first time an unknown, or at least undocumented, secret has been discovered in a game long after its release. The original Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain had an entire pirate ship that one could explore, not discovered until fourteen years after the game came out.
