Nintendo Confirms and Details DSi XL

Nintendo Confirms and Details DSi XL

None

Today, Nintendo confirmed that the rumored, larger-screened DSi is in fact for real.

This morning it was announced that the DSi LL is set for Japanese release on November 21, 2009 – just before the holiday rush.  Japan will get three colors at launch: Wine Red, Dark Brown, and Natural White.

Later in the day, it was also confirmed that Europe and North America are on the list to receive the fourth incarnation of the Nintendo DS, but the system will be marketed as DSi XL and these regions won’t receive the hardware until Q1 2010.

The advantages of DSi XL over its predecessor is that it has total screen surface that’s 93% larger than the previous model.  Moreover, a larger stylus, longer battery life, better viewing angle, and pre-installed DSiWare round out the benefits.

Of course, the handheld is also significantly larger in terms chasis and is weightier, making it somewhat less portable.  If Japan can be used as a litmus test (the DSi LL will retail for 20,000 yen), expect the new platform to retail for $199.99 in The States.
