Nintendo Confirms SNES Classic Edition Production Details

Nintendo Confirms SNES Classic Edition Production Details

As the hype and excitement died down yesterday during the SNES Classic Edition announcement, the conversation drifted back into the bad mojo over the NES Classic Edition. How long is Nintendo planning to support the system? And by support, I mean how long will it be available for the actual retail price before scalpers ruin everything forever?

Nintendo has provided the answer. It isn’t a great answer, but this time the company seems to have learned from its mistakes and at least cleared up its messaging. The SNES Classic Edition is definitely a limited product. That said, Nintendo is releasing it earlier and in ostensibly higher initial quantities than its predecessor.

Per Kotaku, Nintendo passed on the following statement, “We aren’t providing specific numbers, but we will produce significantly more units of Super NES Classic Edition than we did of NES Classic Edition. Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition is currently planned to ship from Sept. 29 until the end of calendar year 2017. At this time, we have nothing to announce regarding any possible shipments beyond this year.”

So it’s still going to go away at the end of the year, and take with it the exclusive Star Fox 2. (Unless, of course, it shows up later on the Switch in some fashion). But Nintendo promises higher numbers up front, and of course are offering pre-orders this time. So hopefully less confusion, and less frustration among Nintendo fans. Maybe.
