Nintendo Switch May Have GameCube Virtual Console Support

Nintendo Switch May Have GameCube Virtual Console Support

Good news for prospective Nintendo Switch buyers: we’ve heard that the new system may feature Virtual Console support for the GameCube. This was a long-requested feature for the Wii and Wii U, and it looks like fans’ cries have finally been heard.

According to Eurogamer, three titles have already been confirmed for the service. These include Luigi’s Mansion , Super Mario Sunshine , and perhaps most importantly, Super Smash Bros. Melee. It will be interesting to see if the Switch receives its own Smash Bros. title, or if Nintendo will bank on Melee to carry interest in the series forward until they deign to release a new one. Producer Masahiro Sakurai once said that he would be moving away from the series in light of his calcific tendonitis making it hard to work, so this might be Nintendo’s way of placating competitive Smash players.

The GameCube version of Animal Crossing is also supposedly in testing for the Switch Virtual Console, as is support for the GameCube adapter peripheral. We’ll have more details as the Switch approaches its launch in March 2017.
