As brilliant as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild can be, sometimes it hangs up a bit. The frame rate will drop, especially in areas with lots of vegetation. Sometimes it experiences a hitch entirely for a second, albeit that happens rarely. Other games seem to have intermittent problems as well, such as resolution drops in Fast RMX and frame rate drops in I am Setsuna . One might figure that’s due to the Switch’s lower power compared to its console peers, but as it turns out, that may not be the case.
As per a report from Nintendo Life, some of these issues may be related to how the Switch currently looks for a Wi-Fi connection. The system has an auto-connect option, as is the case with most Wi-Fi enabled devices. When a device searches for a connection, that does cause it to draw additional power. So if, during a game, the Switch drops or doesn’t have access to the Internet, extra power is used while it haplessly looks for one, causing these problems.
To fix it, for now, find the auto-connect setting and turn it off. Alternatively, you can also put the Switch into Airplane Mode to remove Wi-Fi from the equation entirely. It is worth noting, however, that Airplane Mode is not available while the Switch is connected to the dock. Nintendo is apparently aware of the problem and will be addressing it in a future firmware update.
