NPD: Switch Outsold PS4 and Xbox One in August

The Nintendo Switch hype train continues to scream down the tracks, if last month’s NDP Group sales numbers are any indication. Nintendo’s hybrid handheld/TV console outsold both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in August 2017. This is the fourth month out of six since the platform launched that it held the top spot in hardware.

The PlayStation 4 did regain the top spot in the months of May and June, with June in particular being a big month for the system as the Crash Bandicoot collection sold like nobody dared to expect. The PlayStation 4 is also the best-selling console in terms of year-to-date numbers, although NDP doesn’t actually release the numbers so we don’t know the comparison point between the two consoles.

It’s also worth noting that hardware overall dropped six percent in August. The Xbox One and older platforms saw decreases this month, thus offsetting slightly the boost coming from the Switch according to the NPD. That said, again in year-to-date numbers, hardware has gone up 17 percent overall compared to last year. The NPD attributes that to both the Switch and huge interest in the NES Classic Edition.
