Obsidian Entertainment’s Pillars of Eternity is the company’s 2015 role-playing game in the vein of the CRPG genre’s all-time greats. Following a successful crowdfunding campaign via Kickstarter, the game would launch on March 26, 2015, with an expansion arriving shortly thereafter as one of the campaign’s stretch goals. Console versions of Pillars of Eternity would arrive 2 years later including all expansion content. Notably, Pillars of Eternity is a spiritual successor of sorts to Obsidian’s classic games Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale. Though it shares many similarities to the Dungeons & Dragons CRPGs, Pillars of Eternity utilizes its own rule set and universe.
Pillars of Eternity was met with considerable critical acclaim and commercial success. In addition to winning several awards for either Game or RPG of the year from different outlets, PoE holds an impressive critical review aggregate and would eventually go on to sell more than a million units. Following a direct sequel in the form of Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, Obsidian announced it was working on a new game set in the same fictional universe of the Pillars of Eternity games, with the upcoming Avowed set to launch in February 2025.
Pillars Of Eternity Premise
The story of Pillars of Eternity takes place in the world of Eora. A fictional realm in which medieval high fantasy is slowly giving way to technological advancement, Eora finds itself in the midst of a terrible curse. More and more children are arriving as Hollowborn, meaning they are born without a soul. This predicament is partly caused by the discovery of souls as real, tangible objects that can be harnessed and used to facilitate magic. A dangerous cult known as the Leaden Key is exploiting the souls of the unborn and harnessing them for a terrible purpose. When the player character unintentionally runs across the Leaden Key and bears witness to one of their rituals, they become a Watcher capable of reading souls, as well as an Awakened — able to access their soul’s past lives to both save Eora and put a stop to the Leaden Key.
In terms of its gameplay, Pillars of Eternity is a CRPG in the same vein as Baldur’s Gate and its sequels. Players will create a character and assign them a race, background, class, and starting stats/attributes before setting off on the game’s main quest. Along the way, there are 8 companions to recruit, though players do have the option to recruit some, all, or none of them. Combat and interactions with NPCs via conversations are all handled by a behind-the-scenes dice roll similar to the Dungeons & Dragons games, and Pillars of Eternity notably features its own custom set of RPG rules and metrics separate from the Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition rules that govern Baldur’s Gate and its sequels.
Pillars Of Eternity Main Characters
The world of Pillars of Eternity, Eora, is a fantasy realm that is currently in the grips of a philosophical crisis. Technological advancements in Eora reveal that the souls of living beings are tangible objects that can be harnessed and even transferred. With souls being the main force that powers magic, this discovery leads to their abuse, resulting in a horrible curse befalling the land in which children are being born without souls. The player takes on the role of a Watcher; individuals who have the ability to look into a person’s soul and read all the lives that soul has ever lived. As a Watcher, it is up to the player to return the natural order of life, death, and reincarnation to Eora. Main characters in Pillars of Eternity include:
- The Watcher: The player character and hero of Pillars of Eternity. After a mysterious storm destroys the player’s caravan, they seek shelter in a nearby cave where they witness a strange ritual that inadvertently grants them the power of a Watcher. While this gives them the ability to read the souls of individuals, it also threatens to drive them insane, causing the player to set out on a quest to both restore natural order to Eora and clear themselves of the curse of the Watcher.
- Thaos: The leader of the cult responsible for the ritual that harnesses souls and turns the player character into the Watcher. Thaos is stealing the souls of newborn children, resulting in their birth as Hollowborn.
Games in the Pillars of Eternity Series
Following a successful and high-profile Kickstarter campaign, Pillars of Eternity would end up being one of several newer games to reignite interest in the CRPG genre. In fact, Obsidian’s work on PoE, along with Larian Studios’ work on Divinity: Original Sin and its sequel, are partially responsible for the revival of the Baldur’s Gate franchise and its massive success. Obsidian Entertainment continues to explore the universe they created for Pillars of Eternity in both an official sequel and an upcoming spin-off. Games in the Pillars of Eternity series include:
- Pillars of Eternity (Linux, Mac, PC, 2015)
- Pillars of Eternity: The White March (Linux, Mac, PC, 2015)

Those hoping to have the easiest time possible with Pillars of Eternity should play Story Time. This mode allows players to simply focus on the excellent quest design and writing present in the game while getting the least demanding combat experience.

Players will have a total of 15 stat points they can allocate when creating a character. Notably, players can also decrease the starting level of stats down to 3. How long to beat Pillars of Eternity?
Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity is an incredibly deep, complex, and rewarding RPG. The game takes its main inspiration from BioWare’s Baldur’s Gate series. Additionally, Obsidian’s past work in the genre with Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale influenced PoE. As such, Pillars of Eternity can be a very long experience depending on how much time players want to invest. A standard playthrough in which players focus just on the main story will take roughly 35-40 hours. However, players tackling the main quest and side content can expect to spend 65-70 hours. A completionist playthrough where players unlock all achievements and see everything the game has to offer will take 100+ hours.
