Mark Cerny, the lead architect for the PlayStation 4, has revealed all sorts of details about the PlayStation 5 in an interview with Wired. He is returning as the architect for Sony’s next console and has confirmed that a lot of things people loved about the PS4 will be back. Most notably, the new system will feature PS4 backward compatibility and work with the PlayStation VR.
The PS5 backwards compatibility is a big deal. This is due to the construction of the system. Cerny noted it is based on the PS4 architecture, which makes the ability to go back and play the previous generation’s games on it possible. It is unknown if it will only be backward compatible with downloads or will also accept discs. The PS5 will still have a disc drive, so don’t worry about physical media going away.
There will still be a place for VR too. During the interview, the PSVR came up. While Cerny didn’t make many statements, he confirmed one welcome fact. The PSVR in its current form will still be viable. PS5 owners will be able to take the headset they own now and use it going forward. This is due to Sony seeing the importance of the peripheral and technology.
Other important details about the PS5 did surface. For example, the next console uses a solid state drive, which should help make it faster. An AMD’s Ryzen Zen 2 chip will be at the heart of the system. Ray tracing will be used to make games appear more realistic. It will even support an 8K resolution. Unfortunately, if we want to learn more, we’ll have to wait. The PS5 won’t be released in 2019, so we may not get more details until later this year.
