The Pokemon franchise is the highest-grossing media franchise in the world. It earned that status by releasing many great titles, merchandise, and animated films. The Pokemon games are broken into mainline entries as well as many spin-offs. One of the most popular is Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and its original title, Blue and Red Rescue Team. Releasing on November 17 2005 in Japan, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team arrived to moderately positive reviews. Many fans loved the original spin on the Pokemon formula, while others weren’t too fond of the new roguelike mechanics.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team Premise
Players are humans who magically are turned into one of sixteen Pokemon at the beginning of the game. This is determined by a personality quiz taken in the beginning and once you receive your Pokemon you can choose a partner. The actual gameplay of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team is mission-based. You and your partner take on many jobs that lead you to a randomized dungeon. Some players won’t love these roguelike aspects, but they are core to what makes these games tick.

Recruiting Deoxys
After recruiting Lugia you will gain access to the Meteor Cave dungeon. Put only three huge apples in your inventory. Choose one Pokemon to enter the dungeon; it must be level 100. Defeat one mirage Deoxys per floor to advance to the next. Get to floor 20 and defeat Deoxys when he is in front of you. Deoxys will join your Rescue Team and you will gain access to the enclosed island friend area.
Recruiting Mewtwo
Mewtwo is at Western Cavern on the 99th floor. You can unlock it by recruiting all the Legendary Pokemon before him including Ho-Oh, Entei, Raikou, Suicune, Zapdos, Articuno, Moltres, Kyogre, and Groudon. Western Cavern is a difficult dungeon, and you will be able to recruit almost all of the fully evolved forms of the nine starting Pokemon. To recruit Mewtwo you must defeat him with only one Pokemon in your team. When you get to floor 98, dismiss two of them and prepare for a battle. Mewtwo has about 900 HP.
Avoid dying
Save the game just before you go on a rescue. If you die, immediately turn off the power to your DS. Once you turn it back on, it will be as if it never happened. This is useful when going on long missions like Articuno, Groudon, and Rayquaza. It is very hard to complete the second part of some missions if you lose most of your items.
Team base
After you defeat the Mankey Gang in Uproar Forest, Jumpluff will give you one Peeled Chestnut. Give it to the Mankey Gang to pay for the construction of your team base. You only need two more Chestnuts from Uproar Forest. You usually cannot find them until Floors 7 or 8. Your Pokemon peels a Chestnut to make it a Peeled Chestnut. Once the construction is complete, your base will look like your Pokemon’s head.
Buried Relic
Always enter the Buried Relic dungeon with at least two Huge Apples or food items. Otherwise, when you get to about floor 50, you will faint from hunger.
Evolving
After defeating Rayquaza, you can go to a cave next to the Wishcash Pond. Your partner will ask if it can leave you and go to its Friend Area. Select “Yes” and you can enter the cave. Inside, a stone will ask if you want to evolve. You can evolve others by going to their Friend Area and selecting “Become Leader”.
Once you complete the game, a pit will appear in Wishcash Pond where evolution can be done, However, you must go alone. Try to go to a dungeon. When your partner asks if you want to make team leaders, say yes and become a leader. You can now go by yourself. Enter the pit and there will be a giant crystal that asks if you want to evolve. Say “Yes” and it will ask for an item. If you give one to it you will have a better chance to evolve. It will then ask again. If you give another item you will have an even better chance. When it thinks you are ready a big beam will appear and you will evolve.
Evolution Stones
Some Pokemon require the use of items to evolve, such as stones or ribbons. Here are the locations of those items:
- Beauty Scarf: Western Cave 59F (Key required)
- Deepseascale: Grand Sea 15F or Far-Off Sea (upper floors)
- Deepseatooth: Grand Sea 15F or Far-Off Sea (upper floors)
- Dragon Scale: Wyvern Hill 29F – 30F
- Fire Stone: Fiery Field 29F
- King’s Rock: Kecleon Shop in Wish Cave
- Leaf Stone: Kecleon Shop in Wish Cave
- Link Cable: Solar Cave 10F (Key required)
- Lunar Ribbon: Northwind Field 20F (Key required)
- Metal Coat: Southern Cave 49F – 50F

Glitches
Have Boss Pokemon Retain Their HP
First, you need a Reviver Seed. Also, this glitch works best if you have a Friend Bow and are at as high a level as you can manage (preferably 100). Also, this glitch will work better if you go into the dungeon alone, and the dungeon needs to be a dungeon with a recruitable boss Pokemon at the end. You don’t need to have any of these necessarily, but it boosts your recruitment rate.
During the boss battle, try to make the boss pick up a Reviver Seed. You can do this usually by just placing the Seed on the ground in front of the boss, and then walking away so the Seed is between you two.
The boss should just follow you, walk onto the Seed, and pick it up.
Next, you need to defeat the boss twice — once you beat it the first time, your Seed revives it and thus you need to defeat it a second time without a break.
If you manage to do this and recruit the boss Pokemon, a glitch will occur in which the boss Pokemon’s HP is not changed. For example: Zapdos will have 300 HP, Lugia will have 800, and Deoxys will have 950, when normally they might top out around 100-200 HP.
Repeatedly Sell Items
For this glitch, you must first have an item you wish to sell and then you need to find a Kecleon Shop in a dungeon. An item used frequently with this glitch is the Gold Ribbon, which sells for 2,000 Poke, but any items that sell for a lot are perfectly fine. The best dungeons to find Kecleon Shops are the following:
- Northern Range (7% chance per floor, 83.7% to find one overall if you explore each floor fully)
- Pitfall Valley (same as above)
- Wyvern Hill (8% for 4F onward, 89.5% per full trip)
Once you’ve found a shop, drop the items you wish to sell onto the carpet and quicksave your game. Reload your file, and speak to Kecleon. You’ll notice that you get twice the amount of money you’d normally sell them for. Continue talking to Kecleon, and you can repeatedly obtain the selling price for the items you dropped, thus giving you an unlimited supply of money.
