For a while now, Magic the Gathering: Arena has been operating a closed beta test that has been running since late 2017. A few months into 2018, the NDA was lifted, and the game’s content and updates have been much more public-facing. And, despite being a closed beta, signups for an invite code are still live, and codes are being handed out on a daily basis.
If you’re not familiar, Magic the Gathering: Arena is an attempt by Wizards of the Coast to create a full, digital Magic the Gathering experience. Players will be able to play for free, but of course there’s a freemium element that will allow players to cash in with real money to get packs faster. That said, the game is also designed so free players can still play the game and hang.
The game is designed to run on lower-end systems, and has been built on a flexible engine with a future console release in mind. Once the game launches fully, we could see ports to the PS4 and Xbox One follow soon after.
In the meantime, don’t forget to sign up for your chance to get into the beta. There have already been draft events, with many more happening through September 2018. And, if you make any in-game purchases now, you’ll be reimbursed in premium currency so you won’t have to dip back into your wallet when the game releases for real.
