Resident Evil: Director’s Cut Cheats & Secrets for PlayStation

Resident Evil: Director’s Cut Cheats & Secrets for PlayStation

Following the release and widespread acclaim of the original Resident Evil, Capcom would port the game to PC and begin development on a sequel. With development on Resident Evil 2 hitting several major stumbling blocks before settling on its final vision that players know today, Capcom decided to ease players’ wait by re-releasing Resident Evil with a new “remixed” version of the main quest. Arriving in September 1997 (roughly a year after the launch of the original), Resident Evil: Director’s Cut is the first re-release of the game and would go on to serve as the “definitive” release of Resident Evil on the PlayStation. The title contains the original version of the adventure from 1996’s Resident Evil as well as a new “Advanced” mode that operates similarly to the Master Quest of Legend of Zelda, changing item and enemy placements and making things generally more difficult.

Response to the Director’s Cut was largely positive, especially in later re-releases that would add-in analog control functionality to be compatible with the PlayStation DualShock controller. The game’s inclusion of a playable demo for Resident Evil 2 would help it sell well, with the Director’s Cut responsible for roughly 2.3 million units of the title’s total sales on PlayStation. Interestingly, the North American release of Director’s Cut was supposed to include the original, uncensored FMV cutscenes from the Japanese release of BioHazard, but it did not as a result of a miscommunication.

Resident Evil: Director’s Cut Premise

Resident Evil: Director's Cut gameplay

In the summer of 1998, strange murders begin occurring on the outskirts of a peaceful Colorado town, Raccoon City. The city’s law enforcement dispatched their elite unit, the Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.) to investigate, but things quickly went awry. The surviving members of S.T.A.R.S. Alpha and Bravo Teams find themselves trapped in a strange mansion that seems to be crawling with all manner of monsters but is actually the site of pharmaceutical research gone wrong. Surviving the horrors within the mansion and finding a way out is just the start of the battle, as the heroes in Resident Evil realize they have a traitor within their group who is orchestrating the whole scenario from behind the scenes.

The Director’s Cut of the classic survival horror adventure Resident Evil is largely the same as the original. In fact, players can still play the game’s original mode alongside the new Advanced Mode, which switches up item and enemy placements to give players a remixed version of the original experience. Aside from the new Advanced Mode and some changes to the presentation, the Director’s Cut is still the same Resident Evil fans know and love. Players control either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine as they make their way through the deadly Spencer Mansion, fighting off enemies using limited resources and solving devious puzzles whose solutions players can devise from clues and key items.

Notably, the original PlayStation launch of the Director’s Cut features a demo disc containing a small playable portion of the then-unreleased Resident Evil 2. This demo version is slightly different from the beginning moments of the game in the full retail release and is exclusive to the Director’s Cut version of Resident Evil.

Resident Evil: Director’s Cut Main Characters

In Resident Evil, players get to choose between dual protagonists Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. Both heroes are members of the Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.), an elite squad within the Racoon City Police Department made up of former military operatives and law enforcement experts. When bizarre murders begin occurring in the Arklay Mountains just on the outskirts of Raccoon City, S.T.A.R.S.’ Bravo Team is sent to investigate. The members of Bravo Team mysteriously go missing, cutting off all communication to the rest of the squad. Shortly after, Alpha Team is dispatched, with Chris and Jill (along with Barry Burton and S.T.A.R.S. commander Albert Wesker) arriving at the site of Bravo Team’s crashed helicopter. When mysterious monsters attack the team, the survivors escape into a nearby mansion to continue their investigation. Main characters in Resident Evil: Director’s Cut include:

S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team

  • Jill Valentine: One of the main protagonists and player characters. Jill is a veteran of the United States Army and an expert in reconnaissance who has worked closely with other S.T.A.R.S. members Chris Redfield and Barry Burton.
  • Chris Redfield: A veteran of the US Air Force, Chris Redfield is the other main protagonist and player character. A weapons expert and sharpshooter, Chris is a capable combatant, even with just a combat knife.
  • Barry Burton: After serving together with Chris in the Air Force, Barry joins S.T.A.R.S. and acts as a mentor to both him and Jill. He is one of the few S.T.A.R.S. members to find shelter in the Spencer Mansion.
  • Albert Wesker: S.T.A.R.S. commander and the head of Alpha Team, Albert Wesker is one of 4 members who seek refuge in the Spencer Mansion after Bravo Team goes missing and Alpha Team is attacked. He is secretly a double agent in service of the Umbrella Pharmaceutical Corporation.
  • Brad Vickers: Alpha Team’s helicopter pilot, Brad panics when the team is attacked and leaves the scene, choosing to fly around the mansion and wait for contact from any survivors.
  • Joseph Frost: Joseph is Alpha Team’s first casualty, killed when the S.T.A.R.S. members arrive at the site of Bravo Team’s helicopter crash.

S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team

  • Richard Aiken: Bravo Team’s communication expert, Jill finds Richard wounded on the mansion’s second floor. Despite trying to save him, he succumbs to his wounds, but not before giving Jill his radio.
  • Rebecca Chambers: The youngest member of S.T.A.R.S., Rebecca is the team’s medic. She runs into Chris inside the mansion and assists him in his escape plan.
  • Enrico Marini: Enrico is Bravo Team’s lead and a veteran law enforcement expert. He suspects the team is set up from within, and is killed for coming too close to the truth.
  • Forest Speyer: Forest is Bravo Team’s vehicle expert and a close friend of Jill’s. He meets an unceremonious end at the hand of T-Virus-infected crows.
  • Kenneth Sullivan: Kenneth is the first member of Bravo Team that the S.T.A.R.S. members come into contact with inside the Spencer Mansion. They witness him being eaten by a T-Virus-infected zombie.

Games in the Resident Evil Series

For nearly 30 years, Resident Evil has remained the preeminent survival horror franchise. In addition to coining the term and establishing many of the trademark elements players associate with the franchise, the Resident Evil series has grown from games into a multimedia empire consisting of comics, manga, live-action television and films, and more. Truthfully, the original Resident Evil and its breakthrough success are at least partly responsible for the resurgence of the popularity of media centered around zombies, and the original game is arguably one of the most important titles released on the original PlayStation. The appeal of Resident Evil seems to show no signs of slowing down either, with the most recent game (a remake of the iconic Resident Evil 4) topping sales charts and earning nods for Game of the Year. Games in the Resident Evil series include:

Resident Evil: Director’s Cut Cheats & Secrets

While there are no official cheat codes for RE: Director’s Cut, there are several secrets and unlockables. Additionally, there are plenty of Game Shark codes available for the title that make the experience of completing the game trivial. Notably, the Advanced mode in Director’s Cut completely changes the original enemy and item placements of the original game and is a significant challenge for players who have mastered the original Resident Evil.

Resident Evil: Director’s Cut Secrets & Unlockables

Double Items

On the game mode selection screen, highlight the Advanced option and hold Right on the D-Pad until the word turns green. Then, begin a game as either Chris or Jill. Each character will receive double the normal amount of items when picking up ammunition or Ink Ribbons.

Infinite Magnum Ammo in Advanced Mode

Players can utilize a glitch to receive infinite Magnum ammo in Advanced Mode. On the first floor of the Mansion is a room with a golden tiger statue. Placing the Red Jewel into one of the tiger’s eyes rewards players with 3 cylinders of Magnum ammo. Take only two of the three and then leave the room. When you re-enter, all 3 pick-ups will have respawned. Repeat this process as necessary to stock up on valuable Magnum ammo.

Unlockable Weapons

Beating Resident Evil: Director’s Cut while meeting certain conditions unlocks bonus weapons for use in subsequent playthroughs. In addition to being powerful, these bonus weapons also come with infinite ammo.

WeaponHow to Unlock
Infinite MagnumClear the game on Advanced Mode and save all characters to get the best ending
Infinite Rocket LauncherClear the game on any mode with either Chris or Jill in under 3 hours.

Alternate Costumes

As either Chris or Jill, beating the game and getting the best ending unlocks alternate costumes for each. After rescuing the necessary characters to get the best ending, players should see the message “You’ve got the special key” after the credits. Save the game and then start a new game using the Clear file. Enter the room with the large mirror on the first floor of the mansion in the entry hallway. Use the special key to unlock the door in the back. Interact with the rack of clothes to receive a message asking “There is an outfit that fits you perfectly, do you want to put it on?”. Selecting “Yes” will change either Chris or Jill into their alternate costumes. Note: In Advanced Mode, players will not receive the Special Key but the door will already be open, meaning the alternate costumes are still available.

Quick Reset

The Director’s Cut edition of Resident Evil allows players to quickly reset the game if they need to. Pause the game and press Start + Select to return to the title screen at any time.

Resident Evil: Director’s Cut Game Shark Codes

Just like every other PlayStation-era entry in the Resident Evil series, Director’s Cut has several Game Shark codes available. Playing the game natively on a PlayStation console requires having a Game Shark device to use any of the following codes. Alternatively, players using an emulator can input and activate any of the following cheats from the emulator’s “Cheat” menu.

Resident Evil: Director’s Cut Cheat FAQs

How do you get the Magnum with infinite ammo in Resident Evil: Director’s Cut?

Getting the Magnum with infinite ammo is one of the ultimate unlocks in Resident Evil: Director’s Cut. Accordingly, unlocking this bonus weapon is quite a challenge. Players need to complete the game in Advanced Mode, which switches up enemy and item placements and makes some encounters more challenging than they are in the standard mode. Additionally, players also need to save all their partners (Barry and Chris as Jill; Rebecca and Jill as Chris) while completing the game in Advanced Mode. After doing so and saving the complete file, players can load up a new game and have the Magnum waiting for them in the Item Box.

What is the password for the computer in the lab in Resident Evil: Director’s Cut?

Getting into the computer in the lab necessary to restore power and unlock doors is easier said than done. However, careful observation in some of the already open rooms gives clues as to the correct password. The login is the researcher’s name who players read the note from — John. His password to unlock one floor of doors is his girlfriend’s name mentioned in the letter — Ada. To unlock the other floor, players need to solve the blacklight puzzle in the lab, which reveals the final password to be Mole.

Can you get an infinite Rocket Launcher in Resident Evil: Director’s Cut?

Yes, it is possible to unlock the Rocket Launcher with infinite ammo in Resident Evil: Director’s Cut. To do so, players will need to beat the game on any mode (Standard or Advanced) with either Chris or Jill in under 3 hours. Saving the clear game file and loading it to start a new game rewards players with the infinite ammo Rocket Launcher in their Item Box.

How long to beat Resident Evil: Director’s Cut?

Most players will take roughly 5-8 hours to beat Resident Evil: Director’s Cut, with those times varying depending on player familiarity with the title. While it’s entirely possible to beat the game in under 3 hours to unlock bonus weapons with infinite ammo, this requires significant knowledge of the Spencer Mansion’s layout and puzzle solutions. Players can also take their time in the mansion, carefully exploring each room and collecting as many items as possible to aid with survival. To beat both Standard and Advanced Modes and unlock all bonuses, players can expect to spend 15 hours with the Director’s Cut.
