Scare Your Neighbors in Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Scare Your Neighbors in Animal Crossing: New Leaf

You’re a horrible mayor. You’ve been so distracted by games like Pokemon X/Y , Rune Factory 4 , and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies that your Animal Crossing: New Leaf town has been forgotten. You may think its the villagers who pay the price, what with flowers dying, weeds sprouting, and some jumping ship, but it’s really you who will suffer. Yes, you, because Halloween is coming, and I bet you haven’t even prepared.

See, Animal Crossing games take place in real time, which means that holidays have special celebrations. Animal Crossing: New Leaf is no exception. In fact, the Halloween preparations are more intensive here than in any past entry. The question is, have you been keeping up?

Earlier this month, you should have run into the pumpkin-masked Jack one day in town. (If you’ve been bothering to stop by, you horrible elected official you.) He would have asked if you’d be willing to join him in his mission to scare the townsfolk, and then given you your first Halloween mask. He also would have told you about the other special masks that would appear in the Able Sisters’ shop as well as enlightened you about the existence of the Nooklings’ Spooky furniture series.

Let’s start with the masks. These are super important because for the first time in Animal Crossing history, you’re going to be scaring your neighbors on Halloween. Based on my investigations (and purchases), you can don a mask or hood that makes you look like a mummy, ghost, stag beetle, skeleton, werewolf, or Frankenstein monster. Certain townsfolk will be hiding in their homes on Halloween, and, as an agent of Jack, you must wear the appropriate headgear to scare them into giving you lollipops. It’s home invasion at its best.

Lollipops are important because they’re the only way to get items from the Creepy furniture set. Jack doles out items in this series on Halloween in Animal Crossing: New Leaf . You have to take the candy to him, and you get one piece of furniture for each in return.

The problem is, the villagers who aren’t scared of Jack will be outside dressed as him on Halloween. They’ll chase after you the moment you enter their line of sight. If they catch you, you have to either give them a piece of candy or play a mini-game with them. Lose the mini-game, and you lose a piece of candy and get a penalty item. However, this can also be beneficial, as handing over a piece of candy will make them tell you what monster scares one of the hiding villagers. Since the mini-games in Animal Crossing: New Leaf are all up to luck rather than skill, it’s helpful to stock up on a few pieces of candy from the Nooklings’ store throughout Halloween.

Which brings us to the Nooklings, since they’re an important part of the Animal Crossing: New Leaf celebrations as well. Their store is the only place to get pieces from the Spooky furniture series. Throughout the month of October, a piece of furniture from the series will be sold in the shop every day, as well as either the wallpaper or carpeting. The only way to collect every piece is to stop in every day. Of course, this means you’ve probably missed most of the set by now. Don’t despair, as these items can be purchased from the Catalog, so you can turn to a friend who has been keeping up and ask him or her to purchase the items missing from your collection for you.

If you care anything about exclusive furniture, clothing, and items in Animal Crossing: New Leaf , you better get back to your town immediately. You still have time to make things right. Halloween is about a week away, and the festivities start at night in the game. Though, if you’ve been super neglectful and now have a town infested with weeds, you may want to, possibly, perhaps, share your friend code in the comments. You know, invite some helpful friends over to clean things up. (I’m sure we’d love to earn some of Lief’s special flower furniture in exchange for clearing out your town!)
