2024’s Silent Hill 2 is Konami and Bloober Team’s long-awaited remake of the 2001 survival horror classic. The title would originally begin development in 2021, with official confirmation of the game’s existence arriving in October 2022 after months of leaks. A collaboration between Konami and Polish developer Bloober Team, Silent Hill 2‘s development was highly publicized thanks to the mixed reception of Bloober Team’s previous games and the place the original has as one of the best survival horror titles of all time. In 2023, Bloober Team would reveal gameplay footage as part of a Sony State of Play event, with the game eventually releasing on October 8, 2024.
Apprehension toward the remake would prove to be unnecessary, as both critic and fan reception to Silent Hill 2 has been universally positive. Bloober Team’s enlistment of some of Silent Hill 2‘s original creative team helped the remake to retain the same atmosphere and story of the original while updating the visuals, combat, and other elements for a modern audience. In addition to its strong review aggregate of 87% positive scores, Silent Hill 2 holds an impressive 95% “Overwhelmingly Positive” user score on Steam. The Silent Hill 2 remake sold over a million units just three days after its release.
Silent Hill 2 Remake Premise
Like the original Silent Hill 2 is the tragic and upsetting tale of James Sunderland and his wife Mary. Mary’s affliction with a terminal illness would tear their marriage apart, leading to her final years being fought with suffering and anguish. In the wake of Mary’s passing, James finds himself burying his emotions in a bottle, incapable of facing the reality of his loss. Then one day, James receives a letter in the mail from his late wife that beckons him to the town where the couple vacationed, Silent Hill. Seeking answers as to who could have sent him the letter, James heads to Silent Hill unaware of the terrible truth that awaits him there.
The Silent Hill 2 remake makes some welcome improvements to the gameplay of the original. The most noticeable of these improvements is the game’s new camera perspective, which borrows heavily from the “over-the-shoulder” view of games like Resident Evil 4 and the modern Resident Evil remakes. Additionally, combat is completely revamped and much more satisfying than in the original, with James proving to be a more capable combatant and even having a dodge move that grants invulnerability frames. Like the original, combat involves a mix of both melee and ranged weapons, and James has a limited arsenal of tools at his disposal to both combat enemies and restore health.
Along with combat, the other cornerstones of the Silent Hill franchise are each game’s puzzles and riddles, which Silent Hill 2‘s remake delivers in spades. In addition to remixes of puzzles from the original Silent Hill 2, the remake contains several new puzzles and conundrums for James to solve.
Silent Hill 2 Remake Main Characters
The horrifying and tragic Silent Hill 2 remake follows the same basic story as the 2001 original, placing players into the shoes of everyman James Sunderland. After his wife’s death, James has apparently led an aimless life. One day, he receives a mysterious letter in the mail from his wife, Mary, claiming that she is waiting for him in the town of Silent Hill. Armed with this information, James heads to Silent Hill, only to quickly discover that something about the town is not quite right. Joining James is a cast of supporting characters, each of whom has their own tragic connection to the titular town. The main characters in Silent Hill 2 include:
- James Sunderland: The main character and protagonist of Silent Hill 2. James is an aimless alcoholic after the unexpected death of his wife. His guilt, and his inability to process it, are at the core of his character development.
- Angela: Angela is the first person James meets after entering Silent Hill. She is an abuse survivor and is apprehensive toward James for fear of his ulterior motives.
- Maria: A mysterious resident of Silent Hill who bears a striking resemblance to James’ late wife, Mary.
- Eddie: An emotionally stunted and mentally disturbed young man who believes to be the butt of everyone’s joke.
- Laura: A mysterious little girl who appears to have an emotional connection to Mary and an apprehension toward James.
- Mary Sunderland: James’ late wife. Her sudden affliction with a terminal disease took her well before her time, and she now seemingly communicates with James from beyond the grave.
Games in the Silent Hill Series
Konami’s Silent Hill franchise has grown to become one of the pioneering forces in survival horror following its debut on the PlayStation. While the original was developed with a Western audience in mind to capture the attention of Resident Evil fans, the series takes a decidedly different approach to its horror, focusing on psychological terror and existential dread over jump scares and gore. The second Silent Hill game would only expand on this approach, going on to become one of the most beloved survival horror games ever made in the process. While the series has had its fair share of ups and downs, the love fans have for the mainline Silent Hill games helped make the recent remake of Silent Hill 2 one of 2024’s most talked-about games and a major success. Games in the Silent Hill series include:
- Silent Hill (PlayStation, 1999)
- Silent Hill 2 (PlayStation 2, 2001)

Silent Hill 2 Remake Cheat FAQs
Does the Konami Code do anything in the Silent Hill 2 remake?
The famous “Konami Code” (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A) works in several games from the publisher’s library, including some Silent Hill games. However, the Silent Hill 2 remake is not one of them. There is no known use for the Konami Code in the Silent Hill 2 remake.
Are there cheats in the Silent Hill 2 remake?
While there are no traditional cheats in Silent Hill 2, there are some additional settings players can unlock that provide cheat-like bonuses. These settings will unlock after beating the game at least once. PC players have the option of using a third-party cheat engine and cheat trainer files for Silent Hill 2.
Is Silent Hill 2 remake scary?
Whether a player considers a game to be truly scary is entirely subjective. That said, Silent Hill 2 is a very disturbing game that uses both visual and audio cues to unnerve players. Unlike the jump scares common in popular horror films and some horror games, Silent Hill 2 relies on an ever-present sense of dread to instill a type of psychological horror that can make playing the game for long stretches difficult. As a personal aside, Silent Hill 2 (both the original and the remake) is the only game I’ve ever turned off from feeling too overwhelmed. Depending on your stomach for existential dread, Silent Hill 2 requires these occasional mental breaks.
How long to beat the Silent Hill 2 remake?
Interestingly, the Silent Hill 2 remake is nearly double the length of the PlayStation 2 original. While the original Silent Hill 2‘s main story is roughly 8 hours long, most players will complete a standard playthrough of the Silent Hill 2 remake in about 15-17 hours. Taking your time in each of the game’s locations, solving every puzzle, finding every item, and earning every achievement/trophy will double that time. A full completionist playthrough of the Silent Hill 2 remake will take about 30 hours.
