Sony not Expecting Profits from PlayStation VR Launch

Sony not Expecting Profits from PlayStation VR Launch

A few days ago we discussed the external processing unit that will help power PlayStation VR’s hardware as it tackles some demanding audiovisual performance benchmarks. News of the processing unit has been generally well received because, frankly, we were all a little concerned that the PlayStation VR would attract underwhelming, boring software due to hardware limitations. The only possible downside to the inclusion of this extra unit is how it might affect pricing. Thankfully, Shuhei Yoshida recently hinted in an interview with Digital Spy that the PlayStation VR might be more modestly priced than predicted.

“We tend to price hardware not to make money from it but to get as many install base so that content can be sold,” Yoshida said. “This is the same kind of thinking in the way that we are approaching PlayStation VR.” This bodes well for consumers. If the average person sees PlayStation VR launching for the same price as a PS4 or more, that’s going to be a big problem; Joe and Jane Average don’t care how innovative the technology may be, the headset will still be seen as a peripheral, albeit a fancy one, and it should be priced accordingly.
