Sony to Provide PSP Game Rental Service?

None

According to alleged consumer surveys, a Develop magazine report, and CNET’s news blog, the PSP will soon receive a digital video game rental service and possible music downloads.

As outlined in a GameSpot news piece, Joystiq posted a scan of a consumer survey that stated “the service will enable you to download a fixed number of games during your subscription period… renew[ing] weekly, monthly, or for some other time period.”

Then it has been suggested by Develop magazine that developers have known about the service since GDC. Finally, CNET’s news blog has revealed that Sony is currently in preliminary talks with various record labels in order to bring an iTunes-like music service to the Sony handheld device.

All of this is little more than pieced-together, unsubstantiated speculation. As such, take all this with a large grain of salt. Still, Sony has been perturbed that Apple stole the portable music device market they created out from under them for a long while now. Moreover, the PSP (or even the rumored PSP Go!) along with a solid download service for purchasing and renting digital entertainment could go a long way toward reestablishing their dominance in the sector.
