The new year marks a shift in the life of gamers and the industry alike but on January 1st, 2025 one of the most unexpected announcements of all time came from Notch of all people. On New Year’s Day, Notch made a poll where he claims to have “basically announced Minecraft 2”. Now, unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you feel about the controversial developer, Notch no longer owns the rights to Minecraft.
However, if he were to make a spiritual successor that is pretty much a “Minecraft 2″ he would have the opportunity to make some sweeping changes to the formula bringing Minecraft to even higher heights. Here are the 5 things, Minecraft 2 absolutely needs.
Better Graphics
Minecraft’s graphics are iconic but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement. Many phenomenal mods increase the resolution of the textures in baseMinecraft. But maybe it’s time for a new art direction. The blocky aesthetic is pretty much synonymous with Minecraft at this point but the developers can iterate on it by implementing the following changes:
Directional Lighting is first and foremost. There are already lighting mods and texture packs but it would be nice if it were in the base game. Also, speaking of textures maybe they can be modernized while keeping that block aesthetic. Maybe the grass blocks can change depending on a new Seasons mechanic.
Another way the graphics can be improved is by improving the models. Give the characters subtle details or even emotes.
Skills
Minecraft is one of the best crafting/survival games on the market and has been for many years. However, there is still room for improvement. Compared to other, newer, survival games it is lacking in a specific part of the progression department. Minecraft 2 should introduce a Skill System. This skill system could even be applied so that people who want a classic experience can ignore it entirely.
These skills can include Foraging, Cooking, Fishing, and Endurance for those who prioritize the survival aspect of Minecraft‘s gameplay loop. Other players who prefer to spend thousands of hours in creative could do so without completely removing the game’s challenge through increasing mining and gathering skills.
Minecraft already has experience, its sequel would benefit from more things to do with it.
Boss Fights
Minecraft already has boss fights in a certain sense but when compared to other games it does leave a bit to be desired. Minecraft 2 has an interesting opportunity to expand on the bosses in the game and give it an MMO feel. Maybe they can implement world bosses that are tied to specific biomes like a forest spirit protecting rare trees.
Players could even find hints about finding it in village chests through books or other notes. Bosses could also be implemented in dungeons. In the base game, finding generated structures is super cool the first time you do it but usually there’s nothing exciting to find or do inside them. Dungeon bosses can fix this by adding unique mobs with unique mechanics to these structures.
Steam Support
Steam has nearly monopolized PC gaming but no one minds because it’s the best gaming store front hands down. It’s good for gamers and creators alike and while other stores like itch.io and Epic Games have their strengths, nothing beats Steam. This addition probably doesn’t matter as much as some of the other entries on this list however it would be much more appreciated.
A lot of gamers, myself included, primarily use Steam to game with our friends. Being able to send each other invites to our games through its interface just works. No one likes using third-party services to play with their friends, so why not integrate it or release Minecraft 2 on the platform everyone’s already using?
Story Mode
Minecraft2 should have a story mode and I believe all the pieces are present to make an engaging one. Of course, the story would probably be a non-linear one. They could pull from games like Dark Souls and Breath of the Wild to tell a more environmental tale. This would allow players to tackle objectives in any order or even ignore the story completely. A design like this would mesh perfectly with the freedom and choice of Minecraft.
Maybe NPCs can give out quests for players that tie into dungeons for them to find. These quests could also be about defending a village or a fetch quest requiring exploring ravines. This also would open up the door for Villagers to be overhauled. Some villagers can be full-on characters with dreams, unique designs, and character arcs. A Minecraft sequel that puts extra effort into telling a great story would be amazing.
