The Best Roguelike FPS Games on Steam
The roguelike may have originated thanks to its genesis from 1980's Rogue, but it has since evolved into one of the most popular and iterated upon subgenres in gaming. Action roguelikes, in particular, have become especially prolific, owing to the widespread critical acclaim and commercial success of games like Supergiant's Hades. But while most action roguelikes do skew more heavily toward Hades-style hack-and-slash combat, there's a growing number of FPS roguelike games that are proving that first-person shooting is a natural fit for the structure and randomization of a roguelike. It's a genre that's still relatively in its infancy, but the following are 10 of the best roguelike FPS games currently available on Steam.
Battle Shapers
- Release Date — December 4, 2024
- Developer — Metric Empire
- Publisher — Metric Empire, Kepler Ghost
- Review Aggregate Score — N/A
- Steam User Score — 81% (Very Positive)
A newer FPS roguelike that mixes both satisfying shooting and devastating up-close melee combat, Battle Shapers is a bit of an underrated game in the subgenre. It's worth noting that runs in Battle Shapers tend to last longer than most FPS roguelikes, with an average of 90 minutes not uncommon, but the action and visual flair packed into those 90 minutes is ultimately worth the time commitment. Notably, Battle Shapers is available as part of a bundle on Steam that includes another of the best FPS roguelikes (and one that's also on this list): Deadlink.
Bloodshed
- Release Date — May 22, 2025
- Developer — com8com1 Software
- Publisher — Headup
- Review Aggregate Score — N/A (Early Access)
- Steam User Score — 89% (Very Positive)
The recently released Bloodshed is only in Early Access, and it's already one of the most promising games in the FPS roguelike subgenre. Part boomer shooter and part Vampire Survivors, Bloodshed prides itself on practically overwhelming the player with the number of enemies it throws at them, but it also gives them plenty of offensive capabilities to help them survive each run. Like Vampire Survivors, there are multiplayer "Slayers" to choose from that shake up the flow of combat, and each of them is fun to use.
Post Void
- Release Date — August 6, 2020
- Developer — YCJY Games
- Publisher — YCJY Games
- Review Aggregate Score — 76% (Generally Favorable)
- Steam User Score — 97% (Overwhelmingly Positive)
YCJY's Post Void is an earlier game in the FPS roguelike subgenre that remains a player favorite thanks to its breakneck speed and adherence to old-school first-person shooter game design. In terms of how it looks and plays, imagine Wolfenstein 3D processed through a psychedelic filter and with the speed cranked up to 300%, and you're not far off. But like the best roguelikes, Post Void is an almost perfect game to fire up if you only have a few minutes and want to pack as much adrenaline-pumping thrills into that small window of time.
Gunfire Reborn
- Release Date — November 17, 2021
- Developer — Duoyi Games
- Publisher — Duoyi Games
- Review Aggregate Score — 75% (Generally Favorable)
- Steam User Score — 93% (Very Positive)
Probably one of the more well-known FPS roguelikes, Gunfire Reborn is a great title that follows closely in the footsteps of standard first-person shooters like Overwatch and Borderlands but mixes those inspirations with the structure of a roguelike. The Overwatch inspiration comes via the ability to select from distinct characters who each embody a sort of Hero Shooter archetype, while the Borderlands inspirations are front and center in the game's RPG-style progression and dopamine rush-inducing loot drops. Ultimately, it's a successful mix that makes Gunfire Reborn one of the definitive FPS roguelike games.
Deadlink
- Release Date — July 27, 2023
- Developer — Grubby Entertainment
- Publisher — SuperGG.com
- Review Aggregate Score — 81% (Generally Favorable)
- Steam User Score — 90% (Very Positive)
It's surprising to see that Deadlink's Steam User Score isn't higher than it is, because for my money, it's absolutely one of the best FPS roguelike games available. In Deadlink, players get to select from an impressive array of characters to take into a gritty cyberpunk setting and mow down scores of enemies, and the game's art style and visuals only serve to highlight the smooth movement and gunplay. It's Deadlink's movement that's arguably the star of the show, with the kind of acrobatics you'd normally see in classic arena shooters like Unreal Tournament or Quake III.
Nightmare Reaper
- Release Date — March 28, 2022
- Developer — Blazing Bit Games
- Publisher — Blazing Bit Games
- Review Aggregate Score — 82% (Generally Favorable)
- Steam User Score — 93% (Very Positive)
Not many of the games on this list are known for their stories as much as their gameplay, and that's what helps set Nightmare Reaper apart. As a young woman in a psychiatric facility, you must delve into the depths of your own nightmares to stop the evil that dwells there, all in the guise of being a one-woman army pulled straight from classic FPS games like Doom or Quake. Nightmare Frontier's premise and story segments are interesting enough as it is, but it also happens to back those elements up with some incredibly solid gunplay and addictive RPG-style progression that give it the classic "just one more run" quality you want in a roguelike.
Cruel
- Release Date — January 9, 2025
- Developer — James Dornan
- Publisher — James Dornan
- Review Aggregate Score — N/A
- Steam User Score — 95% (Overwhelmingly Positive)
Take one part Quake, one part iconic 1997 FPS Blood, and a dash of action roguelike, and you have the incredible Cruel. Another of the newer FPS roguelikes to quickly make a name for itself within the subgenre, Cruel excels specifically because it understands the core conceit of a roguelike - endless replayability and quick runs that are easy to addictively fall right back into. Failure will come often in Cruel, which is aptly named given its brutality and difficulty curve, but you'll have so much fun that it's practically impossible not to immediately jump back in after a run ends unceremoniously.
Mullet Madjack
- Release Date — May 15, 2024
- Developer — HAMMER95
- Publisher — HAMMER95, Epopeia Games
- Review Aggregate Score — 88% (Generally Favorable)
- Steam User Score — 97% (Overwhelmingly Positive)
Like I mentioned in my review for Mullet Madjack, HAMMER95's FPS roguelike is a perfect blend of 90s anime, Hotline Miami, and Johnny Mnemonic that has to be seen in action to be believed. As a contestant in a Running Man-like reality show in a future where the phone-addicted populace needs a constant stream of dopamine to survive, you must quickly make your way up the floors of a skyscraper to kill the "Robobillionaires" who have kidnapped your girlfriend. Fail to keep the ratings high through ultraviolence, and the show gets "cancelled", which means the end of Mullet Madjack as well. Mullet Madjack is incredibly fast, the combat is spectacular, and it's one of the best roguelikes, period, much less one of the great FPS roguelikes.
Deadzone: Rogue
- Release Date — April 29, 2025
- Developer — Prophecy Games
- Publisher — Prophecy Games
- Review Aggregate Score — N/A (Early Access)
- Steam User Score — 82% (Very Positive)
The sign of a good roguelike is being able to boot it up for the first time, immediately get sucked in, and then somehow lose a couple hours as one run gives way to several. By that metric, Deadzone: Rogue is a game to keep an eye on as a potential frontrunner for one of the best FPS roguelikes and one of the best roguelikes, in general. You awaken on a derelict spaceship swarming with an impressive variety of enemy types and must work your way through the ship's different sections, gaining powers and improving your weaponry along the way. Deadzone: Rogue already has a compelling loop and some satisfying Doom-inspired gunplay, and it's only in Early Access, meaning it has every chance to improve on an already strong foundation.
Roboquest
- Release Date — November 7, 2023
- Developer — RyseUp Studios
- Publisher — RyseUp Studios, Starbreeze Entertainment
- Review Aggregate Score — 85% (Generally Favorable)
- Steam User Score — 95% (Overwhelmingly Positive)
After years spent in Early Access as one of the first and most well-known FPS roguelike games, Roboquest finally released into 1.0. in 2023, and it's still arguably uncontested as the best game in the subgenre. RyseUp Studios has also continued to support the title long after its launch, with new content, balance tweaks, and performance patches regularly arriving to polish Roboquest into the much-beloved game that is likely going to be most players' first recommendation when asked about FPS roguelike games.
