The Government Is Spying on Your MMOs

Did you know that your favorite MMOs are actually shady dens of terrorist activity? At least, that’s what the NSA would have you believe. The NSA, as well as its sister agency in the UK, the GCHQ, have started a new initiative to infiltrate online gaming communities. They will be collecting communication information from these games including chat logs, voice communications, and more. In addition, real life agents have been dispatched to these online worlds, sent to snoop around to find any evidence of terrorism. There were even attempts to recruit informants from the game’s user bases.

This information comes from documents leaked from everyone’s favorite government tattletale, Edward Snowden. Two games in particular were mentioned: Second Life and World of Warcraft. The document was written back in 2008, and posited that Al-Qaida terrorist target selectors were active in these two games, as well as Xbox Live. There is currently no evidence that these initiatives have stopped any terrorist threat.

These are your tax dollars at work people. We live in a world where the government basically uses terrorism as an excuse to pay for the FBI’s World of Warcraft addiction.
