The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Cheats & Cheat Codes for Nintendo 64

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is one of the most iconic video games of all time. Upon its Nintendo 64 release in 1998, it was seen as truly groundbreaking, and wrote the blueprint for every Legend of Zelda title to come. While the game may pale in comparison nowadays to the likes of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, its legendary legacy is secure among the gaming community.

As the first title in the franchise to feature 3D graphics, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time opened up a new world of gameplay opportunities. In the game, you’re traversing the Hyrule Kingdom to stop Ganondorf from obtaining the Triforce from the Sacred Realm. This leads you on a quest to locate the three Spiritual Stones, as well as the Ocarina of Time itself. On top of this, you’ll be led to seek out the Six Sages to help stop Ganondorf, all leading to one final confrontation.

The game features core gameplay mechanics of dungeon-crawling and third-person combat. Alongside this, you’ll adventure through Hyrule Field, an overworld that serves as a connection between these dungeons. Oh, and did we mention there’s time travel, too? There’s a whole lot going on here, and by 1998 standards, it was remarkably ambitious.

The Legend of Zelda games are rather unique. They continue to tell stories based on the same main characters, time after time. This means that if you’ve played any Legend of Zelda game over the past few decades, you’ll probably recognize these main characters.

  • Link: Equipped with the Hylian Shield and the Master Sword, there aren’t many characters in video games more instantly recognizable than Link. Tasked with restoring peace to Hyrule, the courageous Link fulfills his destiny in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
  • Zelda: Princess Zelda takes a more active role in the story of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. She’s the one who sends Link on the quest to find the Spiritual Stones, and goes into hiding when Link is sealed in the Sacred Realm for seven years. Later disguised as Sheik, Zelda helps Link find and save the Six Sages, as well as defeat Ganondorf after he transforms into Ganon.
  • Ganondorf: As the main antagonist of The Legend of Zelda series, Ganondorf is a thorn in the side for Link. In Ocarina of Time, Ganondorf enters a race against time with Link to find the Triforce, in an attempt to become ruler of Hyrule.

What Happens If I Name Myself “Zelda” in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time?

It’s a common theme with older games to hide cheat codes in the names of save files. However, that isn’t the case with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Sadly, there’s no reward for naming yourself Zelda in-game, or anything else for that matter.

There were rumors online years ago that naming yourself morup provided you with a gold rupee that gave you unlimited money, but there’s no proof that this ever actually worked.

Do The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Cheats Work on an Emulator?

Many players nowadays choose to experience The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on PC via an emulator. Unfortunately, this means you’re unable to use cheat codes for the game. GameShark cartridges require a Nintendo 64 in order to work.

However, using an emulator does mean that you’re able to use PC mods for the game, so there are still some benefits to this method.

Do These Cheats Work on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D?

Unfortunately not. The Nintendo 64 codes for the original game don’t work. You can still use a GameShark or Action Replay cartridge, but it has to be one released specifically for the Nintendo 3DS. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D on 3DS features its very own set of cheat codes that work on that platform.
