THQ And Obsidian Working On South Park: The Game

This week, THQ and Obsidian Entertainment announced that they would be heading up a new RPG based on the South Park series.

The game, currently titled South Park: The Game, will be written by Matt Stone and Trey Parker, who created the Comedy Central series in 1997. Stone and Parker will also handle some of the voice acting, which isn’t surprising since together they voice almost 40 recurring characters on the show.

Putting Obsidian Entertainment at the helm of the South Park property was a pretty brilliant move by the South Park team. Hardcore gamers often ignore franchises that stem from cartoon series because the developers typically don’t take the gameplay aspect of development very seriously. But Obsidian has been behind a few of the most impressive RPGs in recent years: Fallout: New Vegas, the Neverwinter Nights 2 series, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, just to name a few.

Danny Bilson, Core Games EVP at THQ, has a simple vision for the project: “Our goal is simple: to put creative talent first,” he said. “Matt and Trey are arguably two of the most important comedic talents of their generation. Bringing their vision of South Park to the interactive space is a dream-come-true.”

I must admit, I’m not quite sure how a South Park-themed RPG is going to play out, but I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a Rainbow Bright game if THQ and Obsidian were behind it.
