Originally released for the Nintendo 64 on March 4, 1997, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is a first-person shooter developed by UK-based Iguana Entertainment and published by Acclaim Entertainment. The title is noteworthy for being both the first FPS title on the Nintendo 64 (a console that would soon become a favorite among FPS players) as well as being one of the first third-party games published for the console. The title is loosely based on the Valiant Comics property of the same name, which Acclaim acquired the rights to produce games based on in 1994. Following the successful launch of the title on the Nintendo 64, Acclaim would bring Turok: Dinosaur Hunter to Windows PCs later in the same year.
The arrival of Turok on the Nintendo 64 was a major turning point for the console, helping to bring a new audience to the platform and acting as one of the first original FPS titles in the N64’s library. The game was a massive critical and commercial success, selling more than 1.5 million units and earning praise for its intuitive controls and lengthy single-player campaign. The title’s arrival in the same year as high-profile PC ports of popular FPS titles, as well as its launch just a few months ahead of the classic GoldenEye 007, sees Turok earning a place as one of the more beloved first-person shooters on the Nintendo 64, which would ultimately help the title get a remaster in 2019 courtesy of Nightdive Studios.
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter Premise

Taking place in the modern era, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter sees players take on the role of the titular hero, the latest in a long line of time-traveling Native American warriors who defend Earth from the dangers of the Lost Land — a strange and mysterious prehistoric realm where time has no meaning and fearsome predators sit at the top of the food chain. When a warlord invades the Lost Land with his personal army in the hopes of becoming its new leader and using the power of time to destroy the barrier between it and Earth, Turok/Tal’Set steps in to beat him to the punch, racing to collect the scattered pieces of a powerful weapon called the Chronoscepter.
In terms of its gameplay, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is fairly similar to most other first-person shooters of the era. Players navigate through maze-like maps with branching pathways, defeating enemies and collecting keys along the way that open up each level further before eventually making it to an end-of-level exit point. Where Turok differs is in its use of a hub area that players can regularly return to, revisiting past levels to collect the 8 pieces of the Chronoscepter, which requires players to carefully search for secret areas. Turok has standard first-person shooter weapons at his disposal, including a pistol, shotgun, submachine gun, and mini-gun, but he also has more traditional weaponry, such as a knife and a bow and arrow. As the name of the game might suggest, most of the enemies in Turok are a mix of human and dinosaur foes.
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter Main Characters

Taking inspiration from the Turok series published by Valiant Comics, Turok: The Dinosaur Hunter sees players take on the role of the Native American warrior Tal’Set, the latest in a line of dinosaur-hunting, time-traveling Turoks charged with protecting humanity against the Lost Land, a mysterious prehistoric realm. When an evil warlord known as the Campaigner sets his army’s sights on the Lost Land in search of retrieving its most fabled and powerful relic, the Chronoscepter, Turok must race against time to retrieve the Chronoscepter himself and stop the Campaigner before it’s too late. The main characters in Turok: Dinosaur Hunter include:
- Tal’Set/Turok: The player character and titular protagonist of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, the Native American warrior Tal’Set is one of a long line of Turoks charged with defending the barrier between Earth and the Lost Land.
- The Campaigner: A megalomaniacal warlord with his own personal army, the Campaigner is the main antagonist of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. He invades the Lost Land to retrieve the Chronoscepter in the hopes of using it to destroy the barrier between Earth and the Lost Land, becoming the undisputed ruler of the universe in the process.
Games in the Turok Series
The first Turok: The Dinosaur Hunter would prove to be a major success for Acclaim, acting as one of the early hit first-person shooters on the Nintendo 64 ahead of the launch of GoldenEye 007 just a few months later. Accordingly, Iguana Entertainment and Acclaim would quickly follow up with a set of sequels in an attempt to turn the standalone game into a full-blown franchise. While both Turok 2 and Turok 3 were well-received, the Turok series mostly died out with the 5th generation. However, a later 7th-generation reboot would give the series a nice boost in popularity, even if it wasn’t critically or commercially successful. More recently, Nightdive Studios has done remasters of the main Turok trilogy for modern consoles and PC, paving the way for a brand-new entry in the franchise. Games in the Turok series include:
- Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (Nintendo 64, PC, 1997)
- Turok 2: Seeds of Evil (Nintendo 64, Game Boy Color, 1998)
- Turok 2: Seeds of Evil (PC, 1999)

Here, players can enter any of the game’s cheat codes. To activate any cheats you’ve entered, pause the game during gameplay and navigate to the cheat menu. Here, you will be able to toggle any activated cheats.
Does the PC version of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter have cheats?
Yes, the PC version of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter has several available cheats, many of which are the same as the original Nintendo 64 version’s. However, the original PC release of Turok (not the remaster by Nightdive Studios) has two different versions: a retail version and a 3DFX version. The cheats will differ depending on which version of Turok PC players have installed.
Do Turok: Dinosaur Hunter cheats still work in the remaster?
Yes, the cheats from the original PC and Nintendo 64 versions of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter still work in the Remastered version from Nightdive Studios. Do note that activating cheats in the remaster will disable achievements.
How long to beat Turok: Dinosaur Hunter?
The single-player campaign of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is actually fairly short in comparison to some other contemporary first-person shooters of the era. Most players can clear a playthrough of Turok in 7-10 hours, but it may take longer for players to collect all keys and find all the game’s secrets (including re-forging the game’s secret weapon). To 100% complete Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, players can expect to spend 10-15 hours.
