The best and most iconic game over screens go the extra mile to feature memorable visuals, rub salt in players' wounds, or both. Whether it’s chilling imagery, a fourth wall break, or an over-the-top sound effect, here are some game over screens that left a lasting mark on those of us who met them.

If you lost all of your lives in Banjo-Kazooie, you would be met with a game-over scene depicting the main villainess succeeding in her evil plan. Gruntilda uses her contraption to swap appearances with Banjo’s sister Tooty, and the witch becomes an over-the-top curvy caricature of herself. Dynamic game overs to this extent don’t really happen anymore, and they stay in the minds of players because of just how much effort was put into them. However, the more you think about it, Banjo-Kazooie's game-over screen was as funny as it was chilling.

Chrono Trigger is one of the most beloved RPGs of all time, and its story can take some surprisingly dark turns. If you lose the final battle against the main villain, Lavos, Chrono Trigger doesn’t just display the normal "Game Over”; it instead shows you the future formed from your failure, accompanied by the chilling message, “But… the future refused to change.” Fourth-wall breaks are nothing new when it comes to gaming, but this one hits a bit differently. It emotionally provokes the player, inspiring you to hop back in.

Funnily, one of the most iconic game-over scenes doesn’t even say "Game Over". Instead, the Grand Theft Auto series opts to simply let players know they've been “Wasted”. With one simple message to reiterate players' often hilarious and chaotic failures, Rockstar singlehandedly created a meme. It turns what would normally be a frustrating failure into a moment of levity that can be laughed off. Grand Theft Auto's game over screen is so recognizable and iconic that you can almost hear the metallic "clank" that accompanies it just from looking at the picture.

When it comes to the most dramatic game over sequences and screens in gaming, few do it better than Metal Gear Solid. It's the over-the-top voice-overs that accompany this game over screen that really sell it. Solid Snake’s support team screaming into his codec earpiece as the Mission Failed text appears is nothing short of iconic. Also, the “Snake? Snake!? Being told, “You have died of dysentery,” in such a matter-of-fact way, is peak humor, especially if you played the title in school like a lot of us did. Best of all, the blunt, matter-of-fact game over screen appears every single time someone in your party dies, meaning you'll get to see it plenty of times before having to restart. Pac-Man’s game over screen isn’t too unique when compared to the other arcade games that came out around the same time. But Pac-Man's game over is a lot more than just an image.
