Wii U Supports Free-To-Play Games

Wii U Supports Free-To-Play Games

None

Nintendo has never been all that excited about free-to-play games. It wasn’t so long ago that Satoru Iwata said that Nintendo is not interested in free-to-play titles at all, claiming they destroy the value of game software and insert unreasonable expectations into the minds of gamers everywhere.

Well, even though Nintendo and Iwata apparently do not like them very much, the Wii U will support them. Iwata recently said in an investor Q&A that Nintendo has designed the Wii U system to allow developers to take advantage of the free-to-play market. Its online architecture freely supports things like microtransactions and free downloads.

However, Iwata reaffirmed that Nintendo is not interested in offering first-party free-to-play content, saying “I don’t think that’s a direction that we should go in right now.” However, he did follow that up by saying its possible in the future that Nintendo might have an IP that supports the free-to-play model, but that’s just not the direction they are going in right now.
