Will Continued Xbox 360 And PS3 Support Strangle the Wii U?

Will Continued Xbox 360 And PS3 Support Strangle the Wii U?

Last week, Cheat Code Central’s Jake Valentine penned a little article pointing out that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 aren’t going anywhere—at least not for a few years. Over 76 million people already own an Xbox 360, and the PlayStation 3 has shipped over 77 million consoles. So, Sony and Microsoft would have to be stupid to completely abandon these systems at this point.

Games like Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Watch_Dogs , and Call of Duty: Ghosts are going to show up on as many systems as their developers can manage, which is extremely good news for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners, but it might not be perfect for Nintendo’s lackluster console: the Wii U.

Compared to the current generation of consoles, The Wii U is a relatively impressive piece of hardware. However, when lined up against the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the Wii U feels extremely underpowered. So, the fact that 3rd-party developers are planning to continue their support for the last generation of consoles makes the Wii U seem even less impressive.

EA has been upfront about their lack of interest in the Wii U, and developers like Ubisoft have had to rework their Wii U strategy. But, if we’re being honest, none of these things are going to make the Wii U successful.

Nintendo’s consoles have always lived and died on their first-party support, and the developer’s lineup is really starting to come together. Games like Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3 , and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker are heading to the Wii U very soon. So, Wii U ownership may see a sudden surge of popularity.

3rd-party support has been a huge part of Sony and Microsoft’s strategy, especially Microsoft, but Nintendo can survive without it. So even though Nintendo probably isn’t excited about the system’s lack of developers, it doesn’t mean that the console is dead in the water.

However, if the Wii U does eventually meet an untimely end, it’s going to be because Nintendo can’t stop delaying their games. If I don’t get the play Pikmin 3 soon, I’m going to strangle a baby.
