Xbox 360 to Do away with MS Points; Implementing User Ratings for Content; Enhancing Avatars

In addition to the much ballyhooed Games on Demand service (which allows you to purchase and download full titles to your Xbox 360), Last.fm radio, Instant on Netflix, Facebook and Twitter apps, Xbox LIVE will soon be updated in a few other meaningful ways that slipped under the radar.

Ars Technica broke the news, in a meeting with Microsoft’s Scott Austin, that the archaic Microsoft Points value system is thankfully going the way of the dodo. Downloads will now be priced according to the region or country’s local currency. That means no more fussing with 0.8 to 1 conversions for U.S. gamers.

Additionally, it was revealed that user ratings will soon be implemented to help gamers sift through the ever-increasing amount of content on Xbox LIVE. Austin stated, “One thing that customers have been asking for is more information about games, especially for community games or game add-ons that don’t get a lot of coverage or reviews, so we’re introducing user ratings.” The rating system will be based off the five star system; such as the one we use here at Cheat Code Central.

Finally, Avatars will also be getting more support in the future. While buying clothing and accessories in order to play dolly is not high on my list of priorities, the ability to unlock such goods by beating games is something I’ve wanted to see since Avatars were announced. It now appears that such rewards will be implemented on top of Achievements.
