I should stop being surprised by Nintendo, yet somehow, they always amaze me. Nintendo Labo , the accessory-slash-game where you assemble carboard pieces into toys to use as controllers for games that you either buy or design is an extremely weird thing. As of yesterday, this wonky controller can be used to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch.
The control scheme is reminiscent of the Nintendo Wii version of Mario Kart which worked with the Wii Wheel –a plastic circle that held a Wii Remote. This is really not much different; the Nintendo Labo Variety Pack ‘s Motorcycle Toy-Con’s fixture holds the Switch and senses input that way. I will say, though, that the handlebars sticking off of the assembly do seem to offer a more controller, grounded experience, despite the fact that, again, you are playing with carboard.
The update is available for free, but Nintendo Labo can set you back $69.99. It may be worth the cost of entry, though, because the things you can make in the variety kit are pretty cool and the potential to make and program new things is even cooler. I hope to see more games support Nintendo Labo in the future.
