It was a long, long time ago-- Even before the Mana Goddess was born. A great witch from a realm yet unknown brought darkness to the world. Anise was her name. The odious witch was defeated by the guardians of the great tree-- But legend tells that her darkness and curse seeped through and spread over to many other worlds. And yet another legend has it-- When the world was still covered in darkness-- The Mana Goddess used the Sword of Mana to defeat the benevodos that would lead the world to doom... Then sealed them into eight stones. This is how darkness retreated and the world was created. After completing her creation, the Mana Goddess turned herself into a large, wizened tree. It is told that the Mana Tree and the sword continue to watch the world from the forbidden Sanctuary. Time has passed-- Valsena, the kingdom of green fields Ferolia, the kingdom of Beastmen Altena, the kingdom of sorcery Wendel, the holy capital Laurent, the aerial fortress Nevarl, the fortress in the sand The nations of the world were shrouded in a peaceful but fleeting slumber... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [OVERVIEW] Overview Seiken Densetsu: Heroes of Mana is the second game from Square-Enix's Seiken Densetsu series on the Nintendo DS, and is developed by the company Brownie Brown, partly comprised of several former Square-Enix employees who worked on Seiken Densetsu 3. The game is set 19 years before the events of Seiken Densetsu 3, a game which was never released outside Japan, although a very complete and excellent fan translation did do the round on the web. As such, there are several characters in HoM that are either related to characters and events in SD3, or who appear as NPCs in the aforementioned predeceasing sequel (anyone else notice that strange tremor in the force?). The nature of the game is that of a Real Time Strategy game, the same genre as worldwide PC successes Warcraft (the original, not "World of"), Starcraft and Command & Conquer. There are a few differences, which will be detailed later in the guide. The game is heavily touch-screen based (to the point where buttons are rarely used), so have your screen protectors ready (don't worry, it's not as bad as Lost Magic in that respect... I still have the mark of several consecutive Fire Runes on my screen guard). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [FAQ] Frequently Asked Questions Q. Does this game have SD3 included in it? A. No, it does not. There were several online and magazine articles regarding Heroes of Mana prior to release that included screenshots of Seiken Densetsu 3 that were part of the original press pack provided by Square-Enix. These were included for referential purposes, as the game takes place 19 years before SD3 and many of the characters have some form of relation to events or characters in SD3. The game is NOT however included in Heroes of Mana. Q. Is this like Lost Magic? A. Yes and No. Yes, in that you do control one or various main humanoid characters, and in addition several monsters, or MOBs as they are called in the game, that do your dirty work for you. However, Lost Magic had you going out and capturing monsters to then use later, and you could only have a certain set of them which you determine before a mission. In Heroes of Mana you get better MOBs as you progress in the game, and during missions you spawn these MOBs as you need them, again, similar to Warcraft (there are exceptions to this rule for certain missions, again this will be covered in depth later in the guide). Q. Any news on the game's OST? A. Yes, the OST has a release date set for the 18th of April 2007, is comprised of 2 discs, and is available at Play-Asia.com for around $25USD. It is composed by Yoko Shimomura, who also worked on Legend of Mana, Street Fighter 2 and more recently the Kingdom Hearts series. Q. What other games are there in the Mana series? A. In Chronological Release order: -Pre-World of Mana releases: The Emergence of Excalibur (Never Released, cancelled 1987) Seiken Densetsu [1]: Final Fantasy Adventure (GB) - June 8th 1991 Seiken Densetsu 2: Secret of Mana (SNES) - August 6th 1993 Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES) - September 30th 1995 Seiken Densetsu: Legend of Mana (PSX) - July 15th 1999 Shinyaku Seiken Densetsu: Sword of Mana (GBA) - August 29th 2003 -World of Mana releases: Seiken Densetsu DS: Children of Mana (NDS) - March 2nd 2006 Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden (Mobile Phone) - 2006 Seiken Densetsu: Friends of Mana (Mobile Phone) - October 12th 2006 Seiken Densetsu 4: Dawn of Mana (PS2) - December 21st 2006 Seiken Densetsu: Heroes of Mana (NDS) - March 8th 2007 There were also two Manga series created, one based on Legend of Mana (released 2000 in 5 volumes by Shiro Amano) and Princess of Mana (takes place 300 years after CoM, due to be released 2007). Q. What is the timeline of the Mana series? A. Although there are many speculations on the timeline of the games, Koichi Ishii has mentioned that there is not necessarily a relation between different parts of the series. At present we do have several games that are stated to be directly connected, and they are: 1. Dawn of Mana occurs 10 years before Children of Mana 2. Heroes of Mana occurs 19 years before Seiken Densetsu 3 3. Friends of Mana occurs 10 years before Legend of Mana Unconfirmed speculation places Final Fantasy Adventure/Gaiden/Sword of Mana and Secret of Mana as taking place, in that order, after the events of Seiken Densetsu 3. FoM and LoM are suspected to occur on a different plain of reality to the rest of the games. Q. What ties does this have to SD3? A. There are several characters who are either refered to in SD3 or appear in SD3 as NPCs. None of the main characters from SD3 make a direct appearance though. (This answer may change at a later stage, who knows.) Q. Does this game have multiplayer options? A. Yes, there is a Vs. Battle option which allows you to play against someone else with a DS and a copy of the game. Q. Does this game have Wifi? A. Yes, but not for multiplayer options. The Wifi functionality allows you to unlock items and free-battles and compare your ranking with other players. The higher your ranking, the better the items that you unlock. From what I can see, each week a new free-battle option is unlocked. Q. Is there Download Play? A. No, the other player must have a copy of the game. Whether this game must be the same region or not is currently unknown. Q. I've killed everything in Chapter 3 but the mission won't finish! A. Your main Leader Unit, Roget, must reach the gates of the castle (where the Vehicle-type MOB was, for the mission to complete. Q. What is the sword Roget is holding in his hand in the intro FMV? A. It is the Mana Sword. The design follows that which was designed for SD4 and CoM, and has now become the standard artwork for the Mana Sword. Q. Will my gaming experience be hampered if I haven't played SD3? A. No, as the two run on separate systems, and also because the game occurs BEFORE the events of SD3, playing SD3 is not a requirement to getting the most out of this game. However, I would recommend playing SD3 as it is a great game, and the connections add on top of the sole gaming experience. Q. Does this game use the same locations as SD3? Why are the names different? A. The locations are indeed the same, however the romanization of the names differs from the original walkthroughs that were made for SD3 before the fan translation, and later the fan translation names (ie Naba'al, Navarre, Nevarl). Q. Does this game have left-handed mode? A. I'm afraid it does not. The game was designed to only move the map with the D-button. Quite the bum deal for anyone who is left-handed. Q. Does this game have Skirmish Mode? A. If by this you mean the ability to replay already completed maps, then no, you cannot revisit stages unless you start a new game and reach them again (which when you're writing a walkthrough is a major pain). Nor are there randomly generated maps with variable options to play against the computer in a similar way to the DS-to-DS multiplay. There are however Bonus Maps that have new missions using the game's maps for added fun, and extra items for each one. Q. How long is the game? A. There are 26 main storyline missions, playable on Normal and Hard mode, and 43 Bonus Maps. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [CONTROLS] Controls This game is heavy on the use of the Stylus, and you could even play it without pressing any buttons at all (though you would be making your life exceedingly difficult by doing so). You won't get away with not using the touch screen though, so you may want to consider investing in a screen protector and making sure your DS is correctly calibrated. During the dialogue sequences, you need only remember that A (or tapping the screen) will skip to the next line of dialogue, and B will fast-forward through the dialogue like there's no tomorrow (very handy on second play throughs or if you're playing the Japanese version of the game). During the missions, the controls will be as follows: -B button: Speed up gameplay -X button: Change from unit list to unit-type selection -L button: Rotate the playing area 90 degrees counter-clockwise -R button: Rotate the playing area 90 degrees clockwise -Start Button: Open the options menu -D-pad: Move the play area in the direction indicated (note, this does not follow the direction of the map on the top screen, but the bottom) -Touch screen: Unit selection, commands, the whole kaboodle really -Selecting and moving units To select a unit, you can either tap on that unit, click on the icon to the right of your screen that shows the stylus and draw a circle round the unit or units (this also pauses the game while you do so), or tap the avatar for that unit in your unit list at the bottom of the screen. These icons each represent a unit by their type and health status. Diamond avatars represent Hero units, Circles ones represent Gatherer units, and Squares represent Battle MOB units. Also when your units are carrying out an action (harvesting, attacking) they will turn into stars momentarily. The colour will show you how well your unit's health is doing. The closer it gets to red, the closer it is getting to dying a horrible death. Green and happy means health is between 81-100% Yellowy-green and indifferent means health is between 51-80% Yellow and drooping means health is between 31-50% Orange and rather down in the dumps means health is between 0-30% A health bar is displayed above each unit indicating the aproximate health of the unit, including enemies. To then move the unit or units selected, tap on bottom screen where you want them to move and they will do so, indicating their path with a series of white arrows. Note that in the event of a path being blocked, or being too narrow to get a certain number of the units through, some units may decide to seek out alternative routes, even if it means gonig into enemy territory, so keep an eye on where your units are heading. When moving multiple units, the first unit to the spot will occupy it, while the others will wander around the near area of the spot already occupied. If it frees up, another unit will take its place. You can also select all units of a certain type by changing your unit list to unit type mode. To do this, press the X button, and a set of icons depicting all the units types available to you will be displayed. Tap on on of these, and all units of that type will be selected. Also, when you manually select one or more units by tapping on the unit or encircling it, the type of units selected will flash on this icon list. -Terrain Note that certain units will only be able to move on certain terrain. Most units will move along the ground only, and can only jump up small steps. Jumping units can overcome changes in relief to a certain extent. Flying units can go practically anywhere. Aquatic units will move faster along water (that ground units can't tread) and slower on land. More detail on MOB types and how they handle terrain can be found in the MOB section later in the guide. -The Map The map in the top screen will show you the entire level. The lighter areas indicate the map that you have uncovered so far, and the darker the areas that are still to be unveiled. You will be able to see units and resources in the uncovered areas (even if no unit is currently there of yours). A red square will show you what part of the map corresponds to the play area you are currently viewing in the bottom screen. One corner of this square corresponds to where the compass (top left of your bottom screen) is situated in relation to the square. You will also see here a power guage that indicated how powerful your army is in comparison to the enemy's. Half-way means your even, and the more your green extends into the right side of the bar the more powerful you are in comparison, and vice-versa. -Map switching As well as moving the game area with the D-pad, you can also switch your screens so that the top map is displayed on the touch screen. A square will display the game area. Tap on a part of the map to move this square there, and the game screen will shift accordingly. You can then switch the screens back. This also allows you, if precise enough, to select units on the map, as well as centering the screen on them to use them. To switch the screens, use the icon in the top-right corner of the bottom screen. Note that this icon is also used in the information menus. -Rotating the screen You can rotate the screen in 90 degree increments either using the L and R buttons to rotate counter and clockwise respectively, or you can tap on the compass in the top left corner of the bottom screen to rotate clockwise by 90 degrees. Also note that the blue marker in this compass will indicate North. -Resources There are two resources to collect in the game. Gatherer units will head out to collect these and bring them back to the Nightswan Ship. First off is Gaia Stones. These are collected from mineral deposits with Gaia's face on them, and are used to build structures within your Ship. Then there are Treant Fruit, which is collected from trees with Treant's face. These are used to spawn MOB units from the structures in your ship. Each resource deposit has a limited quantity of mineral or fruit, and the less there is available the more droopy the deposit's face and general status will look (so the tree will wither, and the mineral deposit will look... well, more and more shagged out really). -Hidden treasure In each map there are hidden items that are found when any MOB unveils a certain square on the map. This is another reason to explore as much of the map as possible. A MOB finding an item will be indicated by a extended ascending chirpy melody and a speech bubble with an exclamation mark appearing over their unit-list avatar (if displayed). These items will be listed at the end of the level during the ranking screen. -Anchoring your ship The Nightswan Ship can be moved during a mission, but generally will stay anchored to a mooring point on the map. Some maps have several mooring points. The ship will only be able to carry out certain functions while anchored, such as spawning units, gathering resources from the Gatherers and summonning God- Beasts, but will be vulnerable to melee attacks also. While on the move, it will be vulnerable only to projectiles, but you won't be able to perform any of the previously listed tasks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [MENUS] Menus This section describes the options available in different screens of the game. Mainly to aid players of the Japanese import version. -Title Menu --New Game (start a new game from scratch) --Continue Game (load one of up to 3 previous saved games) --Free Battle (play non-storyline missions on maps unlocked in the main game) --DS to DS (play against a friend who also has the game) --Wifi ---Wifi Settings (takes you to the DS Firmware Wifi Settings options) ---Wifi Ranking (connects you to the Wifi network) ----Notices (shows latest notices posted by Square Enix) ----Maps Available (free battle missions available this week) ----Top Scores (view the best players scores) ----Rewards (items unlocked with your current point total for Wifi) -Buttons on World Map screen (left to right) --Continue to next Chapter/Mission --Character Roster (use to equip main characters with items) ---Character sprite (select character for play when pre-mission) ---Speech Bubble (view character stats and equipment summary) ---Equip (change the character's equipment) ----Side bar: Sort by (New, Numerical, +HP first, +ATK first, +SPD first, +Range first) ----Top bar: Necklace, Gauntlet, Ring, Elemental Spirit --Notebook ---Chapter summaries and rankings for missions ---Character profiles ---Key words, events ---MOB list --Options ---Game Help (tutorials used in game) ---Settings ----Screen scrolling speed ----Sound effects volume ----BGM volume ----Stereo or mono (default is stereo) ---Savegames (view latest chapter info and save current game to slot) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [RANK] Ranking Your ranking is based on several factors, and can be reviewed in the Encyclopedia in-game. Also, the higher rank you achieve in a mission, the better the reward you will receive for completing the chapter. The factors taken into account are: -Clear Time: 20p Max -Friendly Units Spawned: 10p Max -Enemy Units Defeated: 20p Max -Friendly Units Lost: 20p Max -Gaia Stones Harvested: 10p Max -Treant Fruit Harvested: 10p Max -Map Uncovered: 10p Max -Damage to Ship: 20p Max Platinum S Rank: 100-120 points Gold A Rank: 80-99 points Silver B Rank: 70-79 points Bronze C Rank: 60-69 points D Rank: 59-50 points E Rank: 49 points or less Also in the case of maps where certain statistics don't apply the maximum score is given by default (ie. a map where you are given a set number of units, your friendly unit spawning points will be maxed out even though you didn't spawn any units). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [CHAR-MAIN] Main Characters Each playable Hero character has a Battle Skill and a Waiting Skill. The Battle Skill will have an effect on units that are within 5 squares of the Hero, increasing certain stats or abilities. Waiting skills apply modifiers to the proprties of the Nightswan Ship by increasing its speed or reducing construction costs or times, but ONLY when the character is NOT on the battlefield. This section compiles together both playable and non-playable characters, with a brief summary of their background, and in the case of playable characters, their base statistics, skills, and starting equipment if applicable. 01. The main stats increased are Attack Power, Speed, and Attack Range. Some may also boost one stat and create a new handicap, and some items will also give an additional power (like increasing defense to a particular unit type). To equip an item, you must do so between levels by going to the Character Equipment screen on the World Map view (second button on the bottom of the screen). You may only equip on of each type (Neck, Arm, Finger) and no two characters can share an item even if they aren't on the battle field at the same time. An elemental can only be assigned to one main character at a time, and the spell available for that elemental will vary depending on the character chosen. To cast use an elemental spell during a mission, select only the character that you want to cast the spell by tapping on them (not encircling) and press the blue button below their character stats on the right hand side of the bottom screen. This button will not be available while the character is carrying out an action (attacking the enemy physically). Saber type spells will cast upon your own Leader Unit, and will generally cause your attacks to inflict a particular status ailment upon the enemy a certain percentage of the time, or in Luna's case to absorb HP while attacking. They have very little attack or defense power. Have the terrible tendency to go galavanting off into enemy territory trying to find an alternate route to the resources you pointed them to. -Ground Units Basic attack units for melee combat. Weak against Heavy, strong against Missile. -Heavy Units Heavy attack units for melee combat. Weak against Flying units, strong against Ground. -Flying Units Units that melee attack from the air, or at most from a short distance, and are weak to projectiles. Weak against Missile, strong against Heavy. -Missile units Units that can attack from some distance, but are vulnerable to melee. Weak against Ground, strong against Flying. -Special units Units that have a special ability (such as stealth or unit spawning). They are generally not weak to any particular kind of attack. Often the more costly units to spawn. As you can see, there is a closed weakness diamond created by the main battle units which is very handy to keep in mind when you want superiority over a particular group of MOBs. Units that are weak against another kind will only inflict half the damage on that unit type, and receive double from it. So, for example, an Missile Unit will inflict double damage on an Flying unit, while the Flying unit's attacks will be halved against the Missile Unit, but a Heavy Unit unit will inflict double the damage on the Archer when all its attacks in return are halved. Effectively, you make your units 4 times more powerful when you send them against the right type of MOBs. The other modifier for the units is the terrain they can handle. -Terrestrial units can only handle basic terrain, and little in the way of steps. -Saltatory units can handle moderate changes in terrain height. -Aquatic units can travel over water, and do so faster than travelling on land. -Aerial units can travel pretty much anywhere they please. Herein follows a list of the MOB units in the game. At present, some of the names are incomplete, the special abilities of the MOBs are not listed, and a few notes here and there are left from my original draft. These will get ironed out slowly over the course of the next few updates, and even more so once the US release hits. Also, where there are two sets of numbers for a same property for the same unit, the second number is the value for the game in Hard Mode (ie. the HP for 42. I have started off with Chapter 26 because this one is not as straight forward as many other Chapters, and I wrote it up first as I thought people might have a spot of trouble with it. Other chapters will follow this format. [CHAP01] Night Raid We start abroad the Nightswan, an aerial ship of the Peddan Kingdom, on our way from Peddan to carry out a recconnaisance in the Beast Kingdom. Our main characters, Roget, Yurchael, Qucas, Gemière and D'Kelli, exchange thoughts on the mission ahead. However, not all is going smoothly. Ahead of them, ships from the Beast Kingdom begin to open fire, and they are forced to retreat into the Nightswan and dettach from the main blimp. They crash land in the Duskmoon Forest, making for a really bad start to the day really. You are now given the chance to Save your game. After that, we are taken to the world map. Unlocked Players: Roget, Yurchael Unlocked Bios: 01-05 Unlocked keywords: 01-12 Unlocked MOBs: None Unlocked buildings: Gatherer Unit Base, Ground Unit Base (during Walk2) Continue: [CHAP02] Forest of Beasts [WALK02] Mission 02 Location: Duskmoon Forest Number of Main Characters: 2 Starting Mineral: 2 Starting Fruit: 2 Hidden Item Locations: -1. 1sq South of Gaia -2. 1sq South of Treant -3. 1sq West of the tree to the North-East of the Treant, on top of the hill This is the bog-standard learning level, so don't expect any great excitement just yet. We need to collect some materials to get the Nightswan back up and running like it should be, and learn the basics of the game from Yurchael, your captain. After some talking, your top screen will display a very basic map, and you will receive the tutorial for how to select and move your character. Once back to the game area, tap on Roget, and move him toward the east. He'll come across a Gaia rock formation, and the gameplay will pause to give you the next explanation about unveiling terrain and field of vision, commonly known in RTS games as Fog of War. You will then also be given a step by step DIY course on creating your first Unit Base. Follow the directions and tap where the white- gloved hands tell you to see on board the Nightswan, create a Gatherer Unit Base, and click back out of the Nightsawn screen. Yurchael will continue his explanation, and then you will be guided again through a process similar to the one before, but this time you'll be creating a Rabite via your Gatherer Unit Base. You can only create one during this tutorial, but I recommend you go back in and create 5 of these units (or more, they're free after all). While those are spawning, select your first Rabite and send him over to the Gaia by clicking on it. This will make him start collecting Stones from the rock formation and taking them back to the Nightswan. Once the first stone is taken back, Yurchael will continue his explanation, then leave you to your own devices to continue harvesting. I recommend taking one or two rabites and using them to explore the edges of the map, as you'll uncover hidden items this way. There should be a couple North of the Nightswan. Take the rest further forward to reveal a Treant tree, and receive some more advice from Yurchael, then use these rabites to collect Treant Fruit and take it back to the Nightswan. Again, once the first one is back, a tutorial will display explaining the collection of resources. Once this is over, keep harvesting and take Roget toward the North-East corner of the map, where a Beast Soldier will be revealed in the bewilderness with a baffld look on his face, wondering what in the Goddess' name you're up to. Another tutorial displays regarding Unit HP, and what the little icons at the bottom of your screen represent. Remember, the further in the red, the more trouble your unit is in. Also this will explain switching to Unit Type list, so you can select all units of a specific type at once. We are now given some victory and loss conditions. Normally these are given at the beginning of a chapter, and sometimes updated as events progress, for future reference in upcoming chapters. Victory Conditions: -Defeat the Beast Soldier Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Yurchael must not die Mission Start! Yeah boyyyyyyy! Anyway, you want to make sure you bleed the resources dry in the level with your Rabites while sending Roget after the Beast Soldier, so assign them the task of doing so while you take out wolf-face. He can easily take him on and out in a matter of seconds. Once he's down, Yurchael will take you through another DIY session to create the Ground Unit Base, and a Ground Unit, the Myconid/Mushboom. Once this is over, go back in and create a further 9 of them (because you've got the resources to spare), and bring Roget back toward the Nightswan. After a while, more Beast Soldiers will appear on the scene and aren't too pleased at you. You'll get a new set of Mission Objectives. Victory Conditions: -Defeat all enemies Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Yurchael must not die Mission Start! Off we go again. Grab all your Ground Units and swarm them after the Beast Soldiers fast as you can. Take one to the South-East corner of the map while you're at it too, there should be a hidden item there. The Beast Soldiers should go down with no difficulties, and if you're taking two Mushboom per Beast, you shouldn't lose any units either. Once down, another tutorial explaining the flow of resources will display (also noting the important fact that a max of 25 MOBs can be in play at any one time). After this, you should receive... Mission Complete! Now you will see your ranking, and understand why it was so important to bleed resources dry, create as many units as possible, and do it quick. Also remember that the better your ranking, the better the reward you get for the mission. The rejoicing is short lived, as two ships from the Beast Kingdom will descend on the scene, bringing with them a troop of Beast Soldiers and the King of the Beast Kingdom, Gauser. It doesn't seem to be their day either, since while exchanging heated words, another ship appears on the scene, guns ablazing, and then heads for the Beast King's castle. This causes a quick retreat on behalf of the Beast platoon and their King, leaving you to try and figure out what on earth Peddan is really up to. Time to save! Again... [CHAP03] Lowenburg Falls As you approach the Beast Kingdom Castle you spot the Peddan military attacking, which is quite the surprise considering you were only supposed to be on recconnaisance. Either way, you make your way there to join the main unit. You land and walk up to 3 Peddan Soldiers standing guard and try to convince them you're on their side. Unfortunatly they don't believe you're on a Top Secret mission since they haven't heard of anything remotely along those lines (obviously the words Top Secret didn't give them a hint as to WHY they hadn't heard of it), and are goin to carry out their orders to kill anyone who's not part of the Peddan Army... and that includes you! [WALK03] Mission 03 Location: Vicinity of the Beast Kingdom Castle Number of Main Characters: 3 Starting Mineral: 2 Starting Fruit: 2 Victory Conditions: -Get Roget to the entrance to the Beast King's Castle Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Review the skills they have to offer, equip them with items if you haven't already, and hit the button when you're ready to go into battle. Roget is compulsory (as he always is), then I'd suggest Qucas and maybe D'Kelli. You start out with the three Peddan Soldiers right in front of you, and your ship anchored at the Southern edge of the level. First thing's first, take those soldiers down quickly. While your heroes are taking thsee guys out, make some progress by building the Gatherer Unit Base and a few Rabites. Once the soldiers are down, you'll get a tutorial on Group Selecting using the stylus, and also on moving the map and rotating it. Get your Rabites after some Gaia Stones and Treant Fruit, and take two of your main characters over to the East edge of the map and North until they reach the bridge. Another pause for a Tutorial on the Balance of Power between different Unit Types. Take out the Chobin Hood on your side of the bridge, and meanwhile build the Ground Unit Base and 4 Mushbooms ('cause that's all your resources will allow). Take them toward the bridge. By this point, you should have collected all the resources there were to collect. While they're heading in that direction, select the Nightswan by tapping on it, and then tap near the beginning of the bridge. The game will prompt you as to whether you want to unanchor the vessel, so confirm this and it will start making a move. Once your Mushboom are assembled, take them across the bridge and take down with ease the 4 Chobin Hood there. Once that's done, they'll spot a Cobra and another explanation on the Balance of Power will ensue (because this guy's a Ground Unit and is weak to Heavy Units). You'll now have unlocked the ability to build the Heavy Unit Base. Set the Mushbooms after him, and bring the Nightswan across the bridge. At the same time, tell all your Rabites to head for the bridge too, since we'll need them to sap more resources. At the other side of the bridge will be an anchor point, which will spark another Tutorial. Set the Nightswan to anchor and take the Mushbooms forward to get rid of two more Cobra. Set your Rabite on the Treant that is just west of the anchor point, and once the Nightswan is anchored build the Heavy Unit Base. Start creating Heavy Units and sending them west to take on a couple more Cobra as they appear, and also a Catapult unit at the entrance of the castle. Once you'v almost taken down the catapult, bring your main characters forward, and prepare to take your Ground Units to the Northern edge of the level. When the catapult goes down, another tutorial on Unique Units will display, and a few seconds later, more Peddan Soldiers will appear at the northern edge. But we're ready for them, so take them down with ease using your Mushbooms, since they are Missile Units. You may want to reinforce with your Heavy Units once they're free. As they're about to go down, get Roget to the entrance of the Castle, and the Mission will Complete. Gauser lands with his crew and are greeted by a Peddan Soldier hard at his work of directing his men to set the village alight and generally be rather nasty toward the beastmen. Swing to the other side of the village, you anre your crew have now entered the scene, and aren't best pleased with how things are looking either. The Peddan Army start forcing civilians to evacuate their homes and give them a nice wallop as they try to flee. You start with the whole map available for you to view. You're in the south- west corner, the village is to your north, and Gowzer and his troop are over to the east of the village. You also have a little dettachment to your east to deal with, and some resources not too far away. You'll also have 2 Chobbin Hood/Poron with you to help you out somewhat. Mission Start! The dettachment to your east will start heading your way, and general chaos will ensue in the village. Start by taking your Chobin Hood/Poron up to the border of the village and have them sling some shots at the enemy there. Meanwhile, set your heroes after the small dettachment and build Gatherer and Ground Unit Bases. Set about spawning 5 Rabites, and put them to work on the Treant. (One of your units should find an item to the west of your ship when it spawns.) Another tutorial will interrupt the action, explaining what the Healing House is now available to you. It'll gradually heal units that are within 5 squares of the Nightswan. You'll also get another tutorial when you attack the Spectre, explaining again about the Balance of Power. Now, continue with your main characters to the south-east corner to reveal a hidden item, and start spawning Mushbooms as fast as you can make them, and send them after the group of archers that are at the entrance of the village. Also keep an eye on your Rabites, so that when the Treant runs out you send them after the Gaia (not because you need it, but because it will give you an extra 10p toward your ranking at the end). As your mini-swarm of Mushbooms (you should be able to get 5 out, then another five while they attack) take on the archers and wipe them out, move your main characters up behind the Eagle Ship to reveal another item, then prepare to take them to the village entrance. Once your Mushy friends have taken down the archers, the other 5 should be close behind. Tell them all to head for the Archers in the northen part of the village, and stop to take out any that may be left by the Beastmen on the way (most should have fallen by now, which is unfortunate seeing as this counts against you point-wise). Once all the archers are down, all that remains is the leader in the north-west corner. He may take down a unit or two from your room- platoon, but there's no point in wasting time to create the Heavy Units required to take him down any quicker, and you'll only waste more time doing this. He should be the last unit to go down, so once he's finished, Mission Complete. Give yourself a pat on the back for saving the pack. [CHAP05] Reunion You arrive at Laurent and gain an audience with Queen Garura of Laurent. In her court stand also to her right Minerva, and her two head soldiers, Aruma (blue hair) and Joster (red helmet). After giving the queen your message, you wait outside. Aruma appears, and it seems that there is some past between her and Qucas. Joster and Minerva, who strangeley resembles Riesz from Seiken Densetsu 3, show up also. More past is unearthed between them and Qucas. Our maincharacters return to the Nightswan and leave, only to then see Laurent attacked by Ms. Bazzy's forces. The Nightswan flies over the castle and Qucas jumps out to inform Aruma and Joster of the predicament. Aruma is surrounded by two Pedan soldiers, which she takes down with ease, as if to suggest she doesn't need his help, but more and more soldiers keep appearing. Time to fight. [WALK05] Mission 05 Location: Laurent Castle Victory Conditions: -Defeat all enemies Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Aruma must not die -Joster must not die Number of Main Characters: 4 (Roget and Qucas required) Starting Mineral: 1 Starting Fruit: 2 Hidden Item Locations: -1. 1sq South of nearest Gaia -2. 1sq West of the East-most Treant -3. 5-6sq South of the North-West corner of the map, near the precipice Choose two more characters aside from Roget and Qucas (since they are required by default). I went for Gauser and Gemiere, personally. First thing's first, quickly get a Gatherer House up and producing 5 Rabites. While that's going on, send two of your characters to help Joster out outside the castle and one up to the battlements where two Laurent soldiers are about to be attacked. Make sure that Qucas actually helps Aruma out, since he has a habit of standing there doing nothing. Once you given them their orders, you should have a couple of Rabites ready at least, so send these after some Gaia Stones. They should also pick up the first hidden treasure. Build the Missile Unit Base with the stones collected. Send two of your main characters to each of the northern corners to sit out the battle for now, they'll come in useful later. If you get the chance, send one near the Treant on the way East to collect a hidden treasure, and get one of the western ones to explore near the precipice for the same reason. Now move the Nightswan out of the castle to the anchor point to the south of Joster, and send the Rabites out of the castle and to the outside of the western tower. They will find a Treant just west of the hook there, so send them to collect all the fruit there and bring it back to the newly positioned Nightswan. Meanwhile, spawn two Chobins, and then another 2 once you have enough fruit. It's around about this time that another ship will come in to play and head for the Castle. Send 2 chobins due west to stand next to a Gaia there, and keep two near the Treant just south of your mooring point. This should kill off these fou spectres quite easily. If one gets by, it'll be tackled by Joster. Once these are out of the way, send 2 or 3 Rabites after the Gaia Stones to the west, and a couple more to the nearest Treant. Now build the Heavy Unit House and spawn as many Puchiguranshie as you can (11-12 should be enough). Start sending these so that you end up with 2 at the middle of the map at the west and east-most borders, and 3-4 accompanying each of the main character groups we created before at the Northern corners. Meanwhile, manage your Rabites so they make swift pickings of the remaining Gaia and Treant on the level. Once you have your Puchiguranshie in place, send your Chobins to the southern-most point both to explore the rest of the map and take out two remaining Spectres. When these go down, you'll understand the groups we made before with the main characters and the Puchiguranshie. 4 Nevarl soldiers will appear in each Northern corner, and two at each mid section East and West. Qucas leaves Joster and Aruma to deal with things outside, while he runs in to find Queen Garura falling to the forces of Nevarl, led by Olbex. As they're about to take Minerva, our heroes arrive. Outside things aren't looking good either. As the forces of Laurent fall slowly, the Dark Mirror appears and engulfs the castle in darkness. Aruma and Joster run to the throne room. In the confusion, Minerva manages to free herself from her Nevarl captors and threatens Olbex. Sadly, it is no good. Laurent is now under the control of Nevarl forces, and our heroes must leave. Lower plato of the two-tiered hill near the North-East corner For this mission your best bets to take with Roget are Qucas and Gauser. You'll be starting off on the western border of the map. There's a small gang of Nevarl troops just east of your position, guarding the Gaia stones there and a Treant just north of that. First this to do is set a Harvesting Unit House on the way and summon 6 Rabites. Meanwhile, take your main characters east and take out the Nevarl troops, so we can then safely send 3 Rabites to the Gaia, 3 to the Treant. This last batch should uncover a hidden item just north of the Treant. There are no more enemies to worry about just yet, so we can focus on getting our stocks up and ready for later in the level. Once 4 stones have been collected, build the Healing Home, and keep an eye on the Rabites collecting the fruit from Treant. It'll run out after a short while, and once it does you're best to get them ready for the next stage, so bring them just east of the Gaia. When this also has run out, move the Nightswan, the Rabites and your main characters just east of the centre of the level, and you'll discover the missing Nevarl Troop, including Falcon and Sand Arrow. Our Mission conditions have now changed. Victory Conditions: -Defeat all enemies Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Falcon must not die. -Sand Arrow must not die. Now, get the Nightswan anchored and send 3 Rabites North-East of the Nevarl troops to collect the Treant fruit there (and also uncover another hidden item), and send another 3 due South to do the same (minus item). You need to do this quick, as the scene will not remain quiet for long. A few small groups of troops will start to emerge from north, but they shouldn't be too hard to take down. Plus you have the Healing Home, so you can take some damage without fear. It's not over yet though. Build a Ground and Heavy Unit Unit Home and crank out 9 puchigurnsie and 8 Mushbooms. Send a group of 3 of each to the South-East corner of the map, a group of two of each to the North border of the map near the western corner, and another group of 2 of each to the South-West corner of the map. Finally, send the remaining Mushboom and 2 Puchiguranshie directly south where the Treant was. As you get your troops in to place, it may be an idea to use one or two of your unoccuppied Rabites to explore some of the untouched areas of the map, EXCEPT the border directly east of the Nightswan, since there are two troops and a vehicle. There's another hidden item in the north-east corner, at the top of the little hill. Now the fun begins. Hopefully you've got all your troops nicely positioned, so when the reinforcements turn up, you're already out-numbering them considerably. Your main problem is going to be the south-east corner, since it's quite a tight spot, and troops can get stuck doing nothing but getting quite the spanking from the enemy troops. At the same time, take your three main characters directly east to make easy work of the vehicle and two troops that have been patiently waiting there for quite some time now. Victory is yours once again. Flame Kahn, leader of the Nevarl forces, turns up with a whole slew of cronies. Not only that, he's Falcon's father. Maybe she's not supposed to be out this late. He then leaves. Yuhani, a childhood friend of Roget's, waits at the other side of the bridge there, and he doesn't look too friendly either. After some exchanges, he orders troops to go after you. Now most of your enemies here are going to be Heavy Units. Quite luckily, we now have available to us the Flying Unit Base, as well as the Fire God-Beast Altar. From your starting point you will find two Gaia resources, one directly West, one directly East. Each is guarded by 1 and 3 minor units respectively, so while your building your Harvesting Unit Base and about 5 Rabites, take these out with your main characters. The eastern guards will come down the small passageway, so don't take your main characters any further east than that, as they may slip through and attack your ship. Make sure you get the hidden item west of the western Gaia. While your Rabites finish picking off the Gaia stones, take your main characters north of the passage and reveal an anchoring point. Once the Gaia has been collected, we'll move the Nightswan here and send the Rabites after the nearby Treant. Now build the Healing Home and the Flying Unit Base, and start summoning 10 Needlebirds. Get them ready at the bottom of the bridge, but line them up so that once the Rabites have finished with the Treant near the Nightswan you can send them after the newly discovered one. Once you've finished harvesting, arrange your Needlebirds so that they are ready to attack the western 4 squares above the Treant, with Qucas and Alma behind them. Then, take 5 Needlebirds across the bridge with Roget, and the fun will begin. Once they reach just past the centre of the bridge, Pedan troops will appear at the West Treant and at the top of the bridge. Backed-up with your Main Characters, they should make mince of them in no time. While this is going on, take the Nightswan across the precipice directly north of its current position, where you'll find another anchor. Breed a new set of Rabites to harvest the Treant here. There are also two hidden items here, one west of the Treant, another 3 squares west of that. While harvesting, breed 4 or 5 Needlebirds more, and take them to the northern border of the map to take out some units hiding up there. Back at the battle, once the Needlebirds have made quick work of the troops, start taking them across the bridge with your main characters, wiping out units on the way. When it comes to Yuhani, go at him with your Main Characters, as the Needlebirds will have little effect on him. It's important that you try to get as many troops defeated before Yuhani as you can, because once he goes down, that's the end of the mission. Heartless? Me? Anyway, we need to head out and find the missing Valseng troops, so let's set to it. [WALK08] Mission 08 Location: Grassy Plains of Valseng Victory Conditions: -Search for the Valseng troops Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. Number of Main Characters: 4 (Roget required) Starting Mineral: 1 Starting Fruit: 5 Hidden Item Locations: -1. 1sq South of the nearest Gaia from the start -2. 1sq North of the nearest Treant, in the water (needs Aquatic unit) -3. Middle of the river, about a 5th down from the North (needs Aquatic unit) For this one I recommend Qucas, Gemiere and Falcon, because we'll need some Missile back-up, as well as fast flying. First thing to do, yes, you guessed it, build the Harvesting Unit Base, and crank out 5 Rabites and one Pukkun Baby. While they're making an appearance, send your main characters over the bridge just east of your current position and take out the three enemy units there. Once that's done, send 2 rabites and the Pakkun after the Treant there, making sure you check the square just north of it for a hidden item with the Pakkun Baby. Send the remaining 3 rabites after the Gaia north-east of your position, taking another hidden item from the square south of it. Once these are collected, take the Nightswan and all your troops due East, then a few squares North of the Treant there to find a new anchoring point. Start harvesting away at the new Treant and build the Healing Home, Heavy and Missile Unit Bases. Once this is done, use your charater units to take out the Chibi Devils on the bridge heading north-west from the anchor point, coming back to the Nightswan if things are looking grim. Now, summon a good number of Puchiguranshie (I'd say 4 should be enough) and Sahagin (another 4 should do) and head up with everything over the bridge, with the Nightswan and Gatherers tailing not too far behind. Once the Richard and the Valseng troops are revealed, enemy units will appear and new Mission objectives will be given. Victory Conditions: -Defeat all enemies Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Richard must not die Send your Sahagin after the Spectres while the Puchiguranshie make quick work of the ground troops, and anchor the Nightswan while the battle rages. Get harvesting again, and prepare as many Sahagin as you can, 'cause it's going to get nasty. The moment all the enemies go down, Celestan will show up in the north-easter corner of the map, and show what he has waiting for you. Yes, Red Dragons! Except they're not on your side. Oh dear! This is what we want the Sahagin's for. Victory Conditions: -Defeat Celestan Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Richard must not die Keep summoning them like mad, and take them to the edge of the bridge to the east, together with Falcon to reinforce them, and Qucas if possible. Have your Gatherers start chewing their way through the Gaia, and if you get the chance send the Pakku Baby off up the river to find a hidden item in the middle of the water. Now after a while, more dragons and Spectres will appear from the east and north and start closing in. At this point we will also have the advantage of being given 19 Gaia Stones by Richard, which we should immediately put to use by making a Fire God-Beast Altar, and setting it off when we start engaging the dragons. This will make sure that they suffer a bit of a dazzle, as well as receive some hefty damage, so we can get through them quickly with the Sahagin. You should also find that while all this is going on, your Gatherers will pick up enough stones to build a second altar, so we can inflict even more unfair damage. Once all the dragons go down, we'll take the rest of our character units after Celestan, who should be quite weak by this point. He'll be waiting across the bridge, trying to take out our forces one by one. Take him out, and victory is yours. Note that sometimes Celestan will make his way over and start attacking from the front-line, taking out numerous troops on the way, so keep an eye out for him amidst the madness. We have to move fast here so we can get things ready for the impending assault. First off, get your Harvesting Base and 6 Rabites out, then send them West and South through the archway. Send three after the Treant and the rest after the Gaia there in the courtyard. Turns out the enemy has brought a carrier, the Gulbatte, along with them, so now your objective is to sink it. Get building the Ground and Bow Unit Bases, and the Healing Home, and summon three of each of your most powerful units. Send them to the South West corner of the level, where the opening in the outer wall is. Valda and her soldier should be capable to dealing with one dragon. When the courthyard resources are exhausted, send your Rabites up the ramp to the east, south, and then east out on to the battlements to find another Treant (Hidden Item just south of it). Move the Nightswan to the anchor near this, and start summonning more Sahagins. At around this point, Celestan will make an appearance. With your units in the South West corner you should be able to take him out, and also take out the next Red Dragon that'll go after your nightswan with the Sahagins. When the collection has finished, move the Nightswan South out of the castle, and east between the two sets of walls surrounding it until you get to an anchoring point near, but not at, the south eastern corner. Start making quick work of the Gaia and Treant here (Item to the East of it). Congregate your units here for the final showdown, coming soon, and create the Heavy Unit Base, together with some Du'Cate. Send a Ground Unit directly north of this current position to encounter a lone Archer, then go further north and take it behind the lonely bush there to find another hidden item. As if we hadn't had enough visitors already, our old friend Olbex makes an appearance with two Nevarlan soldiers. Your leaders will be able to take down these guys in no time. All that's left then is the carrier. Careful though, because it'll be churning out Ground Units like there's no tomorrow. Hence the Du'Cate. [WALK10] Mission 10 Location: Castle Altena Victory Conditions: -Destroy all enemy units Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. About 1 3rd down the level, 4-5 squares in from the West (hill in the snow) For this one I recommend Loki and Qucas (isn't he a useful chappy?) Now this tactic is going to go completely against what one would logically do. We're going to start the battle by taking all our leader units North to the castle entrance, as well as moving the Nightswan to the anchoring point there. Before moving your leader units however, you may want to send one to the square immediatly East of the Gaia just to the south-west of your starting point to pick up an item there, then send them back with the rest of the units already heading for the rendezvous. Now we're relocated, we'll start with the usual process. Get 10 rabites up and running, 5 for the nearby Treant, 5 for the Gaia to the South near the frozen enemies. There is an item in the square immediately south of the Gaia which they should pick up. Now use these resources to create the Heavy Unit Base and 10 Du'Cate at least, since by that point battle will be imminent. You'll need to switch your Rabites to another berry source in the middle of this, so set them going back into the castle to pick the berries from there. It'll get quite chaotic quickly in this little space, so make sure you keep rallying the Du'Cate away from the Nightswan to stop blockage. There is a third item that is hard to describe the location for. There is a small ridge about one third of the way down the level along the western side in the snow. It is the square diagonally south-west by one from this ridge. It lines up horizontally the second Treant down inside the Castle, if that's any help. Once your ten are ready, stake them and your leaders (maybe minus Roget, to be on the safe side) and start reducing the enemy numbers. It's about this time that Baxilios will show up, wondering what is taking so long. She'll thaw out the enemy troops, and this is where the real fun begins. All hell breaks loose. Victory Conditions: -Defeat Baxilios Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Richard AND Valda must not die -Enemy must not break through the castle gates This can get messy, because Baxilios is a rather nasty piece of work at times. Keep hacking away at the troops, making sure that they don't stray too far from where they're supposed to, and you should have no trouble at all taking them all down together with Baxilios (you'll want to try taking her down last to get the most points possible for enemy defeats). The battle should go smoothly, meaning Mission Accomplished once Baxilios bites the snow. We're about to get rushed by Celestan and Dragons, so quickly get 10 Rabites and 4 Sahagins out and ready. 5 Rabites for the Treant just north of your position (Item 1sq to the North of it), 5 for the Gaia north west. You won't have time to spare. First dragon will come from the South, another from the North (but will stop at the Treant most likely), then another from the East. Wait for them to come to your vicinity, then hammer dowm down one by one. Don't rush headlong into them too far, as you may find yourself down by a leader in no time. Very shortly afterward, Celestan himself and two more dragons show up, so get some more Sahagin out and ready. It'll be a tough fight, and Richard can get a bit too involved, but you should see it through in no time. Now once your rabites are done with the nearby resources, send 5 further north to collect more berries there, and then 5 to the east of the Nightswan to do the same again (item 1 sq west of Treant). Create the Healing Home and Flying Unit Base. We're going to want to start creating pleanty of Needlebirds, as well as healing our injured troops. The third hidden item is again hard to explain. It is directly west of the Gaia, and 2 squares north along the edge of the map, somewhere in the water. Send a spare Sahagin along there while you're gathering resources. Don't let your guard down. Chances are the enemy will start sending Heavy units your direction, which is why we've been creating Flying Units. You shouldn't suffer any great losses, especially as you have the Healing home. Now soon enough you'll see the Enemy Ship make a move East because its resources are running out. At this point, send one or two troops to the south- west corner to reveal the last of the map, and send the rest to the South-East corner to take out the troops that the enemy produces, and eventually the ship itself. Piece of cake. As you take out the Gulbatte, Celestan declares that all is lost for you, and summons 4 more dragon to attack your leaders. Yurchael becomes rather pessimistic. But now Valda snaps out of it at last and unleashes unholy wrath against the dragons in the form of the fire of a rather irrate Altenish witch. Take 5 of your Rabites east of the Nightswan to collect a Treant there, and the remainder of gatherers to the Gaia we freed. Use a Tonpole at some point to explore the water under the bridge where there is a hidden item just outside the tunnel in the wall). Then, take it east of the steps, where you will find another entrance to another body of water. Go across here, and search the square directly west of the Gaia here. While the gathering is in full flow, build the Healing Home, Ground, Heavy, and Missile Unit bases. Once you've finished collecting the resources here, move the Nightswan North of the Gaia to the anchor point there, and start collecting the Treant to the East and North of that position. You'd do well to move the Nightswan to the Anchor point between the bodies of water. Once the attack begins, it's going to get nasty. Keep your leader and missile units South of the central Treant, on the stairs, and you should avoid at least some attacks, while being healed by the Nightswan. Get your Tonpoles collecting the Gaia the other side of the river, and the Rabites collecting the Treant on the West side of the map (if it's free of enemies... there's also a hidden item 1 sq North of it). You'll want to summon new units next to the Nightswan also, mainly Heavy, since there will be a couple of attacks from the south. Once the main barrage is over, you'll have a steady annoyance from the units produced by the Guldrea, but this shouldn't prove hard to deal with. Use this time to replenish your units and prepare for the confrontation with Inath. Back to Wendel we go to see the Wizard of Oz, and set our next heading for the Woods of Wandara, after which we'll head for the Labirynth of Ice in Altena. [CHAP13] Have-nots Unforgiving I hate the music here... Anyway, this time, it's the Nevarlans who are after us, or more specifically Ladyhawke, I mean, Falcon. It seems that Flamekahn holds a grudge quite nicely, so we're going to have to deal with them before finding the next stone. Joy of joys. [WALK13] Mission 13 Location: Woods of Wandara Victory Conditions: -Destroy all Stealth Burrows Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Falcon must not die. Qucas, Alma and Gemiere The start of this level requires you to move quickly from one place to another. First off, take Gemiere and Falcon after the Stealth Burrow that is just to the South of your starting position, while taking the rest of you characters South through the passage along the West side of the level to go after the next one. After you have given these first orders, build your Gatherer Base and summon 5 Rabites. Also build the Heavy Unit Base. Once your three characters are through the passage, head east to find a Gaia and the second Stealth Burrow for the taking. Make quick work of it, it should go down easily. Send 3 Rabites after the Treant to the East of your starting point (item 1sq to the South of it), and two after the Gaia that is through the passage to get the Gaia from there. Summon up 2 Flying Units now, and send them to the East of the Nightswan, to the Treant, then South up the hill. They'll find an item at the top of the hill, then send them East to take out a Burrow there. By the time you start giving these orders, your Leader Units will have finished off the first two burrows. Take them toward the South-West corner of the map, then head East until you find another Burrow about mid-level. Head further East once this is taken care of (your Flying Units should be taking on the Burrow you told them to), then North at the anchor-point, so you'll end up in the same clearing practically. You'll have to take out a Scorpion first, and I'd recommend sending one character due-South of the anchor-point to find the hidden item 1sq North of the Gaia there). There will be a couple more Nevarlans there to take down, then another Burrow just East of them. Use your Flying Units to ward off any stray Heavy Units that may have appeared in the interim. When this one goes down, Flamekahn will make an appearance, and our objective will change. Victory Conditions: -Defeat Flamekahn Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Falcon must not die. This is very simple. Unite your Leader Units at the anchor-point we passed toward the South East of the level, and Flamekahn will come toward you to meet you at the pass. Surround him and concentrate all fire on him, and he'll keel in no time. If you've looked after your HP, you'll be singing victory easily. Mission Complete! While searching for the stone in the cold maze, a sneeze gives away Celestan's presence, who has been waiting for us. He's puzzled as to how Yurchael got involved in this mess, but no matter; he's far too happy that we can't summon Units (the Nightswan couldn't enter the maze) to care. [WALK14] Mission 14 Location: Labyrinth of Ice Victory Conditions: -Defeat Celestan Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. -Yurchael must not die. Number of Main Characters: 5 (Roget and Yurchael required) Starting Mineral: 0 Starting Fruit: 0 Hidden Item Locations: -1. 1sq South of nearest Mana Statue -2. 2sq SouthWest of the North-East corner of the map -3. 1sq North of the South-Eastern Mana Statue Recommended characters are Falcon, Qucas and Valda. Before we start, there's a new element on the map: The Mana Goddess Statue. You can use these to recover HP gradually, like the Nightswan with the Healing Home. See, we're not entirely lost! Right, you can tell from the music this is going to be nasty. Take Falcon and your Missile Units along the North edge of the map toward the North East corner, where you get the enjoy the fun task of taking out a dragon and several flying kakodemons. While they're on their way there, take Valda and Yurchael to where your Heavy Units are (the Silkspitters), past the statue near your starting position (item 1sq South of it). Then take them East to take down a Peddan soldier there and some seahorses which will be summoned along the South edge of the map after he goes down. Return to the Statue to heal, while you bring the Pincer Crabs, Roget and Qucas up in front of you. Back to Falcon and the Duck GIs, they should be in place to take on the Dragon. The moment you hit him with a critical hit from one of your Duck GIs (reason we have Falcon here), he should start to burn, meaning he won't be likely to attack you much before he goes down. Piece of cake! Now take care of the kakodemons, most of which will go down without a chance to attack, and heal at the Statue to the South. Send one of your troops to where the kakodemos appeared from to search for a hidden item (about 3sq West and 2 South of the top corner). Now this part is awkward. Take Falcon and the GIs across the East edge of the map, then West along the passage that we want to bring the rest of our troops down. Just ignore the Missile Peddan soldiers, and stay out of their range. About halfway along, another dragon should appear. Now if we'd tried to bring along our army, they would have been rather badly injured, so it's worth it. Once he's done with, move along safely, and recover at the Mana Statue if needed. Then leave your Pincer Crabs by the East edge of the map at the middle, and take out the two Missile Unit Peddan soldiers. This will make some skeletons appear that can be easily dealt with by the Pincers. All that's left now is a final move on Celestan. Well, and two more Red Dragons. Venture toward the centre of the map first with your Duck Gis and Falcon to take out the Dragons which will be lured out (while the rest of your units recover at the Mana Statue near the South West... there's a hidden item 1sq North of her too), then bring them back and send in your SilkSpitters after Celestan, backed by your Duck GIs and Qucas. He'll try to get out toward Roget and Yurchael, so keep his way blocked by pleanty of units, and he'll soon be regretting skipping breakfast. Mission Complete! [CHAP15] Battle over the Holy Capital Baxilios now has control over all the major world powers, except Wendel, the last remaining city. Our heroes and the Priest of Light run around sheltering people and preparing the city for the Vel Vimana to sink under their attack. Valda explains that there is a warp cannon on the Luzio Malis, which may give the upper hand, but requires 20 Gaia Stones. So we can see where this mission is going to go... Except we only have limited units from the start, and no way of summoning more, so we'll have to be careful. [WALK15] Mission 15 Location: Holy City of Wendel Victory Conditions: -Fire the warp cannon! Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. -Luzio Malis sinks. -The Priest of Light dies. -All your gatherer units are destroyed. Number of Main Characters: 3 (Roget required) Starting Mineral: 0 Starting Fruit: 0 Hidden Item Locations: -1. 1sq South of nearest Mana Statue to Luzio Malis -2. 1sq South of the platform in the centre body of water (requires aquatic) -3. 2sq NorthWest of the South East corner of the map, in water (aquatic req) This level is a pain. The enemy will keep summoning new units (mainly heavy) and there's little you can do about it. Your focus here is, of course, going to be getting your gatherers safely to the Gaia. Right, let's describe this map a bit first. There are two Gaia resources near the Luzio Malis that have 6 stones each, meaning we need to locate another 8 from somewhere. The easiest place to get this additional 8 from is a Gaia resource that is just outside and to the East of the South-Eastern most exit from the City walls. The problem is that the enemy carrier is due south of the South-Central exit through the city wall, so it's not easy to get the stones out from under their noses. Lizardons are the best for this, since they can jump the wall like nothing, but you only have two, so the task is difficult. Knowing this, the way I would play it is to send a good group of your fighting units to distract the enemy at the central gate while you guide all 6 of your gatherer's round to that Gaia resource to collect 6 of the stones. Keep them near enough the Mana Statue that they don't die, and just keep knocking off the enemies as they come through. You'll have to attract their attention though with one or two units. Also there is a Nevarlan troop hiding near the anchor- point to the North of this Gaia, so you will want to take him out with a Ground Unit to avoid unnecessary loss. After this, send the Rabites and Tonpoles after the nearest Gaia resources while the Lizardons collect the last two stones from the far Gaia, then have them help finish off the nearest Gaia resources. If for whatever reason all this fails, there is another source of Gaia Stones to the South West of the enemy carrier, but you'll be hard-pressed to get anything from there and survive. You may want to attack the enemy carrier until it relocates to another anchor point, but don't bother trying to sink it, since another will come along shortly afterward. You may also want to use a spare Duck GI to take care of the aquatic hidden items while the collection is going on. As long you don't lose too many units and get a few kills on the way, you'll be pretty much asured an S rank on this one. There's ample time, and most conditions have the full requirement by default anyway. Once the 20 stones are collected, it's mission complete and time to fire the cannon. [WALK16] Mission 16 Location: Gusthall Victory Conditions: -Find the Mana Stone of Wind Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. Number of Main Characters: 4 (Roget required) Starting Mineral: 1 Starting Fruit: 8 Recommended characters: Qucas, Falcon and Loki Hidden Item Locations: -1. 1sq East of nearest Treant to starting point -2. 1sq North of the Treant at the far East of the map. -3. 1sq North of the Treant at the centre-South of the level, near the enemy This one requires us to be a bit sneaky at first, since we don't want to have the enemy attack us just yet. Start off by creating your Gatherer Unit Base, and summon 5 Lizardons. Send 3 of them after the Treant just to your East (hidden item 1sq East of that), and 2 South through the Western passage way. They'll find a Gaia resource between two main rock-faces, but don't let them stray or they'll set of the Nevarlan alarm. After you have enough Gaia, build the Missile and Heavy Unit bases. Summon 4 Duck GIs and 3 Woodings. Place the Duck GI's near the edge of the map next to the Southern passage we're been collecting Gaia from, and the Woodings to the entrance of the passage. When you see the Gaia running out, send your Lizardons West of the Nightswan to unveal an anchor point and another Treant. Start gathering there, and when you see the first Treant running out, move the Nightswan to this anchoring point. Once your gathering scheme is back up and running, summon 3 Duck GIs and 5 Woodings. Our plan is to have the Ducks, maybe supported by Qucas, to go South, find another anchoring point, then engage the Nevarlan soldier. This will cause Flying Units to appear next to that group of Duck GIs we left over on the West side, and here with the Nevarlan Soldier, hence the Missile Units. They should go down pretty quickly, leaving us open to another Treant (with 50 berries to collect if we want). Victory Conditions: -Destroy all enemies Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. Once the Western group has defeated the Harpies, move them along the passsage to the south, Woodings in front, up to where the Gaia is. Meanwhile, take your group of Ducks at the East south of the Nightswan's new anchorpoint with a couple of Woodings, and have the rest advance using the Western passage. The idea is to have the three groups converge toward the lower centre of the map, where the enemy carrier is. If you advance quickly enough, the enemy won't have a chance to generate more than a small handful of units, leaving them open to attack. If you take your units too far South, you'll trigger Olbex's event too soon. You want to take the carrier down first so you no longer have to worry about it. Once we sink the enemy ship, Olbex will make an appearance, holding Minerva hostage. Seeing as he won't give her up without a fight, that's exactly what we're going to give him. Minerva sets up a protective shield, so all that's left is to take down Olbex. Victory Conditions: -Defeat Olbex Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. For this last part, we want to bring all our troops up to the front lines, and if you want extra healing safety, bring up the Nightswan to the anchor-point we just freed and build the Healing Home if you haven't done so already. Wait for Olbex's troops to come after you and pick them off one by one, leaving just Olbex to take down. After a short while he'll follow. Try and keep him surrounded, and use a variety of units to attack, including missile units, since he likes running round a lot. Brute-force over ignorance will prevail, and the mission will be completed. If you decide to leave the Nightswan at the Easter Anchor-point, have Roget stay there and wait for Olbex to come over looking for a fight. Surround the ship with Ducks and because of the difficult mobility of the area, he'll be half dead before he reaches us. Much to Gemiere's disgust, he plays the idea that they are his slaves, and the Ghosts accept this, but claim a test must be passed to obtain the Stone. The objective here seems imple enough: get Roget to the Mana Stone located at the central high point of the tower. Of course, they're not letting you in without a fight. First off, let's get some resources gathered, so summon up 4 Bebes and begin harvesting the Gaia near the starting point using them (hidden item 1sq West). We'll use this to build the Healing Home, Heavy and Flying Unit bases, and then start collecting the Treants to the west of the Nightswan. There's another hidden item at the far end of this stretch outside the tower. While gathering, take three of your leader units north through the gate and take out a sole beastman ghost there, then return to base. Round about the time that the first Treant is polished off, some reinforcements should arrive and start making their way in your direction. Summon up a few Woodings and put them in the gate with your leader units behind to reinforce with skills, though shouldn't present a great problem. More Beastmen Ghosts will start to congregate from the West round the Treant through the gate. Take them down with the Woodings, they don't stand a chance. Slowly advance with your Woodings, Loki and Qucas through the West bridge, where you'll encounter a few more vehicle's. Once this area is secure, summon 4 rabites and have them start working on the Treant. Our next step while this is happenning is to take our little exploration group to the North-West corner of the map and take out two more beast-ghosts if they there. Then take them across the bridge to the centre point of the level, where the Mana Stone is, and take down the remaining beast- ghosts. Once your Beebes have taken care of the two Treants tot he West, have them tackle the Gaia to the north of the western most one, inside the tower walls. We're now going to start making use of the berries we've been collecting, and summon a considerable amount of Heavy and Flying units, and have them congregate near this Gaia resource (together with Qucas and Loki for skills). You'll see why soon enough (lucky you to have this pre-emptive material). And why not take a lone troop round the back to uncover the last parts of the level? Even better, if you have enough Gaia (which you should), build the Altar of Wind. Once we've amassed a good quantity of troops in the south-West corner inside the tower, and have a good backup of berries, take Roget and Gauser to the centre-point of the tower where the Mana Stone is, and watch the fun begin. As Roget enters the vicinity of the stone and Luna appears and offers her service, Juhani and a whole kaboodle of Pedan troops will appear (surprise surprise) just where we arranged all our troops. He's determined to take down Roget with his own hands, so get ready for blood. Victory Conditions: -Defeat Juhani Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Gauser must not die. All hell is going to break loose, and chances are most of your troops are going to kick the bucket one way or another, but you'll do some serious damage. One way to back up things is when you're troops are looking a bit down in the dumps, is summon Dangaard to really prod some serious buttock. Hidden Item Locations: -1. 1sq North of the nearest Treant to the start. -2. 1sq South of the Gaia South of the bridge. -3. 1sq West of the Gaia by the castle entrance. First thing is first, we're going to go through the drill of building the Gathering Unit Base and setting 4 Bebes on the Treant nearby. Advance your leader units South and take out the enemy units there, they shouldn't present any great difficulty. I found the task easier with some magic to back up. Once the Treant berries have been collected, move the Nightswan South to bridge and start collecting the Gaia to the to the South. Summon 3 Golems and 3 Tortoise Knights. We'll take these, D'Kelli and Qucas over the bridge and in to the castle to take out the enemies waiting on the other side. Once the first batch are out of the way, take your Toitoises and advance slowly forward. Once you reach a certain point, three more Tyranosaurs will be revealed at the next gateway. Your tortoises should be able to slowly take them out without causing them to advance. Keep your two optional characters behind to reinforce, and use magic if they start to advance. While this is going on, get your Bebes over the wall, and look for a Treant about 5 or 6 sq South of where these Tyranosaurs are. Beging collecting that as soon as possible (now you see why we wanted Bebes). Now when the Tyranosaurs go down, have your units fall back somewhat so that no one advances too far, reason being we will trigger the next event too soon. You want to gather the Treants to the South and then North of the last Tyranosaurs and build up some more units first. Victory Conditions: -Defeat the Black Dragon Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Gauser must not die. When you have enough berries, summon more Tortoise Knights and Golems, and set them up so that you have your missile units just this side of the gate where the Tyranos were, and your heavy units are at the other side of this plaza, back where the gate leading to the Nightswan is. When you have either 4 or 5 of each, send a unit forward through the gate. We'll trigger the appearance of a Black Dragon. He starts off being a Flying Unit, but when his HP is reduced by half (ie he reaches 1000HP in easy mode) he turns into a Ground Unit that lands just East of the centre of the Plaza.Meaning he runs right into our Golem trap. Victory Conditions: -Get the Nightswan to Lowenburg's terrace Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Gauser must not die. Now, the quick way to finish this level is to have the Nightswan waiting behind all this mess, and as soon as the dragon goes down, advance at full speed to the castle terrace (directly west of the entrance ways) and anchor it there. This completes the mission. This avoids confronting the units which will appear left right and centre when the dragon goes down. If you want to milk the level for what it's worth, wait for the enemies to come to the gate where the dragon was and start taking them down one by one. Then move the Nightswan to an anchor point behind the Treant to the South of the gate and start collecting Gaia there and from the North (there's another anchor point if you want to take advantage of it). Get your leader units out under the bridge to the East to give them room. Build the Ground Unit Base, and use the collected Treant to summon 3 Big Babies. Take Valda forward a bit until you see a Nevarlan vehicle. She should start attacking it and be able to take it out at range without receiving more than one or two hits. Once the 3 Big Babies are ready, have them join your remaining three leader units, unanchor the Nightswan and take it (and your bebes, use one to uncover the hidden item in the lake too) toward the South West corner of the map, and take Valda slowly Southward until she reveals a lone Nevarlan soldier. Take him out easily from the distance (you should be doing around 40-50 damage per shot), then move your Big Babies to where the Nevarlan soldier was, with Gauser and Qucas trailing behind for support. Continue south with Valda and do the same with another two soldiers there (one directly Stouh between the trees, another toward the anchor point toward the East), while your Big Babies deal with the troops coming out of the fortress perimeter. Once the two Nevarlan soldiers have been taken out, anchor the Nightswan on the South edge of the map, and start collecting the Treant there to produce more units. At this point you will want to bring Falcon and Roget to where the Nightswan is, and also maybe retreat your troops from the fortress entrance for regrouping nearer the Nightswan. Produce Big Babies as soon as you have the Treant berries to do so, and arrange them North of the Nightswan. Watch out for the occasional attack from the East, and a vehicle that is lurking there (I used Gauser's Lunatique attack to great effect here). The problem with Big Babies is that they get provoked easily by the Chibi Devils, and tend to run off. The good thing is that when they absorb energy from the enemy, they become pretty much selfsustaining. Once you have about 5 or 6, take them through the castle entrance together with Valda, and begin taking down their forces in mass. Valda is useful have attack the ship from a distance, since her attack can also take out other units at the same time. I also took the opportunity to use one Big Baby and explore the NorthEast corner of the map, taking out another vehicle and finding another hidden item. While a rather messy battle, if you send in the occasional new Big baby to replenish drained forces, and keep gathering from the Treant at the South,a nd if you're feeling skilled enough the one outside the castle entrance, this level should be complete in no time. Send 4 of them directly East of your position to collect the Treant there (item 1sq East of it), then send 2 after the Gaia directly North of you (item 1sq West) and the remaining 2 after the Treant just West of the Gaia. When they've finished collecting from the Gaia, send the remaining rabites after the western Treant. While the gathering is going on, build the Healing Home. From personal experience, don't build the unit bases, this seems to trigger the enemy moving and attacking you early before it is time. As soon as the resources here are collected, move the Nightswan and units due North almost to the edge of the map and anchor it there. Doing this is going to reveal a couple of Peddan Archers up ahead, and trigger the appearance of our old friend Celestan, who is already at the top of the Celestial Peak. After some further delving into the story behind Yurchael and Baxilios, the challenge ensues. Victory Conditions: -Defeat Celestan Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Yurchael must not die. Take out the archers with your leader units, the rapidly build the Missile, Ground and Heavy Bases, and summon up a large number of Missile Units and some Ground and Heavy Units, then brace yourself for some incoming enemies from the East. Get your Rabites collecting the nearby Treant among the madness (don't worry if a few die, it's bound to happen), and keep a handful of the Missile Units nearby. Having Valda near where the Treant is can help you to backup your Heavy Units with some long range fireballs. Make sure that you pull your units back all the time to stop them straying to near the cliff where Celestan is, since the vehicles with him have a long range and really eat through your units. Send about 4 Missile Units back south to where the Nightswan was before, then across to the Treant in the South East. Now the reason we left a good handful of Missile Units near the Nightswan is that Celestan has once more brought along some of his dragon friends, and one is going to appear right near the Nightswan. If you haven't done so, move a handful of units to the South East to take down a second dragon there. Now, after a while, you'll see that the enemy will start sending Gatherer Units to try and take your berries. This is an indicator that they're running low on resources. And their units are running out. The down-side is that your units will have even more of an inclination to run into firing range of the enemy vehicles. To be on the safe side, keep two Missile Units near the west-side cliffs this side of the bridge. I've found that sometimes a vehicle or two will venture over the bridge. In this case, you can get the upper hand by taking them out, leaving the end target more accessible. Now among all this chaos, amass 7 or 8 Big Babies, and when you've managed to get a stable situation by which you can congregate them near the Treant, get them moving under the bridge as fast as possible, stopping for nothing. Do NOT take any Missile Units with you, as they tend to attack Celestan and precipitate an early attack, which is not good. If you keep persisting, you should only lose one or maybe two. Then make your way South and East to where the enemy carrier is. But, oh noes! Another Dragon, and no missile units! This is why we chose Big Babies, because they tend to recover what they lose and stay alive. Out of my group of 7 I lost 1 to vehicles and one to the dragon, that's it. Once the dragon is dealt with, sink their carrier. So far so good, we've got the upper hand. Move the Nightswan South now, then over to where the enemy carrier was. Cure up your Big Babies, and start collecting the nearby Gaia. You won't get much, but still, every little helps. Now take a band of 6 Big Babies and have them cross the bridge and start concentrating their fire on the nearest vehicle. Most are going to die, there's no two ways about it, but keep persisting, and summon 3 Golems to follow them. While you're keeping them busy, start bringing all your missile units under the bridge for backup, and Qucas too. Have him attack using Jinn from below and keep him out of trouble. If you keep on like this, you should find that if you don't take them all down, you'll be left with only a badly beaten up Celestan to deal with coming down the mountain, and he can be easily finished off with the rest of your units, and leader units if need be. Just don't get too cocky, and you'll see the Mission Complete sign in no time. OK, starting off, we've had a brief glimpse of where the enemy is. Start off by taking Heavy Units North of your position to take out the grount units there, while taking your three Bebes to the North West corner of the map to collect the Gaia there (by the time the first collection is on it's way to Luzio, you should have taken out the Ground Units). Send your Flying Units up to join the Heavy units, and regroup them near the Mana Statue to recover any loss and be prepared for incoming troops from the East. Add a couple of reinforcing leader units to the mix, since we'll have company coming in from the East not long from now. Move your Missile units near the Luzio, since the enemy may send a couple of flying units after you, and have your Ground Units go out to meet the Vuscavs head on. This will help prevent your Gatherer units getting toasted. You can't kill them, but this will at least disable them. Now use this time to collect as fast as possible from the north West. Take your Flying and Heavy Units, together with some Leaders, after Elena, and take her down. She doesn't die either, but if you disable her, it will cause the enemy carrier to unload a considerable number of units that will come after you. Once they're heading your way, get your big Babies to the South East corner and take out the missile units that remain there. When the area is secure, send gatherers to get the Gaia from here. While Elena is defeated, the enemy carrier will just cruise around aimlessly, so no further enemy units will appear. Move as fast as you can in order to take out the Two Vuscavs before Elena wakes up. Repeat the same strategy, and if necessary collect from the North East corner (in fact you may want to split things up, since it's a long way round to go for your Lizardons), and you're home free. When the last batch of 10 gaia is collected, before the cannon is fired, the aura round the Nightswan will drop, leaving us free to reboard it and do a runner after we fire. Mission Complete! While this is happenning, send your leader units out of the way due West until the edge of the map, then up the Northern ramp, and have them wait. Send the Rabites after the Treant to the South (item 1sq South), and the Bebes West to find a Gaia, on the North side of the passageway. Once collection of the Gaia has finished, send the Bebes after the Treant on top of the bridge, and move your Leader Units East to that point. Once they reach it, move the Nightswan just West, on to the bridge, then due North to find another anchor-point almost at the top of the map. When you do this, you want to coordinate your Leader units to move to the same spot, and take out a Special Unit that is on the way, so that it doesn't hit the Nightswan with any fire. Once anchored again, send the Bebes after the Treant that is just to the West, next to the water. Now build the Healing Home and the Heavy Unit House, and crank out 5 Heavy Units. You'll probably come under fire by troops following you from the South, so be vigilant and use your leader units to good effect. Once you have an opening, take your Heavy Units round the North East and take down Baxilios. You shouldn't suffer any loss. Taking a leader units with you to boost stats is recommended. Heal up your units, summon a couple more, and move further West to where the Treant is. Chances are around this time a Dragon will appear just north of you. He shouldn't be too hard to take out. Once he's down, optionally heal up (you shouldn't need to, trust me), and then send your units West to the bridge there, where Inath waits. A nice little touch, if you can, is to place a ranged unit near the Treant we just passed to take out any gatherer units that try to take the berries there, thus limiting the enemy's supply to create more units. You'll want to try and summon some more Heavy units to keep near the Nightswan now, as after some more time has elapsed, another couple of Dragons will appear to the South, and one will most likely go after the Nightswan. If you're fast enough taking down the Guldrea, this event may not happen. Now take your attacking group forward to the North West corner, and start taking out the enemy base. There's another dragon here, so same as before, take him down quick before moving on to attack the ship. Most of the defenses will have been defeated on your way to the ship, so there is little standing in your way. In the middle of the river, 1 sq South of the point between the two Gaia Now it's quite a shame that Roget only spotted one shard of mirror, because there are, in fact, 5, and each produces a different class of unit. Start off by building the Gatherer House and summon 5 Bebes. Send these after the Treant just North (item 1sq North) and move your Leader Units out of the way just toward the East. You may want to opt for sending one of your Bebes after the Gaia just the other side of the water, but careful it doesn't stray too far North, though you SHOULD be ok, and this will reveal valuable terrain. Don't rush this part, and don't build anything yet. I've found that if you just sit tight you won't get attacked, so be patient. Once you've gathered all the Treant, build the Missile and Ground houses, and summon 4 Missile Units and as many Big Babies as you can. Send the 4 Missile units across the water toward the North to take out the Flying Shard and units. Leave them there for the time being, as they'll come in handy from that position. At the same time, take your Ground Units, Leaders and the Nightswan East, up hill, to find another anchor point and the Missile Shard. Take out the units and Shard, then anchor the Swan. You'll come under fire from Heavy Units descending from the North, which is why we chose Big Babies as even though they are weak against Heavy Units, they can self-sustain quite well in numbers. Summon a handful of Rabites at this point and collect the nearby Treant. Also I recommend building the Healing Home and the Flying Base, so we can produce a handful of Flying units to take on the Heavy shard at the far North. First off though, take out the Ground shard nearby, and defend your position until we're ready to move forward. This final stage will be all in one part, no rest in between. Have your Flying Units head North from where the Ground Shard was and they'll find the Heavy Shard and some units. Back-up your Flying Units with Alma and Qucas, and take it down quickly. While this is happenning, take your remaining Ground Units West from there toward the bridge, which will have several shadow leader units on it. Coordinate them attacking from the bridge with your Missile Units attacking from below in the water. Send one unit behind West of the anchor point to pick up the item there, and same for the one in the water. Once the Flying Units have finished their job, have them back-up the rest of the platoon, and you're laughing. The main thing here is to not get within range of the Mirage Bishop, 'cause this will trigger all kinds of hell. It's a slow running level, and in a similar vein to the last one, we'll be doing a lot of gathering before making any moves. So start off by building the Gatherer Base, 5 Bebes, and send two North and two South for Treant, and the remaining one West for Gaia. Now, sit and way for all that to be collected. Once this first batch of collection has finished, move the Nightswan due South to the egde of the map, and then West to find an anchor point and another Treant. Gather all there is to offer here. Once that's bled dried than the Gobi Desert, unhook the Nightswan again and take it due West to find another anchor point, and collect all the Gaia there is there to offer. Now comes the part that ever player wishes they knew the first time round. Build the Ground, Heavy and Missile Bases. It's time for some strategic placement. Place one Big Baby due West of your position, at the edge of the map. Leave a Machine Golem at your current position. (*) Leave a Machine Golem at your last used Anchor Point. Leave a Machine Golem in the South East corner. Leave a Machine Golem where you started (*) Leave a Machine Golem in the North East corner. Leave a Machine Golem due North of your last anchor point, at the North edge. Leave a Denden with your Big Baby for now. Once you've got the nearest ones in position, and you're moving the ones that have to travel the farthest, unhook the Nightswan and take it back to your last anchoring point, but don't anchor it. Then, take it due North to the North edge of the map, and then West to find a mirror anchor-point of the last one we used. We're taking this long route to not pass through the Mirage Bishop's gaze. Take your Gatherers on the same route, and use them to collect the Treant just West and in the water. We'll also summon a Big Baby and a Denden and emulate what we did the other side. At this point, move your Leader units to the Gaia that we gathered from at the beginning of the level. Once all the Gathering has finished, we're going to carefully move a Bebe to each of the locations I marked with a (*) before. These are going to serve as Pumpkin fodder, so put them at the edge of the map, with the Golems a few squares away. Move your Dendens near the Mana Statue MOVING ALONG THE EDGE. Leave them 2 sq away from the Statue, North and South. Now, once everything is in place, if you've followed these numbers you'll be able to summon 5 more Golems. Do so, and leave one and the Bebes behind with the Nightswan. Then take the other 4 and coordinate an attack on the Mirage Bishop together with your Leader Units. Send Qucas and Loki up front with Valda ad Belga bringing up the rear. Leave Roget out of harms way in the centre of the map. Now the fun begins. If everything's gone according to plan, the Bebes will take the damage from the exploding Pumpkin Bombs, leaving your Machine Golems to deal with the enemies that have appeared. As soon as the Bebes go down, use those slots to summon more Machine Golems, and send them in to reinforce the attack plan. You should find that un a minute or less the Bishop has fallen, and you're singing victory (you probably won't even have a chance to send in reinforcements). By this point, Bebes will be ready, so you can send them after the Treant that is due North West from your position. Keep an eye on them, 'cause even they can be thick as two planks in this level for some reason and need a lot of bebesitting, lest they go off on their onesies. This makes for a very mind- numbing start, since there's 100 berries to collect. Don't worry about rushing it, you've got pleanty of time on this level. Having bagged the lot, send 4 of your Bebes due North of the Nightswan to find a Gaia source and start mining it, and send the remaining one due South to do the same (since the bottom one only has 9 stones, no point sending more than one). While you're collecting the stones, build the Healing Home and the Missile and Ground Unit Bases. Prepare a squad of 4 Denden and 3 Big Babies, Gauser and Qucas, and maybe even Gemiere while you're at it. Take them all to where the Treant is, then a bit further Northwest to encounter a Black Dragon. Your first round of attacks will only get him to change to a Ground Unit and retreat, which means you'll then have to go after the Beholder just West, and lure the dragon back out. Once that's done, you can consider taking down the two enemy vehicles behind him. Bring your squad back to the Nightswan (and if those units in the middle of the water are still alive, take them down on the way back) to recover before the next incursion. By this point you should have collected all the Gaia there is to collect. Take your Ground Units and Gauser South from the Nightswan, then West once they reach the Gaia there, and have them take down the Beholder. Move the Nightswan up behind them and anchor it to the point you've just liberated. Start collecting the nearby Treant. Now on to more tricky matters. Summon about 5 or 6 Golems, and maybe back up with one or two air units, and take this force, together with Loki and Qucas, West, where you will find Inath, Baxilios, and two demons. If possible, lure Baxilios out to cross the bridge to you using a Flying unit, and defeat her before moving on to take Inath down, since both at the same time can be troublesome. Once these two hoodlums are fleeing with their tails between their legs, you should find that the Treant has dried up. Time to move on to collecting the next lot, so do this. When that's up, take the Nightswan further West and anchor it there. We now want to do some unit positioning for when we trigger Armageddon. You can start doing this while the collecting takes place. - Place two Big Babies in the South-West corner - Place two Denden to the North of where we encountered the first Black Dragon - Place two Golems to the West of the North-East Gaia - Place two Sky Dragons just South of the North West corner - Once collection finished, take two Bebes to the last anchoring point. Move the remainder of your units on to the bridge just North of the Nightswan, so they're still out of sight of any enemies, and have your Leader Units (minus Roget) nearby. You should have 3 slots left to summon units, so summon another 3 Golems and leave them on the bridge for now. Once all this is done, you're ready to remove the Mana Sword (or Sword of Mana, but that brings back horrible memories of the GBA title) and spring the trap. Queue scene... With probably the best line in the game... "The sword... from the Mana Goddess... This is the Sword of Mana!" Really? Victory Conditions: -Defeat the Mirage Bishop Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die, Nightswan must not sink Soon as we spring the trap, monsters appear. If your placing was right, you should have a tremendously unfair advantage over the enemy, and have the same number of units in each area, and more powerful. Now this isn't to say that none will die, but let's face it, the odds are stacked against them. Any losses, replace with Golems over by the ship and add them to the final attack force, 'cause it's time to go after the Bishop. He'll have two land dragons guarding him, so if you can bring in any surplus units from your Western attacks it'd be handy. Keep pummeling him with Golem attacks, backed up by some boosting from your leader units and some magic, and he'll go down in no time. Inath it appears went along with this plan because he was bored of being the king and inheriting a kingdom. Much more fun to build it from scratch. Boys and their toys... As for Bishop, he continues to revel in the song of Anise's mirror. The song of a witch as powerful as the Mana Tree, yet could never become a goddess. Behind them, the mirror of Anise produces shadows of solderis from the different realms. Time for some action. [WALK26] Mission 26 Location: Mirage Castle Victory Conditions: -Defeat the Mirage Bishop Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. Number of Main Characters: 5 Starting Mineral: 4 Starting Fruit: 11 Hidden Item Locations: -1. 1sq SouthWest of the Treant in the South West corner -2. 3sq North of the Mana Statue near the North-East corner -3. 3sq North of the Mana Statue near the North-West corner Note on Dark Mirrors: There are several mirrors in this level, and each is ONLY susceptible to attacks from a particular type of MOB (main characters, magic, and other MOB types have no effect). The way to determine this type is to observe what type of MOBs it is producing, and apply the weakness rules explained several times during the game. Also they will attack using a dark magic that can inflict blindness, and since you can only attack from one square you'll want to make sure that if one of your units is blinded you pull it out and set another in its place. For quick reference, the order of the mirrors will be Heavy, Missile, Aerial Mobility, Ground, so create units in the appropriate order (Flying Unit, Ground, Missile, Heavy). Note also that enemy MOBs from other mirrors will advance on you, so you'll find that enemies you're weak to will also be among the units and mirror you're attacking (it's not going to be easy). You start out with your ship anchored in the south-east corner of the map, to the east of a main courtyard for the palace and your group of Main Characters in front. First off, get one or two rabites spawned and take them just into the courtyard to reveal a Gaia and Treant and begin to harvest from both. Also create the Flying Unit Base. Now you're going to have to keep an eye on the one harvesting the Treant because due to the map layout the AI has the terrible tendency of sending them off to the other end of the courtyard to then loop round and go back to the tree. This will do two things. First off, it will reveal that there are two more Treants in the courtyard, very handy, but also it will reveal that at the other end of the courtyard there is a dark mirror that is spawning Phantasms and Heavy-type MOBs. Roget will exclaim that the mirror has to be shattered with a particular type of MOB (you would not believe just how frustrating it was to not pick up on this in Japanese). For this first mirror, you will have to attack it with Flying Units, as it is producing Heavy-types. So the longer you can keep out of sight of this mirror and still harvesting the better, you'll have to fend off the occasional phantasm that comes through from another part of the level with your main characters. Once you have a few Flying Units ready, take them over to the mirror and shatter it. This will take down one of the enemy production lines and make things a bit easier. Behind where the mirror was you'll find another Treant (with a hidden item behind it), and a Mana Goddess Statue, so you may want to consider bringing your main characters over here, or at least a couple of magic and/or Light weapons. Also start producing two or three Light-type MOBs, and keep an eye on your rabites to make sure you still have some harvesting (you're going to find that Flying Units from another later mirror will keep a rather consistent flow going and will keep beating down your Gatherers). Take these Light-MOBs over to the Statue and when ready take them in to the castle via this west entrance to shatter the mirror leading to the east (don't bother with the stairs, they lead nowhere). Since this mirror produces Archer-type MOBS, the Light-MOBs will take care of it nicely. Meanwhile, build the Archer-type MOB House if you haven't done so already. At this point things will be a bit more stable, and your ship will be under much less threat, so consider getting a few BeeBee's in on the harvesting act (Rabites will have a horrendous time trying to get that Treant the opposite end of the courtyard, and will hamper you're getting ground units to the frontline). They'll be handy for the additional Gaia soon to come. Behind this mirror is another statue, so take through your units and heal up. I'd suggest leaving your main characters behind for now. Once you have a few Archers ready, lead them round to the statue to regroup and prepare for the next stage of assault. Also you may want to get some Flying Units ready, since there are a few heavy units about. Head east into the next room, and up the stairs to reach the mirror to the north. Attack it with your Archers. You'll find a lot of overspill from the room behind, so be careful. Also some phantasms may come round from behind through the middle of the level (where the Statue we passed just now was, by jumping off the balcony from above). There's a Gaia here which BeeBee's will be good to access. Behind the mirror are two small courtyards, the northern-most one with a Statue. This is mirrored on the west side of the map, so all the action is now going to be in the main room that's dead-centre. The next mirror is to the north of this room, which leads to the throne room. This mirror takes a beating from Heavy-type MOBs, so get some ready if you haven't done so. You'll also find at this point that the production of phantasms will increase, and that Bazilios, Annais and Roget's Brother waiting behind the mirror may get impatient and join in the fun. I found that a group of a good 10 Golems and 4 Flying Units to deal with the Tyranus units worked quite well. Once the mirror is down, try and lead Bazilios out so you can attack her from two or three sides. This will also help avoid the Status in the throne room healing her. Once she's down, if you're units are looking bad, I'd suggest pulling back to the statues and regrouping, since Annais won't move until you enter the throne room. If you want to stand any chance of defeating these two, you'll have to lure Annais out so that he isn't cured by the Statue. Get one of your long range units to fire at him, then retreat, and repeat until he's out of the throne room. Also, as seen previously, he uses a rather nasty circular attack that can cause your units to turn on eachother, so if you can inflict blindness on him you'll be spared at least some of the grief this can cause. Once he's down, it's time for the final showdown with Roget's brother. Again, you want to get him as far from that Statue as you can, and if you can block the path behind him once he's out all the better. I've found that sending groups of 3 Sky Dragons lures him out and inflicts some damage (it's slow going, but you get there). You don't want to send too many after him as he can cast Meteor Shower and inflicts 275 damage per units (nasty). You'll also want to be bringing forward some of your main characters to help with the task (if you can time some Air Blast or other unit focused offensive magic with the moment he lowers his barrier, you can get some extra 100HP hits in there). Once he goes down, Mission Complete. [WALK27] Mission 27 Location: Sea of Chaos Victory Conditions: -Defeat the Goddess of Doom Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. Number of Main Characters: 5 Starting Mineral: 5 Starting Fruit: 11 Hidden Item Locations: -1. The square between the Treant and Gaia in the North West corner -2. The square between the Treant and Gaia in the North East corner -3. The square between the Treant and Gaia in the South East corner My recommendation Main Character-wise is Roget with Lumina (also try and increase his attack range somewhat, since his attack will be most effective toward the end and you want to try and keep him at a safe distance), Qucas, Falcon, Alluma with Sylphid, and Belgar with Shade. You want Lumina to be able to heal Roget, Qucas and Falcon for their Battle Skills (increase atk and defense, and increase Missile effectivity), Sylphid with Alluma for a ranged spell, and Belgar for his healing and increased Healing Home effectivity. This battle is no walk in the park, as you can probably tell by the beasties that have just appeared before you. It seems that Bazilios got out the wrong side of the bed before this battle, and is not in a good mood to say the least. And you get the honour of fighting against 4 of her too. Or so you would think... One is real, the others are fakes which will disappear, emitting a shockwave 1 square around them and inflicting damage on units. When this happens for the first time, a dialog between your characters will take place regarding this. The screams that you hear coming from her, when you're not being attacked by her, mean that the four beasties have switched places. This means that if you inflict some serious amounts of damage on the real one, that one will appear somewhere completely different next time, so you either want to follow her (not recommended), or wait for her to come round to a spot you've secured. Also, the mirrors that appear at some of the points where she appears cannot be broken, so don't even bother! You'll start with the Nightswan anchored at the southern-most point of the map. First thing is first, spawn some Rabites and send them to the south-east corner of the map to start collecting mineral (about 20 worth) and fruit. Invest in 3 or 4 BeeBees to take care of the supplies in the south-west corner, since the path is not Rabite friendly, and also they will be more resiliant to possible attacks. Create the Healing Home and houses for Ground and Missile Units, and start by spawning 4 Radoon and 5 Denden. Keep your Characters within the Nightswan range for healing, put the Denden around them to benefit from the Battle Skills and if possible healing (they are very useful against the Flying units that will come after you when they are revealed, plus they have long range and inflict Status Ailments). You'll gradually want to create more Denden and start making a box round the front of the Nightswan. Send the Radoon Northwest a little to find one instance of Bazilios (or should I say Mother Goddess of Darkness). The vines also heal units nearby, so it is rather important to knock these guys out fast. The advantage you'll find with Radoons is they can regain HP when attacking at times, making them rather resiliant for this fight, plus they are very effective against the vines. You'll want to try and get ole Bazza down quite a bit HP-wise (to about 20%, so just after a dialog sequence occurs with Yurchael giving some info), but there are a couple of things to remember. There are two stages when things get nasty. The first is when you get a Bazilios Beast down to about half their life, they'll launch a rather fearsome attack against your units consisting of two or hree dark force explosions that will damage you badly (what, more than she already is?!?). The second is when you get her down to 0, and a new enemy appears in her stead, and get new mission objectives. We'll get to that in a bit. So before that second one, you will want to try and weaken some of the fake Mother Beasties, stash away as much Gaia as possible and create a God Beast Altar (preferably Moon or Light). You'll be needing to recreate a couple of these, so start storing up for the winter. Meanwhile, keep creating groups of 4 Radoons and slowly hammering away at Bazza 'til you get her HP low, and if you can eliminate some of the lesser troops while you're at it, all the better. Once you've exhauseted both southern corners resource-wise, get some more Denden spawned and tighten your defense round the Nightswan, since the fun will start soon. The sort of formation you want to go for is this: XXXXX XX XX X X XXNXX Where X are Denden, N is the Nightswan, and you have someof your main characters in the middle. If you can enforce that with an extra layer, all the better, and experiment a bit, but this is just to give you an idea of what to start with and what you're aiming to do. Send a few Beebee's to have a scout round the Northern corners to discover hidden items near the Treants, and if possible get some more resources (chances are they'll die quickly, but they'll reveal any parts of the map you haven't explored with your Ground Units too, so that'll be handy for the end battle... and the fact that this will free up some of your unit limit). Then, take down the remaining HP of our screeching friend. When she does finally go down, the Darkness of Anith will be revealed after breaking the Black Mirrors (oh, so THAT'S how!), and she's mean. After inflicting damage on all of your units, a new mission starts, in which your objective is to defeat this evil force. Victory Conditions: -Defeat the Dark Goddess of Ruin Anith Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. The tactic here is to now create groups of say 2 Radoon and 2 Denden, and send them after the beastie. The idea is to use the Denden from far and lure the beastie toward the Nightswan, where your main force resides (though not TOO close). She now has several new attacks, and will very often inflict darkness on your units close-by. Your main problem will be an attack that affects all units on the board and absorb some of the attack (over 100HP, hence wanting to keep near the Nightswan for healing), and a nice circular attack that turns your units into Shadow Zero. After this she'll retreat for a while, before reappearing again to cause more havoc. Whenever the all-unit attack happens, recheck the formation of your units round the Nightswan, because the game's AI tends to send one or two units out galavanting after the beastie for no apparent reason, so make sure your formation stays tight for when beastie makes her way over. After a while she'll come over of her own accord, then disappear a bit further away (chance for you to heal), then rinse and repeat. It's this point when the damage will start being inflicted (both ways really). Make sure you keep spawning Denden as they fall. The idea is that the DenDen, powered by the Battle Skills of the units mentioned at the beginning, will be inflicting between 20-30 a shot, keeping her at a distance, and stopping your main characters from dying. Also, if any stray Flying units come along, they're mince. Reinforce this with a few God-Beasts (again, the Moon God-Beast is most effective) to knock off a few dollops of HP, and also to eliminate any annoying enemies that could be distracting your troops, and above all, keep an eye on Roget's HP! Once the beastie's HP is down to 30%, you should get a quick dialog scene, then another once the HP reaches 0. Not only that, but you'll see a cutscene of Yurchael being called by Seshiria, a lady in white, saying that the Mana Sword must be used to finish off the beast. Bazilios, back in human form, curses Seshiria, and Yurchael tells Roget to run forth and finish the beastie off with the holy blade. Attacks from all units against the beastie will be useless now. Take Roget forward and slay her with a couple of blows. The Darkness will evaporate, leaving behind Bazilios in her monster form again. Cue FMV. As Roget stands defiant before Bazilios, The Father of the Winged Ones emerges suddenly from the depths of the Chaos Ocean and knocks her back. Behind him, the Black Mirror of Anith emerges. The elemental spirits gather their powers in the Holy Sword of Mana held in Roget's hands, and with his friends behind him, he launches it into the mirror, shattering it to pieces, and evaporating Bazilios' monstruous form. For Mana's second game on the DS Brownie Brown turned to Shimomura, composer of the critically acclaimed Legend of Mana and Kingdom Hearts soundtracks. The soundtrack is nothing short of impressive, mixing the unique style of Shimomura with influences from some of the themes created by Kikuta in Seiken Densetsu 3. While in the game itself, the sound is quite substandard due to compression, the CD boasts a high quality sound as one would expect. Creating a whole new set of melodies, the tracks fit perfectly to all situations in the game, and are varied enough to not get too monotonous. Tracks of particular mention are the heroic main theme "To the Heroes of Old", the sinister "Ring of Revolving Fate" and the rocking "Battle Vs Celestan". Whether you've played the game or not, you must get this.
