Like early birds, Nintendo had the first press conference of the day. The public looked excited and expectant at all times. With the not-so-surprising news that Miyamoto would be there, we all expected a big new title announcement. Did it happen as expected? Did we find out about any cool new titles that we'll be able to play on the Nintendo Wii and the DS? Check out what happened; we tell you everything, play by play!
9:00 AM - A talking NES starts the show, followed by a video-presentation where we witness the Wii and DS's popularity throughout the world, their appearance on the news, etc.
9:01 AM - Reggie comes out, talks about Wii as a welcoming system for all sorts of players and how video games are taking over other forms of entertainment. He talks about the growth of Nintendo and the expansion of the video game market, which he's experienced even at his own home. The growth of the industry is due mostly to Nintendo, they're 69% responsible for it! - In less than a year and a half, the amount of older players has increased surprisingly. Women are also buying a lot more video games than they used to. Their new and original software has direct effect on the growth of the gaming industry. Nintendo DS is the highest selling gaming system on the planet!
9:14 AM - More video footage shows their success (people playing Wii Sports and other games. It ends with a guy wearing a NES as a helmet - funny…).
9:16 AM - Wii Zapper is presented as an attachment for the Wii-mote and Nunchuk. It will change the dynamics of first person shooters, just like the Wii-mote revolutionized the way to play games. Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles will be playable at E3 and can be played with the Zapper. "What's more fun that zombie zapping?" He says. Wii Zapper will be packaged along with the software, and also sold separately for $19.99. Medal of Honor: Airborne has also been designed to be played with the Zapper.
9:19 AM - He talks about Soul Calibur: Legends. It will have a unique look in the franchise. He also talks about WWE Smackdown Vs. Raw 2008, as well as Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword for the DS, with stylus in hand, which will be used for sword action. Square Enix will bring to the Wii Dragon Quest: Swords. Mario and Sonic will come together at Mario & Sonic: At the Olympic Games.
9:21 AM - Reggie starts talking about Super Smash Bros. Brawl. We know you can't wait to battle with Giga-Bowser! The game will have four controller options. The release date is made official: Super Smash Bros. Brawl will launch on Dec. 3, 2007. Reggie promises it will be the best Super Smash Brothers title by far!
9:24 AM - Reggie welcomes Mike and Jackie from their Treehouse Group. They play The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. It's explained how the touch screen revolutionizes the game. It's intuitive and cool. The way he uses the sword, the grappling hook, etc. will change with the stylus. It's becoming their favorite Zelda game, it's a huge success in Japan, where it's already out.
9:27 AM - They demo Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. It has a unique visor system that hadn't been used before. The special new controls really come together in battle. (Looks good!)
9:30 AM - There's another video and they talk about Nintendo Wi-Fi connection. Their online system works great and it's free. They can't wait to prove themselves with more titles!
9:33 AM - Reggie introduces the "Wii Ware" channel and also the "Check Mii Out" channel, where you can upload your Miis and have people check them out and vote.
9:34 AM - He starts talking about Nintendo using online gameplay in a serious way, and he puts as examples Pokémon, Nintendo DS Wi-Fi, Super Mario Strikers, etc. Then he unveils Madden NFL 08 as the first realistic looking game that will be online, as well as FIFA 08, which includes a party mode, where you can use your own Mii to compete against Ronaldinho. Dragon Quest will be online, too, as well as Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. It will have an exclusive wireless guitar controller.
9:36 AM - Mario Kart Wii is announced and it will be available, and online on the 1st quarter of next year!!!
9:37 AM - Custom steering wheel is announced as a way to control racing games more realistically, and it will come packaged with Mario Kart Wii.
9:40 AM - Mr. Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's worldwide president, is welcomed to the stage. He talks about the gaming history he's seen since he started playing 30 years ago. He was also told by his parents he was wasting his life, but he tells how video games can give a very positive experience if used the right way. He talks about how the gaming population is expanding and gaming becoming more acceptable.
9:47 AM - Another video is shown. Families, friends, etc. explain how they play the Wii and how they enjoy the new type of gameplay. It includes footage of Super Mario Galaxy, Brain Age 2, etc.
9:50 AM - Reggie announces that Super Mario Galaxy will be in the market in November 12th of this year. They believe this game sets a new standard for player interface. It will take skill to finish but it's instantly accessible to people that don't usually play games. He says "we're just getting started!"
9:54 AM - He speaks about other games we should be expecting, like MySims, Nintendogs, Picross DS, MyWordCoach, MyLifeCoach, etc.
9:56 AM - Wii Sports video clip leads to the presentation of WiiFit. They show footage and a demonstration of the game. You will use a special pad to do the exercises. It will also include dancing, in the way Dance Dance Revolution has done it before, and Miis will also be part of the equation! Yoga, aerobics, and much more!
10:00 AM - Shigeru Miyamoto finally shows up, with his smile, as always. He hasn't learned enough English yet, so he brings a translator along. He talks about WiiFit, which is the game he's excited about this year. He talks about how important it is to address health, too. They have three people come out and demonstrate WiiFit. Unfortunately, "the calibration is slightly off," Miyamoto says. (Oops!) Over 40 activities will be available within the game.
10:05 AM - Miyamoto shows the "Balance Board", which can measure weight, balance, body mass, etc. Thankfully, it's wireless! Reggie stands on the Balance Board and it measures his gravity balance and his body mass index! It was the funny moment of the conference…
10:10 AM - Miyamoto and Reggie compete in soccer head shots, standing atop the Balance Board. Reggie wins! And with no practice at all…
10:13 AM - Miyamoto leaves and Reggie starts talking about leadership and how Nintendo targets to lead the entertainment industry.
10:15 AM - Nintendo's Press Conference is over! More to come next year, I guess… or at the Tokyo Game Show!
It was exciting to see what Nintendo is bringing to the table this time, although nothing really surprised me. Somehow, we all expected the announcement of Mario Kart Wii, which was, without a doubt, the most exciting moment of the whole conference. The fact that it will be online is the best news they could bring, too.
WiiFit and the Zapper were also expected, especially because we've kind of seen these products before, at last year's E3 and on numerous images that have circulated through the Internet for a while... In my opinion, nothing beats last year's announcements, but it was a good conference and Reggie, as always, did a pretty good job. This was his first time on E3 as President of Nintendo of America.
Mario Kart Wii will be launched on Q1 2008, including online gameplay and a steering wheel attachment!
Super Mario Galaxy is coming out in November 12, 2007. Just a few more months!
Wii takes health seriously and presents WiiFit, which will offer 40 types of gameplay, including aerobics, yoga, dancing, and more!
Super Smash Bros. Brawl also has a release date for North America: December 3, 2007. Just in time for the holidays!
