With Activision's press conference running a little long, Midway had to hold off delivering some more gaming news to feed our need to know more about the footage shown during Sony's conference of Unreal Tournament 3. Other than Unreal Tournament 3, we had a few hopes for games that they would be talking a little more about, and they did not disappoint.
Midway kicks things off by talking a little bit about Stranglehold. The game looks spectacular, but we already know that. Midway also confirmed that Chow Yun Fat is reprising his role as Captain Tequila. The video demonstration shows off some of the bullet time capabilities, and this was displayed wonderfully as the good Captain is ambushed by four enemies and, one by one, he takes them out in John Woo action film style. There will be a demo available later this month and it will ship in August. We are also told that the game will have a special edition for the PS3. Stranglehold will come packed with the Blu-ray version the original film that inspired the game, Hard Boiled, all on one disc.
David Zucker then takes the stage to talk about a couple of games coming soon and mentions an original IP is coming. Exclusively coming this fall to the PS2 will be Aqua Teen Hunger Force Zombie Ninja Pro-am, based off the Adult Swim hit. I am looking forward to the game and can't wait to get my hands on it. Another announcement made was a game titled Total Non Stop Action for the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PS2. Then there a brief video for Ultimate Mortal Kombat on the DS, complete with a traditional evil laugh at the end.
A video then started for Blacksite Area 51, which is coming in September 2007. A space shot of the Earth and its beauty, then a narrative voice rolls out of the speakers "It looks like paradise from up here, doesn't it?" The screen goes black and then the narration continues, "From down here, it's hell…" Harvey Smith takes to the stage revealing that he will be taking the role of Aaron Pierce in the game and that we can expect a bigger demo in August. Along with the aid of Susan O'Connor, some details are revealed about the anticipated game. There are three main characters - Mitchell Ambrose, the likeable everyman, Grayson, who gives the impression of having been in prison or the military, and then there's Noah, the military intelligence specialist with a broad global perspective. Further implications of the morale of the characters greatly affect their posture and confidence they have in you. This will result in various gameplay tactics. If their morale is low, then they will most likely try and find cover instead of diving into the heat of the battle alongside you. In this game, you will either tie your own noose to swing by or build your pedestal of success.
Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games then had the spotlight to talk a little more about Unreal Tournament 3. He stated that the game will be available this November on the PS3 and the PC. "Some of the kids didn't seem to get that," as he chuckles a little, confirming that the game is not exclusive to the PS3. He also admits that he loves the modding community and cannot wait to see what they come up with for this game. We are given video of Unreal Tournament 3 dubbed "The Tournament for the Next Generation."
After the video, the conference ended rather abruptly with the light flicking back on. Midway may not have the longest lineup this holiday season, but they definitely have some worthy titles coming. I'm really excited about every title they talked about today. Be sure to look for more information on these titles and more throughout the site.
