We recently spoke with Natural Motion Games about their upcoming Backbreaker title. Find out all the bone-crushing updates here.
CCC: How has the focus shifted from 2010's Backbreaker to this new sequel?
NM: Backbreaker Vengeance is pure, adrenaline-filled arcade action. It's got the same super-addictive gameplay that has driven more than five million Backbreaker downloads on iOS so far. But on console, we're able to take things further: most notably, we've got our full real-time Euphoria engine running, so the action is truly unique, and non-canned. Secondly, we've added a ton of new features and something very special – which we're not quite ready to announce yet.
CCC: What lessons did you learn from the original Backbreaker?
NM: We've learned that people love playing a game that's truly live. The old approach of canned action and sports just don't go together. This is why we were so proud of how Euphoria transformed Backbreaker into a truly live experience. To be totally honest – and maybe not surprisingly – we also learnt that writing an entire 11v11 football game from scratch is a lot of work. Luckily, we've done all the heavy lifting on this now and have an absolutely amazing codebase and team to build upon.
CCC: Were you surprised by fan response to the original?
NM: We are really proud that the original Backbreaker on console created such a strong following, pre- and post-launch. We tried very hard to listen and we're extremely happy with Greathouse, our post-release game update, which incorporated many fan suggestions and features. Backbreaker Vengeance is a "Thank You" to the hundreds of thousands of fans who bought the original console game; and it's an opportunity to massively extend this fanbase, as we've demonstrated with the millions of players of the iOS version.
CCC: What feature are you most excited to share with fans?
NM: We're not yet ready to announce specific features just yet, but there's one in particular I'm very excited about.
CCC: Can fans of the iOS version of the game expect this sequel to make its way there?
NM: The iOS versions will follow a slightly different release pattern to the console games, but it's fair to assume that we'll be using some of the new cool console features in upcoming iOS versions.
CCC: If someone has never played the original Backbreaker, what is it about the sequel that will draw them in?
NM: It's total action, very fast-paced, and instantly accessible. If our gameplay tests are anything to go by, people are going to have a lot of fun.
