With Brokeback Mountain tearing it up in terms of Oscar buzz, a parody in Console Wars was a veritable no-brainer. Once again we see the PS3 taking the brunt of the abuse from the Xbox 360, who is clearly the smarter of the two (at least for now).
For the life of me I couldn't think of a movie title for the script the Xbox 360 was working on, that was remotely interesting or humorous. To this day, a funnier title eludes me. I settled for "Disc Read Error Mountain" which doesn't even make sense, nor can I even twist some BS story into something esoteric to make myself appear smarter, as though I called it that for a reason. I called it that because I couldn't think of something better.
The pink cowboy hat: While I was creating this strip, the PS3 was originally wearing a regular brown cowboy hat. In the middle of designing it, my wife asked me to go across the street to see what kind of furniture my off-kilter neighbor was putting out on the curb with a "Free! Take it!" sign. I was extremely reluctant to go as we had lived there for about 9 months and I had successfully avoided eye contact with him and I wasn't feeling in a mood where I needed to invite more weirdos into my life (remember I work on the internet...). Once across the street, I could tell that this was the world's lousiest particle-board furniture and that I wouldn't be taking any of it. But my wife watches HGTV and TLC where people go garbage-picking and then turn crap into design works of art, and she was hoping that I was going to come with a Ming vase or something. As I turned to leave, the owner of the house came outside and I was forced into a very bizarre conversation involving everything from million dollar lawsuits, horrific accidents, scar tissue and internet porn. I finally got out of there and returned to my everyday normal world where I could continue work on my talking video game systems comic strip. After a few minutes, I heard a noise coming from across the street and I looked out my window and saw my strange neighbor wearing a girl's pink cowboy hat. He wasn't wearing it to be funny - as he kept it on throughout most of the day. I immediately took that as a sign, and placed a pink cowboy hat on the PS3.
