Hot Games of 2007 article

Adventure, the genre halfway between action and RPG! Take a look at some of the hottest adventure games that we'll see in 2007!

Name of the Game: The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
System/s: Nintendo DS
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
Release: 11/01/2007
Number of Players: 4
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Hotness Factor: 4

When Nintendo announced that Windwaker was going to use cel-shading, many fans became concerned. Upon playing the game, fans realized that their fears were unfounded. Windwaker included all of the great gameplay that one would expect from a Zelda game but with a unique visual style. When Nintendo decided to go with a more realistic graphical approach with Twilight Princess, fans of the cel-shaded Link from Windwaker felt somewhat left out. Fortunately, the Windwaker approach to Zelda will live on with the release of Phantom Hourglass later this year.

Not only will Phantom Hourglass use this unique visual approach, but it will also play differently than any other Zelda game in existence. Since this is a DS game, Nintendo has implemented the use of touch screen controls. Players will control Link by tapping their stylus on the touch screen to make him move, open doors/chests, and attack his foes. You can also expect many of the game's puzzle elements to require some ingenious stylus usage. Phantom Hourglass will also include a unique multiplayer experience with players alternately controlling Link. While controlling Link, your goal is to collect Triforce pieces while avoiding being caught by your enemies. Once your turn controlling Link is over, you will get to be the enemy and try to stop your opponent from successfully collecting their Triforce pieces.

Phantom Hourglass is a heavily anticipated title for the DS. I would have given this game a hotness factor of five, but I am still unsure of just how well the touch screen implementation will work. As with many Nintendo games, it has seen some delays which only serve to make waiting fans that much more excited for its release. Still, Zelda fans should have a great reason to rejoice when Phantom Hourglass is finally released this holiday season.

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations
System/s: Nintendo DS
Publisher: Capcom
Developer: Capcom
Release: September 2007
Number of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Hotness Factor: 4

Fans of courtroom battling should have no objections to this new Phoenix Wright game. All of the classic courtroom gameplay returns in the third game of the series. Players will get to survey crime scenes, collect evidence, and discover inconsistencies in testimonies to make sure the innocent are protected and the guilty are punished. The popular "pysche-lock" mechanic from Justice for All will also be included in the upcoming Trials and Tribulations.

Players who have followed Phoenix Wright through his first two adventures will find the completion of his story in this installment. Could this be the end of the series or Phoenix Wright himself? Only time and hours of fun will tell. Fans of the Phoenix Wright series will definitely want to pick up this game when it is released this fall.

Name of the Game: Silent Hill Origins
System/s: PSP
Publisher: Konami
Developer: Climax
Release: Q3 2007
Number of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Hotness Factor: 4

The Silent Hill series is back, and this time you can get freaked out on the go. Silent Hill Origins looks to give players a full-fledged Silent Hill experience on the PSP. It will also take place just prior to the original Silent Hill. You will play as Travis O'Grady, a trucker who unfortunately makes a late night stop in the creepiest town known to man. Shortly after stopping, O'Grady finds a burning house with a little girl inside. This girl is lying in what appears to be a demonic symbol on the floor while calmly burning alive. You quickly pull her to safety and then promptly pass out. This event begins your 10-12 hours of Silent Hill goodness that is said to be present in Origins.

While Origins should be good old Silent Hill fun, a few things have changed. Due to the lack of a second analog stick on the PSP, players will be able to re-center the game's camera by pressing the L trigger. More importantly, however, are the changes to combat. Weapons will now have an individual durability level. After using a weapon a certain number of times, it will break and leave you clamoring for another offensive tool. If one can't be found, you'll have to resort to using your fists to survive. This addition should make an already frightening game feel that much more hopeless and terrifying. At least you'll be able to play this one in public once it is released.

Name of the Game: Afrika
System/s: PS3
Publisher: SCEA
Developer: Rhino Studios
Release: TBA 2007
Number of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Hotness Factor: 2

At this point, this game is actually up to individual interpretation. Very little is known about this mysterious PS3 exclusive besides that it is full of exotic wildlife. Virtually any animal you can think of that lives in the plains of Africa is included. Rhinos wander the plains going about their daily business while nearby giraffes nibble on leaves from the top of a tall tree.

Nothing is known about the gameplay side of this title. The only detail that has currently been reported is that Afrika's gameplay will be completely non-violent. This is great news for all those animal lovers that also own a PS3. Perhaps this game will be more about the experience of watching these majestic animals in their natural habitat. As far as we know, it could just as easily be a game about crime fighting cheetahs laying the law down on the unruly animals of the African plains. While this is most likely not the case, at this point, the possibilities for Afrika are only limited by your imagination.

Name of the Game: Heavy Rain
System/s: PS3
Publisher: Atari
Developer: Quantic Dream
Release: TBA
Number of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Hotness Factor: 5

Quantic Dream surprised many people with its interesting hit Indigo Prophecy. It was a unique and visceral experience full of great character development and plot twists. Their new game, Heavy Rain, looks to bring gamers an equally unique gaming experience. Not much is known about this title aside from a trailer that was released at last year's E3.

The trailer was actually of a female character rendered in-engine auditioning for a part. The graphics were incredibly stunning, having the woman display a wide array of realistic looking emotions, even eventually sobbing. While on this emotional roller coaster, she pulls out a gun and places it to her head. She next turns the gun on the viewer and continues to speak angrily. Suddenly, she puts the gun down and smiles. The sheer range of emotions on display was amazing and beautiful to behold. If the game looks this good and has a great storyline like in Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain will be a title sure to make a big splash upon its release.
