Hot Games of 2007 article

Name of the Game: L.A. Noire
System/s: PS3
Publisher: Rockstar Games
Developer: Team Bondi
Release: TBA
Number of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Hotness Factor: 3

L.A. Noire will be the debut title from the Australian studio Team Bondi and is being published by Rockstar Games. While few details about this title have emerged, L.A. Noire looks like it will be a gripping crime thriller. It takes place in a "perfectly re-created" Los Angeles during the late 1940s. Crime is running rampant in the chaotic streets of the City of Angles and it's up to you to solve a series of unsolved murders.

L.A. Noire appears to be an open-ended detective game that pays tribute to the increasingly popular film noir approach to video games. The game seriously looks good and seems to have a solid formula in place to become a success. Unfortunately, we will need to have some more details about the game before getting officially excited. That being said, this is a game that you will definitely want to keep an eye on as more details are sure to be released in the coming months.

Name of the Game: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
System/s: PS3
Publisher: Naughty Dog
Developer: Naughty Dog
Release: Q4 2007
Number of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Hotness Factor: 4

Naughty Dog, well known for the Crash Bandicoot series, is going with a completely different approach with its new PS3 game. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune will be a far more realistic game as opposed to their previous cartoony titles. You play as Nathan Drake, a supposed long lost relative of the English captain Sir Francis Drake. Your objective is to unravel the mystery behind Sir Frances Drake's demise and hopefully find his rumored treasure.

Uncharted will be a visually impressive title for the powerful PS3. Players will actually be able to make out wrinkles in characters' faces as they react according to the situation. Drake himself is also reported to have over 1200 unique animations to make gameplay seem less sterile and more realistic. Uncharted will also make use of the Sixaxis in several ways including keeping balance by tilting the controller to the left and right while Drake is walking across logs. Uncharted should be an interesting and fun Indiana Jonesesque experience for PS3 owners later this year.

Name of the Game: Resident Evil 4
System/s: Wii
Publisher: Capcom
Developer: Capcom
Release: Summer 2007
Number of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Mature
Hotness Factor: 5

Since its launch in November, the Wii has been a veritable dumping ground for a seemingly endless supply of poorly ported last-generation video games. Virtually every one has consisted of "GameX now available on Wii with tacked on motion-sensing controls." Although this formula can get somewhat annoying, not all of these ports should immediately be dismissed. Resident Evil 4 (RE4) for the Wii looks like it will be the prime example of this fact.

This game seems like a no-brainer success story. Take one of the best games ever made, RE 4 for the GameCube, add the PS2 version's extra content, and add motion-sensing controls. Unlike some of the recent Wii ports, however, the motion sensing controls shouldn't just feel tacked on. The Wii-mote will be used to give players even more precise aiming than was possible on either of the previous versions.

While this may not be an entirely new game, it does look like it will be the definitive version of RE4. This game should be amazing considering that RE4 is widely accepted as on of the best games ever made. Combine the added content, motion-sensing controls, and the $30 price tag, and RE4 for the Wii looks like a must buy upon its release this summer.

Name of the Game: Grand Theft Auto IV
System/s: Xbox 360/PS3
Publisher: Rockstar Games
Developer: Rockstar Games
Release: 10/25/07
Number of Players: TBA
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Hotness Factor: 5

Grand Theft Auto (GTA) has returned and promises to be bigger than ever. Perhaps not in actual geographic size but in scope, GTA IV's area is said to be smaller than that found in GTA San Andreas. Although there will be less sheer land mass, GTA IV's Liberty City will be packed full of buildings and people, having none of the empty areas found in previous titles. Seemingly the biggest impact this will have on the game is in the exclusion of airplanes. Fortunately though, players will still be able to take flight in helicopters.

In GTA IV, you will play as Niko Belic. Niko decides to immigrate to Liberty City after prolonged correspondence with his cousin Roman. Roman talks big and sells Niko on the idea that he is rich and powerful. Upon arriving in Liberty City however, Niko quickly realizes that he has been lied to and must actually help Roman get out of some trouble.

GTA IV is a highly anticipated title and rightfully so. With its improved graphics and artificial intelligence, it has the makings of the best GTA to date. Hopefully, the game will live up to, or perhaps even eclipse, the hype that has been built up for this title. One thing is for sure: most PS3 and Xbox 360 owners will be eagerly awaiting this title's release this fall.

Name of the Game: Tomb Raider Anniversary
System/s: PS2/PC/PSP
Publisher: Eidos Interactive
Developer: Crystal Dynamics
Release: 06/05/07
Number of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Teen
Hotness Factor: 3

Its hard to believe it has been ten years since Lara Croft revolutionized the inclusion of women as main characters in video games. In the last ten years, video games have changed a lot, leaving Lara's first outing looking rather dated. Fans of Lara have no fear, Tomb Raider Anniversary is giving Lara's original title a much needed face lift. This remake should tighten those lagging controls and firm up those now archaic graphics that we all remember and once fell in love with.

Anniversary will use the same engine as was used in the recent Tomb Raider Legend. This is good news since Legend is accepted as the franchise's first good step in the right direction in quite some time. Fans of the original game will also not be left out of the fun. While Anniversary is basically just a remake of the original Tomb Raider game, the secret artifacts and relics that you will need to find to proceed will not be found in their original positions. With a complete graphical and control overhaul and the repositioning of key items, Anniversary should satisfy long-time fans of the series and newcomers alike.
