March 14, 2008 - After a crazy launch week, Cheat Code Central's writers finally sat back and relaxed, trying to decide which features of Super Smash Bros. Brawl they enjoyed the most and which ones left them hoping for more. Check out CCC's impressions and see if you agree with us!
1. What's your favorite feature from Super Smash Bros. Brawl?
My favorite feature has to be the online functionality. Although it is not quite as complete as I might have hoped, it is great playing different opponents online.
- Amanda L. Kondolojy
What is the one thing all of us have been looking for ever since the series began close to ten years ago? Online multiplayer of course, and its implementation adds a more competitive touch to coincide with the innovative battle system.
- Branden Barrett
Easy Game mechanics make multiplayer the best feature. Controls are easy to understand and moves are not too difficult.
- Devin Finley
I really enjoyed the sheer quantity and diversity of content, features, and collectibles. Like our review says, the game is more than just a fighter, it's a Nintendo museum.
- Jonathan Marx
It's got to be the level builder. I love Smash Bros., and to me nothing is cooler than being able to create my own stages and fight there with my friends in local multiplayer.
- Joseph Catalanotto
I like "The Subspace Emissary" adventure, which is more engaging for me than just fighting for the sake of it. Collecting stickers and trophies is very addictive as well!
- Maria Montoro
The brawl action never gets stale, but the inclusion of The Subspace Emissary solo/co-op campaign throws a little more meat on the fire for all to enjoy.
- Nathan Meunier
It's got to be online play. After graduating college, it's fair that most people go their separate ways. In my case, that is also true so having the ability to brawl against people online is a major plus.
- Tom Kelly
2. What's your least favorite feature?
Although online play is my favorite feature, it is also my least favorite feature. While it is exceedingly fun to play, it is way too shallow, and gets a little repetitive after you play it for awhile.
- Amanda L. Kondolojy
The addition of the Subspace Emissary makes for an explosion of nostalgia, but the same can't be said for the classic single player mode. To be honest, they should've let that mode retire with Melee.
- Branden Barrett
Though the movement and moves are easy to grasp, I sometimes find the controls a bit fidgety.
- Devin Finley
There's a big discrepancy between characters' abilities. For example, Squirtle is a badass while a fully suited Samus just feels kind of slow and weak.
- Jonathan Marx
Probably it's the online communication. To be frank, I feel it's underdeveloped and with such a great game as Brawl that's being played online by millions of people, I think there was real potential for a headset and some real smash talk among competitors.
- Joseph Catalanotto
I thought the online options were limited. Just like I think they're doing with Mario Kart, they should have more online modes, voice chat, weekly tournaments, special trophies you can only get online, etc.
- Maria Montoro
Are you kidding?
- Nathan Meunier
I like what Subspace Emissary tries to be, but it is pretty boring as a whole. The concept of adding a comprehensive single player to Smash Bros. on paper sounds good, but it just does not come off all that great.
