3DS Hits 5 Million U.S. Sales
Nintendo is one of the few game companies that gives straight-up sales numbers to the public these days, which is nice for industry followers like myself. Contradicting various media statements I've seen lately that the 3DS "isn't selling so well" in North America, Nintendo has pointed to this month's NPD numbers showing that the 3DS has now sold over five million units in the United States. That easily surpasses the original Nintendo DS's sales over the same time period from launch. Three 3DS titles have now sold over a million copies: Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time 3D. Nintendo is feeling bullish about the device's future, with a strong-looking holiday software lineup and the launch of the 3DS XL (which is priced to make a profit on each sale from the get-go) in August.
In other sales news, here are June's top ten best-selling games:
1. LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes
2. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier
3. Diablo III
4. Max Payne 3
5. NBA 2K12
6. Batman: Arkham City
7. Pokémon Conquest
8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
9. Battlefield 3
10. The Amazing Spider-Man
Overall software sales are down thirty percent from last year, but that's mostly because of fewer games being launched. Those games that do launch are actually making a bit more money than last year's games. It's interesting to see mostly "core" games on the list this month. Perhaps it's simply too hot to Just Dance?
