5. Guybrush Threepwood and Elaine Marley (Monkey Island Series)
As the only married couple on this list, Guybrush Threepwood and Elaine Marley hold a pretty special distinction. Both of these characters are fiercely independent, but it is the sacrifices they make for one another that makes their relationship truly memorable. In fact, Guybrush even makes the ultimate sacrifice for his wife in the series' final act. Fortunately, through the power of love (and some quick magic), Guybrush and Elaine manage to escape death's clutches and live to pirate another day. Elaine and Guybrush may have their comedic moments, but behind the smiles there is a couple that genuinely harbors undying affection and respect for each other.
4. Link and Zelda (The Legend of Zelda Series)
Link and Zelda are a Nintendo power couple, and like Mario and Peach, they always seem to find each other despite wildly changing situations, constantly shifting allegiances, and an unholy amount of dungeons separating the two for days (or years, depending on your chronological preference) at a time. Sometimes, Link and Zelda's love is shown as something akin to childhood puppy love. Sometimes, it is deep and meaningful. But no matter what the situation, it is always there, and is the driving force behind Link's devotion to the land of Hyrule. Because who needs to save a kingdom where there's no fair maiden at the end of the quest?
3. Chrono and Marle (Chrono Trigger)
Chrono is a hero. Marle is a secret princess who gets stuck in time and needs saving. Sound familiar? By all accounts Marle and Crono are a paint-by-numbers couple. However, when they finally get together at the end of Chrono Trigger, it is one of the most emotional moments in gaming history. After such a long and perilous journey, seeing Chrono and Marle finally get together is enough to make even the most cynical gamer shed a tear or two. And if you get the "balloon" ending, be prepared to take out an insurance policy on your hankie, as the simultaneous beauty and tragedy of that ending is enough to ruin your life for several hours post-game.
2. Ico and Yorda (Ico)
Ico and Yorda's tale is one of both bravery and loss. When Yorda is captured and her body used by an evil queen, it's easy to think the story ends with these two crazy kids breaking the spell and living happily ever after. However, things are rarely that simple in real life, and Ico makes sure you know that love isn't an easy thing to experience. However, it's an even harder thing to maintain, and if you really love someone, you are ready to make massive sacrifices for them. No matter how high the cost.
1. Tidus and Yuna (Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2)
Tidus and Yuna's relationship is one that makes gamers all over the world sigh. They start out as star-crossed lovers, and despite Tidus' sordid history (not to mention time-displacement issues) and Yuna's eventual destiny, these two form a bond that conquers an unspeakable evil. However, this bond comes at a very high cost, and the way these two eventually part ways is probably the most tragic moment in all of gaming history. Final Fantasy X showed us that love is great when you are in it, but can also bring extreme pain. As a great poet once said, "Love is a familiar. Love is a devil. There is no evil angel but Love." I think Yuna would agree.
