Unfortunately, the survival horror genre is lacking a bit these days. Most of our favorite survival horror games have really just become action games. Even Silent Hill barely scares us like it used to, instead choosing to give us expanded combat systems. So I've decided to even the score a bit. If the Survival Horror genre has started giving up its big winners to action, I've decided to take back some big winners of other genres and give them over to Survival Horror. Here are my pitches for the top ten games that would be far better as horror games. Happy Halloween everyone!
Your brother is missing and you must investigate an old mansion to find him. It's a shame that the mansion is haunted with restless spirits that want nothing more to add you to their ranks. You cannot fight the spirits; you can only trap them. Unfortunately, the spirits continue to come at you, and the clues to your brother's whereabouts are few and far between. That is, until you enter the attic and you see a mysterious shadow. Maybe it's not your brother who needs saving after all.
You receive an interesting letter with the purchase of your new gaming console. "Free house," it says, advertising beautiful vistas as far as the eye can see. Of course you jump on this opportunity, moving into your new pad. But then things start getting weird. People start disappearing. Certain people walk through walls for no discernible reason. Some days you find that you are the only person for miles. Not only that, but the people you do occasionally meet won't ever say a word. This strange Stepford Wives world that you've walked into threatens to make you another silent, zombie-like denizen who cares for nothing but acquiring nice hats and rearranging furniture.
The apocalypse has come. Entire portions of land are sinking into the sea. Other landmasses have begun rising into the air. With the laws of physics betraying us, our only real hope lies in a new scientific discovery. A new ultralight gas seems immune to the changing laws of physics around us, and so it is our last hope of transportation and survival. Unfortunately, the gas has fallen into the wrong hands. A group of bird-masked cultists have begun crafting bizarre balloons filled with the gas, and they've been kidnapping your friends and family. They seem to make some bizarre ritual out of feeding them to gigantic mutant fish that have arisen since the apocalypse. Can you fight back against the cult, or will you also find yourself in a watery grave?
Someone has locked you in a dark maze and you don't know how you got here. The only way to figure out where you are going and where you have been is by following a trail of dubious pills that have been laid on the floor. You take these pills almost compulsively, perhaps due to a prior addiction. Then, the restless spirits of the dead appear. They chase you through the maze, which loops upon itself without end. Your only defense is to run, or to eat a "special pill" that makes them run from you. Should you eat all the pills, you'll find yourself passing out, only to wake up in the same maze with the same pills, forced to do it all over again. Are you in some sort of nightmare? Perhaps you have been sent to hell because of your drug-induced hedonism? Either way, you know you need to escape.
You are locked in a tunnel. You aren't particularly sure how you got here, but you're pretty sure the tunnel's inhabitants do not like you. It is only seconds before bizarre wind-up robotic men begin attacking you, following by mutilated humans with springs instead of feet. The horrors only get worse, as you encounter cultists in robes, giant sasquatches, and ghosts in the shape of skeleton whales. The only way to defeat these monstrosities? Bubbles. Except sometimes the bubbles don't work. Sometimes they pop and even worse monsters come out. Sometimes you can't even blow bubbles. Yet, you can only go further down a path that seemingly never ends. Were you drugged? Are you experiencing some sort of horrible acid trip? Where are you and why do all of these things want to kill you? You must find out as you try to get back to your family.
