Weekly Rant - Platform Revolution

The ultimate gaming device has existed for decades. Why doesn't anyone recognize it? It's been dropped right into your lap.

There is absolutely no reason why a laptop can't be used for virtually all gaming applications. Get rid of the PS3s, the Xbox 360s, the handhelds, and the inevitable next-next gen consoles. A laptop is all we need to take care of all of our gaming needs.

Laptops wipe the floors with gaming consoles on every level. They are faster, have better graphics, and amazing storage capacity—and that's just a few of the advantages. They are portable, wireless, and upgradeable. You can go online and check your Facebook in between bouts. They can be hooked up to your high-def TV. So why tree-hug a Wii? Would you enter a Smart Car in a drag race?

"You're crazy," you might say. But that's beside the point. There's no reason to have five different gaming systems, except the fact that each manufacturer wants you to buy their system, and thus control game exclusivity. But we know third-party developers aren't loyal to anything but money. A typical blockbuster will be released for all platforms, because that's where the money is. And it's these developers we need to court.

It will take a bit of work and some sacrifice to get this done. But it needs to be done if you want to enjoy playing all future games on one platform. We have to start a revolution. With mass communication today it couldn't be easier. We simply tell the big guys we are not using their gaming systems anymore. Don't even so much as rent a game for the PS3 until they get the message. And they'll get the message. Quickly.

I know what you're thinking: "I've already spend hundreds of dollars on the Xbox 360 and all the games, I don't want this crazy idea of yours to render this stuff useless." Well guess what? It's time to upgrade. For years, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have been developing the line of new next-gen systems to replace these existing ones. And it will continue like this forever, unless you do something.

Laptop manufacturers will be tripping over themselves to offer gaming-specific features. Prices will drop dramatically. Third-party manufacturers will ensure every nunchuck, guitar, gun, joystick, steering wheel, and aftermarket controller has a USB plug attached to it.

Continue to play games on the systems you already own, just don't buy any new ones for a while. It may take a few months, but it will happen. And you can do it. Start your own revolution now; they're the "in" thing this year.
