Developer: Backbone Entertainment | Publisher: Capcom
Release Date: July 29, 2009
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was originally released 9 years ago for arcades and the Dreamcast, but if you missed it, don't worry! This legendary fighter is now part of the Xbox LIVE Summer of Arcade. This fighter may be almost a decade old, but there are plenty of new features included in the XBLA version to make it worth the download.
As far as the roster is concerned, all your favorite Marvel and Capcom characters are here. On the Marvel team, you'll find the likes of Wolverine, Cyclops, and Captain America. For Capcom's side, you can expect to see plenty of franchise staples like Chun-Li, Jill Valentine, and Mega Man. With more than fifty characters total, there are plenty of recognizable faces, and you can create your ultimate fan match.
The game's battle system is fairly simple, taking a four-button approach to the action. This makes it user-friendly for those who don't consider themselves to be hardcore fighting enthusiasts, but it gives those who do enough freedom to use the game's most over-the-top moves.
As far as new features are concerned, the XBLA version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 has plenty to offer. Leading the pack is the game's online mode, which was created specifically for the current generation. Players can engage in tournament-style online matches with support for up to six players per match. Players can also become spectators and watch other tournaments take place.
In addition to the new online features, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 also features several upgrades to the visuals. The game is presented in full HD 1080p widescreen, and features several anti-aliasing features that can smooth out the game's retro look if enabled.
As far as offline modes are concerned, there is plenty to do in Marvel vs. Capcom 2. The game boasts several different match types, including three-on-three tag team matches and quarter matches. If you are a fighting enthusiast, or just a fan of the Marvel and Capcom universes, then Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on the XBLA is a must-buy, and definitely a good deal for only 1200 Microsoft Points.
