October 1, 2009 - Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight is the conclusion of the Tiberium saga. This RTS contains new features not found in previous C&C games. It's scheduled for an early 2010 release and only for PC. Single-player, skirmishes and online multiplayer modes will ensure months of diverse gaming. This time around you'll be playing the game on EA's very own servers. Expect big things.
As with all C&C games, the objective is to destroy your opponent(s) and conquer their bases and territories. You do this by building your own bases, collecting resources, creating an army, developing new weapons and technology, and then aggressively pursuing the acquisition of new territory - pretty much in that order. The key to expanding your empire is securing finances to buy everything you need. You are always going to need a bigger and stronger army. Defensive and offensive capabilities will always have to be upgraded. You can acquire some of these things by taking over sections of your enemy's empire or you can do things the old-fashioned way, collecting and processing resources.
Things are a little different in C&C 4, especially when it comes to resources. Instead of building processing plants at the base, you will construct plants on site. These mini-plants will be capable of performing value-added processing to the mined resources right on the spot. It adds a strategic element to the gameplay for both sides, since these plants allow for rapid expansion. Of course, they are also more vulnerable to attack.
Other changes in the series includes a cap on the population, the addition of new RPG elements, and a more powerful interface that utilizes the bottom section of the screen in place of the sidebar. Also, this time around there will only be two playable factions: The Brotherhood of Nod and the Global Defense Initiative. From past C&C games, The Forgotten and The Scrin will be included but only as non-playable factions. The Forgotten is a neutral faction and you can choose to battle against them or form an alliance.
Classes will play a significant role in the gameplay. Each of the playable factions will feature three classes: Offense; Defense, and Support. Employing some RPG elements, these classes are upgradeable throughout the game. The developers claim that all sides are equally matched at the outset. Using tanks and other heavily armored vehicles is a job for the Offense class that takes its position on the frontlines. The Defense favors infantry-style combat. They work best holed up in bunkers waiting to use the turrets. One of their main attributes is they are the only class with access to super weapons. The Support class has special powers that allow them to help and heal the other classes. They also specialize in transport, operating vehicles throughout their territory on land and in the air. There is no navy in this version. Sorry about that sailor.
A different storyline and campaign is available for each of the two playable factions in the co-op mode. The difficulty and objectives will vary depending on your level of experience. While the missions are linear, the developers maintain the game will have a greater sense of freedom since many elements of the gameplay vary according to your style of play. Different missions will be presented for different classes. As long as you vary your play slightly, you're unlikely to ever have the same experience twice.
Featuring new, existing, and improved units, there are approximately 80 units at the ready. The Mammoth Walkers are now Mastodons. Stealth, Nod Scorpions, and Flame Tanks will be revamped. Engineers will be a shared class among all factions, and they will now have the ability to repair vehicles. Undoubtedly, one of the most anticipated of the new units is the Crawlers. It's essentially a mobile base capable of producing units, processing resources, and receiving upgrades such as cannons and machinegun turrets. It's meant to be used as a frontline weapon and will be automatically replaced if destroyed. Although to be fair it won't be replaced instantly, allowing the opposing team to take advantage of this setback.
There are no plans for a console release of Tiberian Twilight. But plans do call for an all-star cast that will be featured in the live-action cutscenes and in voiceovers. From what we've seen of the screenshots and trailers, Tiberian Twilight looks like it's poised to put up a good fight.
